Media Create Sales: Week 13, 2013 (Mar 25 - Mar 31)

It's kind of heartbreaking that Nintendo is unstoppable when it comes to actual software quality/game design (in most cases) and fucking sucking at almost everything else

As a Wii U owner, I know that there is software coming, but for fucks sake: I never had those droughts with my other Nintendo consoles; I always had something to play on SNES, N64, GC and Wii, but nothing on Wii U - as ironically as this sounds for many, for me as a Nintendo fan that thing doesn't feel like a Nintendo console anymore to me

They made some huge mistakes - now they have to deal with it and try to make the best of it

Also, Japan experts: how should we interpret the -79% of the One Piece game? Didn't the first one perform better in comparison? Seems like a huge drop to me

I'm satisfied with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and indie games atm. I had a worse time during the GC launch, since there was absolutely nothing interesting for me for about 6 months.

Those are absolutely bad numbers for Game and Wario and DQ10.

Yeah it is a port, but it is still Dragon Quest in Japan. Would have obviously done better had there been no Wii version, but no way SE would have gone that route.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
I kept debating whether this deserved its own thread or whatever, but Kojima's tweet from yesterday seems like a pretty good obituary for the WiiU and Nintendo's home console business:

HIDEO_KOJIMA said:
Game is a media that depends on technology and it advances but does not degenerates. Thus once you step out from ladder of technology, you never able to step on the ladder again. Even in a short period of time not paying attention, the era steps beyond. It'll endanger you if you get caught up with only the horizontal advancement.

People say this a lot - is there something I'm missing?

There is a saying at Nintendo Japan about Miyamoto when he is involved in a project of him "turning the kitchen table upside down." For example, when they were developing StarFox for the 3DS they completed the game and went to show it to Miyamoto. He said, "but where are the motion controls?" So they had to go back and add that into the game thus delaying it's release.

Miyamoto is the one who tries to force motion controls on everything. He says he got the idea from watching kids playing on old NES and SNES systems when their bodies would turn when they were trying to control the character. I would say that the tablet is probably Miyamoto's idea as well, though I could be wrong.

His main problem is that he is a perfectionist who ends up delaying every project he is involved in because it has to be his way. Look at the time it is taking him to develop Pikimin 3! I like Pikimin but I don't think it is going to be a system seller for the Wii U.

This thing is going around blogs for some time now...

I hope that Vita does good number this week, too. Nintendo should cut the price of the Wii U if they want to stay competitive. That, and some games.
What does the owat(t)a means?

As much as I love Nintendo, they made so many mistakes in the past year. It's absolutely absurd how badly they failed in many areas. The whole message of Wii U is a mess. As great as I know their games will be, they definitely chose the wrong gimmick this time around.

I like their quirkiness (Nintendo Direct skits and all), but there definitely needs to be some changes within the company.

No. People are getting fucking weird at the moment. Not liking it.

It isn't going to be good reading for Nintendo investors. Wii U will probably miss the already lowered target, 3DS is probably going to miss the already lowered target, losses will be larger than expected because some of the currency gain will have to be written off due to a volatile market, DS+Wii shipments are going to be pitifully small.

I don't think it will be a bloodbath, taking a look at 7974 they are already at very low price, lower than GCN era so they just don't have any more to lose in terms of share price. Something they may do is cancel the 2013/14 dividend to save money which could send the shares down a lot.

Nintendo need to come out swinging in three weeks time, they need to show that they have 20-30 Wii U/3DS projects currently in development with at least 10 on each platform for 2013/14. That would be something to calm investors. Right now all people can see is a Mario game and Zelda for Wii U, and Pokémon for 3DS, most figure it won't be enough to reverse the sales trend for either platforms.

That's why I said it's most probably not happening now and that it would need to be guided though. It's just that I like the guy a lot, how he thinks and how he's open to the West especially, but he'd need to learn so many things before starting having a more operative role in Nintendo :p

Being more serious, do we have any hints about who could be Nintendo's CEO for the post-Iwata, especially from the BoD?

I'd like Iwata to be with the company if/when he does step down from the CEO position (he should at least still hold Nintendo Directs!) but I'm not really sure if the company would really change all that much with his successor.

It seems Animal Crossing: New Leaf has found a new baseline (60.000) after two consecutive drops where it went from selling 76.000 units to 60.000.

The gap between these two games will start widening, especially with Golden Week being so close.

Now the question is if its sales will be affected by the release of Tomodachi Collection: Shin Seikatsu.

But I've played a bunch of MH3 on my Wii already.. and indie games don't cut it

I need something bigger in my life

I can already see developers scrambling to get in on the action. Incoming;

Gran Turismo Vita
Ape Escape Vita
FF12 HD

That's still a huge failure on their part. Even if their were some more games the lack of 3rd parties would still leave the line-up pretty damn empty.

Yep, no question.

I can make some guesses as to how and why, but given 3DS, it's still astonishing that Nintendo fucked up as badly with JP third parties as they have.

Man, so disastrous for wii u. it's probably done even worse overall than their initial worst-case scenario predictions. Iwata is gonna have a shitty month putting his FY presentation / resignation together.

The 3DS is absolutely fine in terms of its release schedule. It's got Animal Crossing + Pokemon (two guaranteed million sellers) in the West, and Monster Hunter + Pokemon in Japan, along with a host of other titles in both regions that make up a very solid release schedule.

The Wii U is a different story, and we'll see how that goes.

If the CEO of the company lets other people make bad decisions, the blame falls on the CEO too. As the head of a company, the buck stops with him.

I know, but its important to identify what the failure is.
If Nintendo can not increase the development speed of HD projects for 2014 then it does not matter whose in charge.

Aren't those Wii U DQX numbers only 2 days of sales?

Game was just released on Saturday in Japan.

Game and Wario bombs. No surprise.

I kept debating whether this deserved its own thread or whatever, but Kojima's tweet from yesterday seems like a pretty good obituary for the WiiU and Nintendo's home console business:

Maybe Nintendo is struggling with the gen transition. They have been stuck on Gamecube-level hardware for over 10 years now. They weren't really churning out games even before the start of this generation to begin with. But what really boggels my mind is that they gave up on the Wii back in 2010, so they had 2+ years to prepare and develope games for the WiiU. Now that I see the output, I wonder what they have been doing all that time.

It does matter that the person in charge allowed things to progress to this stage though.

Nintendo cannot support 2 platforms, clearly.

Preparing for/releasing/fixing the 3DS. Plus they grew a lot since 2009, with about 500 additional employees and increased second-party relationships.

Now that the Vita's crow eating has ended (some guys diet these days consist of nothing, but crow), I can't see how Vita will sustain these numbers.

What will be the baseline of Vita? 20~25k is my guess, on weeks without releases.

Come on. It could see an incredible decline from the Wii versions and still do a lot more than Game & Wario.

Fitness genre is dead, I'm suprised it lasted the 4ish years that it did. I mean essentially people were paying 60$+++ for a workout dvd in a new skin (ok I'm being a little reductive here).

Even for the millions who already have a balance board are they really going to drop $300+ for a game + WiiU to play it on ?

I know sales and profit are the bottom line, but I wish we knew more about the restructuring that Nintendo underwent. Is it finished? What period did it take place, and how much did it affect development? Can Iwata blame the slow release schedule on it at all?

Anyone thinking Wonderful 101 will sell well should reassess. Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U won't move the meter much either.

Question of genuine interest: Why are people celebrating Vita's numbers if they went down even with two launches? I mean, it's good to see it around the 30k mark, but isn't this worrying?

Wii U did exactly as I was expecting. Never thought DQX would really help selling hardware. Though I was kinda hoping G&W would do a little bit better. Oh well...

Nice to see Luigi holding the 1st spot. And Animal Crossing is unstoppable. Can we already say the 5 million is guaranteed at this point?

The trend for the past couple of weeks has been stronger Yen. Japanese companies should be very wary about showing FY currency gains in march on their balance sheet based on 95 to the dollar and 125 to the Euro. They need to stick in a nice conservative 85-87 and 107-110.

This affects Sony also, but much less since they did not declare their 130bn worth of currency gains in the first place.
