Hyrule Warriors also does relatively well by Zelda standards this gen.

Famitsu

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS) 225,418
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) 182,998

Hyrule Warriors (WiiU) 78,773
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (WiiU) 31,154

I'm assuming you don't mean the temporal period since the beginning of the generation, but rather within "current gen" platforms. As I would assume, but am too lazy to look up, that there have been better PS3 Musou debuts since 2011.
Well given that "generation" tends to refer to hardware cycles rather specific dates, and I didn't list any PS3 (or 360/PSP) games, I sort of figured that was self evident. I also wouldn't call Persona 4 or Mother 3 last gen games though I guess you might?

I think 200k for HW in Japn is possible (maybe more). 300k in Amerika and 500k in Europe, of which 200k will be sold in France alone.

1 million worldwide is definitely possible.
a Zelda game selling more in Europe than the US is absurd, let alone all the other figures (France 200k wtf?)

Is that expected? When's the last time a musou game LTD tripled its FW. Although I suppose it's also a Zelda game; although same question can be asked of that too probably.
Why would it need to triple? Just doubling would put it at 150k which is right in the middle of that 100k-200k. And surely they will ship more than they sell through.

78k honestly seems kind of low for a title of this note in Japan at least in my opinion. I was looking at 100k at least.

Are you forgetting WWHD was bundled alongside the price drop (iirc)
no not forgetting but Nintendo's Website even counts Nintendo Land among WiiU million sellers so I am looking at the list if Nintendo is counting pack ins and remakes I think Hyrule Warriors have a better chance at reaching that 1 million goal

I'll give it to the end of December to reach this milestone

but who knows you could be right and the game fails in the west

it will be interesting to watch

The problem with your list is it included games like, for example, the latest Gundam Musou. That launched for the Vita and PS3 same day if I recall correctly. Naturally more people are going to buy it on the PS3. Including only the Vita numbers and saying, "Look at HW selling more than all these entries!" is rather misleading.

Is this a joke? Why the hell would it sell 500k in Europe lol.

Top 30

3DS - 18
PSV - 6
Dat market.

I think Nintendo is really dropping the ball with the 3DS though. It just feels stagnant, and even though it's king, it's doing worse than DS.

Wheres the 3DS+?

-Make the tubes go faster to eliminate load times
-Triple battery life
-Make the default machine slightly bigger (bigger screens, but not XL big)
-Extend range of streetpass
-Increase on board storage
-Make available in pastel pink

Launch that in late September and kill everyone else once and for all.

I don't think it will happen.I can't see Musou game selling 80% of it total sales in the west.
well if you look at the replies in this thread a few people doubt Hyrule Warriors can reach that goal

I think the game is interesting enough, I watched the 8 hour GameTrailer stream it looks very interesting so we will see if it bombs or not soon enough

I was referring more to the upper bound. I was under the impression Japanese retailers try not to end up with excessive shipments above sell-through/publishers find it more difficult to push those shipments in Japan.

No, but I wouldn't have tried to draw a comparison of Persona game sales and arbitrarily omit Persona 4 sales because it happened to release after new consoles had launched. Why include pre-2012 titles? The home console cycle began with the Wii U. The delineation you drew is relatively pointless.

Do we omit Call of Duty PS3 and 360 sales from comparison now? Well hooray, the Wii U COD was the best selling COD of the current generation in 2012.

France has a population of about 66 million.

The US has a population of 314 million.

Predicting 200K in France is like predicting a million in the US.
well to be fair France probably would have a higher ratio buying in on a musou game....

.....if it wasn't also a Zelda game

I'm French, Musou games are totally niche products here. Zelda name will help but don't expect anything huge

I certainly wouldn't bet on HW being a million seller worldwide, looks really unlikely at this time

Err... nearly all of those titles you're comparing with are multi platform or late ports, plus they're the worst selling versions. Compared to the other collaboration Musou titles in the past, Zelda Musou sold the least, and by a wide margin too.

First week sales:
Zelda Musou (WiiU) 78,773

Gundam Musou (PS3) 170,725
Gundam Musou 2 (PS3) 176,448
Gundam Musou 3 (PS3) 185,908

Hokuto Musou (PS3) 385,295
Shin Hokuto Musou (PS3) 116,431

One Piece Kaizoku Musou (PS3) 655,774
One Piece Kaizoku Musou 2 (PS3) 269,035 (Famitsu)
Not all are the worst selling versions. Only Orochi PS4, SW4 Vita and One Piece 2 Vita I think. None are the best selling versions though, those are all on PS3.

And comparative analysis historically is interesting but also promlematic without context. Franchise strength being a big variable. Back in 2007 when Gundam Musou launched mainline Musou games could sell upwards of 700-800k. These days they're lucky to move even half that.

Are we really comparing sales of a game series on a nearly 2 year old platform to one that has been available for over seven?

When Gundam Musou came out the PS3 had been available for over 7 years?
Hell, when Gundam Musou 2 came out the PS3 was only 2 years old.

True that Zelda holds very little power these days in Japan, but I'm thinking the brand will be able to push it to at least 100k.

Now this is a comparison.

Best title would be the first GM title to compare to since PS3 install base was much bigger in the later ones.

PS3 install base (Gundam Musou) : 747k
Gundam Musou (PS3) 170,725

WiiU install base (HW) : 1890k
Zelda Musou (WiiU) 78,773
Someone doesn't know how big Musou was back then and what were the expectations for Gundam Musou in Japan.

Wat?

There are only like 1.7M Wii Us shipped in "Others," last French number we had was in the realm of 350K. Both may be higher now but even then the kinds of attach rates you're talking about... :/
We're talking about 1 million lifetime sales for HW.

That's not really true. I think you're completely misremembering the context. From 2006 to 2014, the only Musou which sold "upwards of 700-800k" was One Piece Musou which sold over 800k in 2012. The only one. Before that you have to go all the way back to the PS2 in 2005 to find a Musou which sold over 900k. The actual average sales of mainline Musou when Gundam Musou launched was more like 400k.

The market was also much more console focussed. You will never see a Musou game do those numbers ever again at launch.
Is it really the case? Because back then (2007) I remember how DS was popular and how PS3 was treated like crap from Japanese market...

So, waht do you want to say? PS3 and Musou situation then is comparable to today?

Dynasty Warriors was a million seller on PS2, so it´s not really that surprising that some of its momentum was carried over to PS3 since this was their main focus going forward and DW fans obviously chose their system accordingly. I also agree that DW likely wont reach sales like OnePiece Musou on a single system anymore it seems to have declined even further in popularity.

Since we're talking about how "big" the Musou franchise was "back in the day" compared to now... how about these numbers?

I'm using Famitsu numbers from Garaph for this comparison because it's easier to pull the data:

2005 - Dynasty Warriors 5 (PS2) - 560,733 FW / 917,985 LTD
2006 - Samurai Warriors 2 (PS2) - 301,044 FW / 562,320 LTD
2007 - Dynasty Warriors Gundam (PS3) - 171,032 FW / 312,674 LTD

vs

2012 - One Piece Pirate Warriors (PS3) - 627,214 FW / 825,860 LTD
2013 - One Piece Pirate Warriors 2 (PS3) - 269,035 FW / 406,324 LTD
2014 - Hyrule Warriors (WiiU) - 78,773 FW / ????? LTD
