what tombstone? Only one these franchises is actually dead. Disgaea manmaged to make it up in overseas sales, NIS specifically saying thats the reason they stick with PS4. FFXV made more bank and sales than FF13, despite many people thinking the franchise was dead (I wonder where we have heard that before). Yakuza seems to have gotten a resurgence overseas with 0 and RE7 is on track to meet expectations.
I think you know what he meant and sales numbers are there to back it up.

Final Fantasy
2M -> 1.2M

Disgaea
170k -> 50k

Yakuza
600k -> 400k

Resident Evil
900k -> 400k

I rounded up the number and was rather generous with LTD predictions for PS4 entries.

That ain't a tombstone for those franchises. Probably more akin to a hitch in the road.

If you include almost everything from PSV to PS4 there you'll see a tombstone.

With the drop of sales for these 3 it turns Dark Souls III was the first big PS4 exclusive.

People made fun of FF15's drop in Japan...this makes that one look absolutely quaint compared to RE6. But i think Capcom in part managed expectations in general, they only shipped like 2.5 million i think? As opposed to 6 million for RE6

Good news for PS4 though

Next Tales of is probably PS4 only too. I suspect it will be built in UE4 like everything else Namco is doing and they will be creating lots of new assets for it instead of the same stuff they've recycled to hell and back over the last 7-8 years.... only for it to bomb. The brand has been through some rough times recently, downward trajectory since XIllia.

Maybe I missed the statement from Nintendo where they said or implied that same architecture = same catalog. Could anyone link it to me please?

I'm expecting a PS4/Vita ecosystem from Switch and the next handheld. Easy multi platform titles and easy ports between them. But a handheld launching with the Switch catalog from the beginning... I don't see it (unless is a stripped Switch device as some of you are expecting). Nintendo spent too much resources this generation making ports between Wii/Wii U and 3DS (even if almost none was done in house) because of the different architectures but going from this to "everything everywhere" is something that doesn't make much sense when you have a device that can act as a home console and a handheld. And I'm pretty sure that there'll be a new handheld device so I'm in the "new handheld with different software from switch" camp for now.

Maybe in E3 we'll get more news regarding this, who knows (I don't).

I can't wait until this reveal to see this whole thing get resolved lol. I'd be gobsmacked at PS4 exclusive.
Does anyone really think God Eater 3 will be anything but Pee Ass Fore?
Western PC sales are a big factor too! The games have sold over 100k.*

*combined, mostly at a massive discount

Realistically, it'll be PS4 in Japan and Asia, PS4/Steam in the West. Namco are too short sighted to do a Switch version.
A Vita version is more important than a Switch one. Especially if they don't want to divide the userbase.

Double post but making Switch a hybrid is literally pointless if they still have a distinct handheld line. They could have just made a console if they were just going for a PS4/Vita strategy.

They could easily do that but it would be monumentally stupid.

People are reading too much into PR comments.

There's a reason Nintendo chose the Nvidia mobile architecture and that's because how flexibile it is. The Switch performance and market conditions will dictate what type of future form factor Nintendo will chose under that architecture. There will be an overlap between the Switch and new form factor in terms of library. Simple as that.

3DS handheld has a solid 2017 catalogue of releases relative speaking for a device of it's age, yet non of the 1st party releases are high caliber ones, for example: next iteration of Animal Crossing, MArio Kart, MArio Platformer, Zelda, etc. So there's not much internal resources been occupied by 3DS. Their PR statements in regards to the 3DS make complete sense.

What next handheld, Switch is a Nintendo Tablet - you cannot get anymore handheld than that. It's simple right now they have one device you can buy at sub $100 with a game another device for $300 without a game. When the Switch has been out for an year the price and value proposition will change and so will the library situation.

Currently when you buy a 3DS/2DS you have the entire multiyear catalog of 3DS/DS games that's something Switch will not provide to you. So it makes sense to keep that user base invested and grow it at this much lower price-point over the next year. Once you have all the major franchises on the Switch and have outsold the Wii U lifetime sales you can think about discontinuing the 3DS by releasing an even cheaper Switch without the dock or with better battery-life or whatever.

In the end the 3DS/2DS will continue to sell simply because there is a need for a cheaper dedicated handheld gaming device and Nintendo is the only company providing the device in question. Once the Switch/3DS are closer in price suddenly that niche begins to disappear.
I see nothing wrong with the strategy and making handheld exclusive games for a hybrid device seems like a waste of resources.

Because I'm expecting a different handheld device than a stripped down Switch. What's the benefit for Nintendo in selling the Switch without the dock (or a handheld device with the same architecture) for less money and playing only the same games as the switch? How many of this devices do you think Nintendo would sell? Less than the Wii U LTD for sure. The only thing that could make sense in this situation is if the handheld device could play the same software as the Switch but with a different twist, as the 3D/HD situation with 3DS and Wii U (maybe with patches for existing software... But the games being cartridges makes it more difficult).
What is the benefit of the 2DS compared to the 3DS?
I don't understand why it doesn't make sense to try to get a cheaper price point so multiple Switches are bought for one household for example.

PS4/Vita ecosystem is tested and failed.
Because Sony didn't support such ecosystem with first party games (and other things but it's not something that is always going to fail).

Why do you expect that?
I don't see incentive when Switch is already using mobile tech.
Why not reuse the same architecture?

Nintendo could discard the Switch modular design while still reusing the Switch architecture (the custom Tegra X1 etc.).
In that case it's not a PS4/Vita scenario where the two had different architecture.

Why change architecture when you have already the tool chain ready, your teams have experience on it and there is a software flow in the pipeline derived from Switch ecosystem?
What Nintendo will do depend on how Switch perform in the market but it doensn't make sense to reinvent the wheel when you have already a mobile solution ready.

Contrary to what you're thinking they already changed a lot of the assets over the years and entries, nothing will change on that front, if you're seeing too many samey environment in the same game that's a budget issue and nothing else
To keep the scope of a Tales of they either have to deal with fewer places and locations and do a lot of backtracking, or make a lot of locations that look the same, and often a bit of both, granted them making a very quick cheap sequel and a quick lower cost prequel don't help either.

Tales will hit the Switch at some point also.

The brand has been through some rough times recently, downward trajectory since XIllia.
If you look at the past 10 years Xillia was more an odd duck than anything else.

300-450k is where Tales of is standing now, it's not on a upward trajectory but it's still in a better place and more stable than the IP we quoted above that is.

Even if we assume Nintendo decides to launch a completely different handheld after 1-2years I seriously doubt there are the resources to support both systems at once or what different the new console will offer comparing to Switch.

If next Tales is a PS4 exclusive I'm not sure sales will remain at the 350-400k range.

App Annie has finally started tracking Fire Emblem Heroes in the Top Grossing charts (on iOS, not tracking for Android yet), and its first slot is at #8.

We'll see how it evolves over the next hours/days.

Dissidia is chilling down at 80 though I think that one is also spending most of its time erroring out right now.

As of now we're not sure that it will be PS4 exclusive, multi with Switch might make sense and we could see a 220-300/80-120k split in favour of PS4.
If it was to go PS4 only 300-350k would be a safe bet yes.

To be fair it's not like RE7 is selling less while having the same formula as RE5/RE6.

It's a major reboot that might not appeal to previous fans, especially those in Japan, so that has to be factored in I think. A drop is a drop but a direct comparison to the previous two entries can't be made in this case.

I just don't see how it is feasible for Nintendo to produce two separate libraries of HD software, never mind try to sell people on both of them.

Well I gave a wider range :p

I know Tales was listed for Switch but a mothership title would be easier out of whack with the software publishers have announced for Switch, even if multiplatform.

Like Bruno said earlier, Dengeki seems to be much closer to the higher sales # reported by Famitsu... which I hope is true at least.
01./00. [PS4] Resident Evil 7: biohazard (Capcom) {2017.01.26} - 224,640 / NEW

The XB1 version of RE7 charted (lol)!
37./00. [XB1] Resident Evil 7: biohazard (Capcom) {2017.01.26} - 1,729 / NEW

Congrats to Sumikko for hitting 150K (highest sales so far for the series if I'm not mistaken), Splatoon hitting 1.5M in retail and Mario Kart 7 hitting 2.6M in retail (last week)
38./30. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Mura o Tsukurundesu (Nippon Columbia) {2016.07.21} - 1,600 / 150,659
40./33. [WIU] Splatoon (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} - 1,567 / 1,500,918
36./28. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) {2011.12.01} - 1,856 / 2,602,803

Looks like Kirby should hit 500K retail next week, and Yakuza 350K in 2 weeks or so.
49./35. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) {2016.04.28} - 1,272 / 499,421
33./20. [PS4] Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (Sega) {2016.12.08} - 2,272 / 347,621

Dragon Quest VIII on 3DS must be the Dragon Quest with some of the best legs ever.
It started charting again 2 weeks ago for some reason and had nearly identical sales these past 3 weeks. Were there any recent pricecuts or anything?

Resident Evil 7 sells 226.000 units between PS4 & XB1, so 377.000 units shipped with 60% sellthrough.

Would've been cool to get an ratio of sales between the standard and grotesque versions, but guess won't be happening.

Dengeki also says that sales of Resident Evil 6 is at 928.000 units between PS3 & 360, that's likely combining all releases, PS4 version of the game is at 50k in Famitsu missing many months of digital data, so it's very likely that Resident Evil 6 is a million seller now. Now after Code: Veronica gets ported to PS4 that would be a million seller too, leaving 0, the remake and 7 as the only main RE titles to not be million sellers.

Retail software YoY

3DS: 1.073.467 (+37%)
PS4: 966.844 (+58%)
PSV: 374.180 (-29%)
WIU: 100.690 (-66%)
PS3: 30.427 (-88%)
XB1: 2.989 (-1%)

ALL: 2.548.597 (+3%)

Off to a good start I guess.

Is this worldwide or Japan?

RE7 is doing pretty well. Like that?

Go look at that top 20 and add all the sales for all the first person shooters on it.

I dare you.

LOL.
?

FPS Have done historically well in Japan starting with the previous generation. In fact we've seen an increase in BIG western releases in general.

RE7 decline is because RE7 is not an attractive purchase to fans of the series.

I'm not sure what kind of idiotic point you are trying to make though? Please enlighten me.

RE7 went from ~50% sell-through first day to 58,63% first week.

At least Media Create shows a smaller initial shipment (320k).

Excellent Eriador
A new Nintendo handheld would obviously just be a Switch in a smaller form factor that's more kid-friendly. I don't know why people are panicking over silly ideas like Nintendo trying to make two separate ecosystems for no reason.

I'm not saying that they'll change the architecture for the new handheld device just that it'll have exclusive software and not only the same software as the Switch because it doesn't make any sense to sell only a small more portable Switch device that plays just the same games as the Switch.

Anyway it's just wildly speculation for now so it'll be better to wait for Switch's launch and see where Nintendo goes from there :)

320.000 shipment for REVII... let's hope it sells the whole shipment at full price (but the 50% first day to 58% first week doesn't denote a good WoM for now).

Double post but making Switch a hybrid is literally pointless if they still have a distinct handheld line. They could have just made a console if they were just going for a PS4/Vita strategy.

They could easily do that but it would be monumentally stupid.
They most likely aren't making separate handheld line but some genius decided they don't want to kill 3DS sales with Switch.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic but why would you kill the platform that will have the best sellers this year in Japan? (Monster Hunter XX and Dragon Quest XI for example). In a world where Sony is still selling the Vita in 2017 the talk about killing the 3DS makes no sense at all.

Who's panicking, members of GAF? If I didn't know what happened at USA elections I'd think Trump didn't take more than 1% of votes.

There is a difference between still selling the device and providing it with new 1st party SW. Sony will keep selling the vita so long as people want to buy it but they know their future is the PS4 so that's where they develop all their SW.

The 3DS would still get those big games whether Nintendo kept supporting it with 1st party titles going forward.

I don't advocate killing the 3DS btw. I think a healthy winding down of its life span is fine. I just think that the switch is the future of their company and is a hugely important device for Nintendo. They need to throw a lot of weight behind the device if they want it to succeed.

As of now the switch has a barren launch and near launch line-up. Then you have Nintendo talking about continuing to support the 3DS going into the future (like they are for the rest of this year). That's where the concern comes from. 3rd parties have basically ignored the switch and it doesn't seem like Nintendo will be able to make up for that.

So whilst killing the 3DS isn't a good idea people are freaking out because of the switch situation. Their seeing a barren schedule of SE whilst Nintendo continues to make games for the 3DS and then there's the uncertainty about the switchs future.

We should make the yearly prediction league before next month.

I have thought about the following things to predict:

[PS4] PlayStation 4 Hardware
[NSW] Nintendo Switch Hardware
[3DS] Nintendo 3DS Hardware

[NSW + WIU] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
[NSW] Splatoon 2
[NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
[NSW] Super Mario Odyssey
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI
[3DS] Dragon Quest XI

Do you have any suggestions?

You need to keep an active userbase if you want games like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest sell in the millions. If Nintendo didn't release anything for 3DS this year and Dragon Quest XI launched in December... do you think it has a chance to sell 3 million? You can't abandon a platform for 10 months and then release the biggest game of the year hoping that everyone removes the dust of their 3DS and purchase the game.

Besides, there'll be more Nintendo titles for the Switch in 2017 that are yet to be announced.

We should make the yearly prediction league before next month.
