Square Enix totally fucked up too there's no 3DS support from them at all so far. Even though the PSP is 'winning' that number is still quite low.

They are pushing Rocket Slime 3 in a rather large way, A huge problem I see with 3ds 3rd party games right now is that a majority of them seem to be targeted at the elementary/middle school group, whereas that group really hasn't been able to afford a 3ds yet.

Fantastic start for Meruru. I'm surprised at the huge jump Meruru's first week sales in comparison to Totori

Atelier Rorona: Alchemist of Arland (Gust) - 43,243
Atelier Totori: Alchemist of Arland 2 (Gust) - 53.871
Atelier Meruru: The Alchemist of Arland 3 (Gust) - 82,585
The PS3 has sold almost 7 million in Japan, and it's starting to bear fruits. The good thing is that third parties have taken notes.

I think DQX will outsell all of those games on that chart, yet it's nowhere to be seen, therefore I don't know how seriously I can take that chart. Is there any precedence for using it?

Zelda is down a lot because they had not restocked until sometime this week.
PSP beat 3DS is expected. PSP is getting lots of games whereas 3DS is starting slow.
Earth Seeker must have been a stealth launch there D:

It is the preorder ranking of games at one chain of stores in Japan. It cannot be used to come to reliable conclusions about actual sales except in the very generalest sense. i.e. If it's got hundreds of Comgnet preorders, then it shouldn't sell under 10K or something like that. It's completely accurate for what it is (preorder rankings for one chain of stores) but breaks down when trying to apply it to MC/Famitsu sales numbers.

And, of course, as preorders gear more toward the hardcore, these lists gear more towards the hardcore and can leave out casual/mainstream titles that can sell really well, like a Dragon Quest X, if it's even available for preorder at Comgnet, yet.

Captain MacKenzie Calhoun from the Star Trek: New Frontier series. Goes by Mac, mostly.

Though, you were probably referring to the Punch-Out reference. :D

Good numbers for Gust and Meruru but still not the highest PS3 debut for a Gust game is it? I seem to remember AT:3 being right up at 100k for the opening week although I could be mistaken.

Shame there's such a lag between Japan getting the Atelier series and when we in the States get them. I enjoyed Rorona and will be looking forward to Totori whenever it finally hits.

Who's the team behind that Bleach game? I see SCE as the publisher and I know NIS is bringing it to the US later in the year and I wonder what expectations were for that one. Sub 25k seems pretty bad.

DQX should have no problems gonna topping COMGNET with huge numbers. Excluding Versus XIII, which has been there for god knows how many years, games appear on COMGNET closer to the release; we don't even have a logo for DQX yet (do we?).

And congrats, Schuelma! It was almost 2 years ago the last time someone went off-topic like that. Time flies.

Also...poor 360, just about when we can say it had a hit last week with the Steins;Gate sequel, it gets steamrolled by PSP with a 6000/8200Y port of the first game that just last week was released at budget price for 360 (and in a bundle with the sequel). Amagami and Steins;Gate ports have certainly done great on PSP lately...

Really, 360 development has to be really cheap for these devs to keep on supporting it exclusively. Besides Steins Gate, the 360 has been on decline with regards to the niche stuff.

Makes me wonder how much longer will the devs can put up with this before they'll have to join the dark side. lol

Based on announced games so far, PSVita has no huge hardware sellers in Japan. The most popular title would be Hot Shot Golf.

A football game that releases every year for almost every platform anyway isn't the best indicator of 'developers flocking to the PS3'.

honestly, PSVita's Japanese sales success is academic at this point based on features and price point, dual retail/digital sales strategy and following the current trend of leadership set by PSP.

If you don't think PSVita is going to bring back the Japanese market, then you are essentially saying you expect it to die because Wii U sure isn't going to do it, and PS4 will be a long time coming and probably priced higher than Japanese mass market adoption for several years after launch.

No it isn't.

Your basing it's success on irreverent things, software moves hardware. Vita has had no software announced that will move any hardware, passed the early adopters, in Japan. IF at TGS we see some viable software then you can come and spout this, but not till then.

I've copy and pasted Chris's work into the OP, so that omissions (such as the fabled hardware charts), and some slight errors have now been corrected.

These past 3 weeks have really been an eye opener as to how much effort Chris puts into these threads. It's a lot, and I don't even do half of the stuff he does.

In the future if I'm given the opportunity to make another one of these threads, I'll try harder to get as much of it as I can. I do understand the disappointment when you come off of Chris's elaborate posts, onto a more bare bones replacement.

Well, to be honest the launch software isn't exactly repugnant to Japanese audiences. There's Ridge Racer (which hasn't been confirmed for launch), Hot Shots Golf, and Dynasty Warriors. All three of those games were also launch titles for the PSP, and sold pretty well. That's just software we know of, as like you mention, there's TGS and I imagine a bunch of stuff will be announced during the lead up, and the event itself.

It seemed to me that he used the game as an example of "third-parties flocking back to Sony's console", and, well, PES never left.

It does have software that will sell at launch, but it doesn't have software that will drive sales past early adopters. Most of the software bought at launch will be early adopters wanting a software to have at launch.

That's why it is best to wait for TGS.

Vita's 3rd party launch window software is basically what 3DS already had too, minus Layton. Essentially the whole argument on Vita's Japanese success hinges on PSP being popular at the moment, as if we've learned nothing from SFC/N64, PS2/PS3 and DS/3DS.

I dunno, the Nintendo crowd didn't seem to think so. The amount of "PSP will be dead in Japan once the 3DS hits" months leading to the launch shows that neither side really learns if they're talking about their console manufacturer of choice....

A lot of people more on the sales-age side than the console warriors side started changing their tune after the official lineup was revealled. I think most assumed a lot of the games anounced would've been coming out sooner instead of slamming the holiday season with tons of titles like they are doing now. Granted the 3DS still underperformed to what a lot of Sales-agers were expecting.

As for Vita, I think it will be fine for the holiday season but I don't know how it will do after that as it's already been said I don't think there is a very compelling software lineup that will ignite the charts on fire so far.

Right, expectations were sky high and look what happened. The Japanese by large didn't want a $250 handheld with Ridge Racer, Street Fighter, PES and Musou, despite how insanely popular it's predecessor was.

Now, about Vita...

This is probably the best place for this type of news, as its the thread I've posted in for 4+ years- I became a father Monday night- a beautiful baby girl.

Apologies if its a bit OT, but to bring it somewhat into the gaming realm, her name is Mackenzie, and everyone is already calling her Little Mac.

Wow dude, Congrats!

I just love the success Gust is having with the Arland series. While some larger developers whined about HD towns or retreated to handhelds they did exactly the right thing: take an existing, free, capable engine and make a game with mid-tier assets and good image quality using it. They focused on their strengths (the alchemy system, 2d art, music and uncharacteristically -- for JPRGs -- nonlinear gameplay) and continued to improve on their foundation and the sales show that their effort paid off.

Rorona is kind of a clunker but the large leaps in polish I see in videos for Totori and especially Meruru is pretty great for a small studio like that. It's really impressive.

I'm a shameless nut for the gather/craft/time management affair, so I'm really glad they're seeing some good success.

Really, 360 development has to be really cheap for these devs to keep on supporting it exclusively. Besides Steins Gate, the 360 has been on decline with regards to the niche stuff.

Makes me wonder how much longer will the devs can put up with this before they'll have to join the dark side. lol
If you're greenlighting an Xbox exclusive for the Japanese market at this stage, you're basically an idiot. Hold a massive grudge or something. Rational business this is not.
