Anyone want to explain to me that boost in Switch sales?

Based on my own personal observations and checking Nintendo’s website, the new switch model was made available starting that week here in Japan. While shopping in Tokyo yesterday I noticed one store specifically was saleing the new model at the entrance of the store (as well as the new monster hunter as well) for those that just wanted it immediately without going into the store. So that’s probably the reason for the boost, the new model finally being available.

If I understand correctly, the percentages after titles are how much of the shipment was sold. And AC sold 80-100%.
If thats true, it would be kinda hard selling over 60k of units that don't exist.

True but you don't see many Police games on consoles these days and would assume the Japanese would love a Cop Drama on the Switch!

Seems the UK loved it enough to get to Number 1 since we do so many Police/Detective Dramas.

Japan don't seem to like Astral Chain all that much?

I wonder why it didn't do at least 100k?
It's because Platinum's typical character action games aren't popular anymore in Japan, and Japan's voucher program is extremely enticing for expensive games like this and Fire Emblem (like you get 2 games for the price of Astral Chain + a little more). Thus it's possible some sales were shifted to digital (Nier Automata and Metal Gear Rising were exceptions and sold a lot more).

WIU Bayonetta 2 33.114 48.462 Nintendo 20/09/2014
SWI Bayonetta 2 [All Versions] 9.471 38.266 Nintendo 17/05/2018

As an example of another publisher's action game, DMCV didn't even sell 200K.

Yeh you're correct ranma! The new Switch model was released on 8/30 and was heavily advertised. The battery life is a huge draw.

I still look at all Switch sales with a mental asterisk seeing as they consolidated the 3DS base and their traditional console base into one. And when you take into account how portable-centric Japan is, this shit didn't take a fortune teller to predict. Still good on them, it's a great little machine.

I still look at all Switch sales with a mental asterisk seeing as they consolidated the 3DS base and their traditional console base into one. And when you take into account how portable-centric Japan is, this shit didn't take a fortune teller to predict. Still good on them, it's a great little machine.

Yeah. I'm curious to see what the Lite version is gonna do for Switch. It's selling well right now, but the DS used to be a lot more popular.

The Switch is dominating, but the sales are still way down in terms of units compared to ten years or so ago. Nintendo's mission isn't over imo.

I have a feeling the lite will be a massive success in Japan simply for one huge reason, kids. A cheaper more portable system that pretty much everyone child here in Japan wants will be a huge seller for sure. As someone who teaches kids in Japan, I always hear the same thing from pretty much all of them, they want a switch if they don’t have one. And many that do want their own unit. Up until now the switch has been a family based system. Now it will be a system that will be easier for kids to get their own unit. That market is going to be huge for Nintendo especially this coming fall and winter season to be sure. Right now Nintendo has a great one two punch in my opinion. A better battery life switch for older users and those that want to play on the tv, and the lite for mainly the younger audience. It’s going to be interesting to watch the numbers come in over the next few weeks

Minecraft Switch keeps on trucking!

Gonna be very interesting to see the split between Switch Lite and OG later in September.

62 Devil May Cry V 122.838 183.627 Capcom 08/03/2019

Yeh you're correct ranma! The new Switch model was released on 8/30 and was heavily advertised. The battery life is a huge draw.

It is a damn shame though. You would think Digital would make up for it but they are not as enticed by digital. :(

Very interesting. I hope that really happens.

In ~2007 the DS was doing crazy numbers. At the same time the PSP was doing pretty good numbers, almost as well as the Switch is doing now. And then there was the Wii, and the PS3. All doing relatively well at the same time. The market was HUGE back then. What we have now cannot be compared to that. Sadly.

But the game prices..........

That might be why mobile swept most people away, besides being..well, trash.

But just dropping the price of games steeply is not the right solution I think. On one hand you'd get an increase in sales, but the games would suffer eventually. I'd appreciate a bigger market, but I'd like the value to remain. And that can't be realized as consistently when you drop the level to utter crap.

I don’t think that’s going to be much of a problem. Game prices in Japan have been going up for a long time. 3ds/day prices weren’t as high as other games but they weren’t cheap either. I could see Nintendo finally starting a value priced game selection this fall (although the way some of these older games are still saleing and the fact used game prices are so high for switch games could push this back a bit.) Plus the switch has some free games that kids want to play too. Fortnite for example is just as big here as it is around the world. Also it’s not like kids have a million games and all. They are happy with a few vs say the otaku crowd. Also parents will be very happy to give them a switch rather than handing over their smartphone.

However one issue that will be a problem money wise is about to happen, the rise in sales tax to 10% in October. I’m very interested to see how that will effect things on all levels, not just switch but all games and other items. It’s very unpopular and spending is expected to go down once that happens. There’s been plenty of “get your needed items now before prices and taxes go up in October” sales for just about everything here. It could hurt Nintendo, and Sony too for that matter.

But we also have the perfect situation for Nintendo coming up. A new cheaper more kid friendly switch in a market where every kid wants their own, and just a few weeks later the newest Pokémon game releases.
