Media Create Sales: Week 48, 2013 (Nov 25 - Dec 01)

Did Sega/Nintendo have ridiculous expectations for Mario & Sonic (at least at Bic camera)? Or did they have low expectations and it still sold miserably? I remember that the last Winter Mario & Sonic only opened at 19k on the Wii. I can't expect its mediocre sequel to do decently on the Wii U's much smaller install base.

Also, good to hear about Dragon Quest X. Hopefully it at least sells decently. Any idea whether it seemed like there was more stock for the initial Wii U release or for this expansion? Thanks.

The photos I take are from Bic Camera, but the sellthrough is for the whole Japan.

No info of stock available.

Oh ok, good to know. How many more days are left for the sales week though? 3?

Monday. December 2nd
Tuesday. December 3rd
Wednesday, December 4th
Thursday, December 5th
Friday, December 6th - It's currently 3:00 PM Friday in Japan
Saturday, December 7th
Sunday, December 8th

Taiko didn't hold well at all while everything is starting to get the Nintendo Holiday Boost

Sad news for Gaist, will probably send Capcom even further into mobile

I guess Gaist Crusher should be a lesson to everyone: If you're going to create a game with Skylanders-type figurines, don't make them look like some late 90s Balkans Transformers ripoffs.

I guess they want it for PS4.

Yep. I don't know why they wouldn't hold it for PS4 instead of eight years old machine. I know the machine still capable, but being released near next-gen console must be greatly diminished the hype itself.
Same for Pupeteer. It should be that instead of Knack :/

Today i went again to the main Bic Camera shop in Ikebukuro and now both versions of Dragon Quest X are sold out.

http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/o763/hiska-kun/Mobile Uploads/image_zpse7a7675b.jpg

Sellthrough:

[PS3] Gran Turismo 6 - 30-40%
[WII] [WIU] Dragon Quest X - more than 80%
[3DS] Attack on Titan - 40-50%
[3DS] Bravely Default - 40%
[3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go 3 - 20%

[WIU] Mario & Sonic - 5%
[3DS] Gaist Crusher - bomba rabbids
Which Bravely Default is this again? For the sequel?
Wonder how attack on Titan did, just because of the popularity of the anime.
GT doesn't seem too hot, but maybe it had a huge shipment.

Very bad year for Japanese console games.

It will be a disaster if GT6 opened at less than 200k.

That would be hilarious because a Vita version would have sold more in Japan. GT is slowly (rapidly?) becoming a Western franchise so it's kinda moot but still fun to think about it.

I wonder how many units SE shipped of BD: For the Sequel. The original sold really well last year, but will people also be interested in the extended version? I'm really curious to see what it will end up doing.

About Dragon Quest X, is it a mere relaunch or did they add new things?

It's an expansion pack.

Nah, there's definitely going to be new shipments before the end of the year. Wouldn't make sense to launch a special pack right during the busiest period of the year, then have it on sale for barely 2 weeks.

Not sure if DQX sellthrough is good news, don't think the shipment was very high after how hard the original Wii U released bombed (that was to be expected for a full price release).

I think it's less about the look and more about outsourcing gone wrong. The game looked cheap even by 3DS standards, and the gameplay looked like a braindead button masher. This is not something you should be putting a lot of money behind.

Obviously it's good news they wouldn't bother shipping it wasn't a worthwhile venture for Square. Whether it translate to high sales or is simply a profitable venture for all those involved is another question.

It's amazing how pretty much every company has made a successful hunting action franchise yet Capcom can't make one that is not named monster hunter.

When did they try to make another one before? And why would they want to, anyway? Why would they want to release a competitor to their own game, that doesn't really make a lot of sense.

What they tried with Gaist Crusher was to extend the genre to a younger audience that's too young for Monster Hunter. An experiment that apparently went wrong -- but I don't think there's any other hunting action franchise that targets a young audience, either. The only other one that might come close is One Piece UW Red (it's kind of bad luck for Capcom that both games ended up being released at the same time).

Do Lost Planet 2 and E.X. Troopers not count?

It wouldn't be the first time that Capcom made redundancies in successful genres. When they had Resident Evil, they also had Onimusha, Dino Crisis. When they had Final Fight, they also made King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, Cyberbots. When they had Street Fighter, they also made Darkstalkers, Versus, Rival Schools.

It helps them make more use out of a genre without fatiguing the main game, I suppose.

EX troopers (and arguably LP2) were the previous attempts. Younger audience targeted or not, with both of these games Capcom wanted to ride on their own MonHun success. Of course, they would never make something as close to their own franchise as, say, Toukiden.

I just find it funny and pretty telling about Capcom's franchise management that is not named MonHun. They just have no idea what to do both development wise and business wise.

What Japanese publisher is currently capable of maintaining their decades-old hit franchises and creating new ones? Someone was criticizing Konami earlier in this thread.

I suspect sales of the expansion will prove that a lot of the DQ X Wii U sales did come digitally.

I wasn't being serious, just wanted to make fun of the figurines :p

poor Treasure though, they can't make a good selling game. Nintendo should put them on a Star Fox for Wii U 3DS.

And what about some Wii DQX players upgrading to Wii U? Is there an incetive to do so?

There was for the original version digitally, but not the expansion- which is why I believe the expansion first week sales will be higher than the original.

Sales of DQXv2 are only useful to have an idea how many people are still interested in the game.

Code:
       FW / LTD
   63,958 / 162,435 [PS2] Final Fantasy XI {2002-05-16} (Square)

97,107 / 132,055 [PS2] Final Fantasy XI: Rise of the Zilart - Expanded Data Disk {2003-04-17} (Square Enix)
    4,184 / 50,865 [PS2] Final Fantasy XI: All-in-One Pack 2003 (Rise of the Zilart) {2003-04-17} (Square Enix)

Obviously, download sales and some people may have migrated to the PC version, factors we won't be able to gauge.

Famitsu released a HW sales chart back to '94!? Do you have a link?

Nope, just some charts: http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/2006/10/13/103,1160720249,61666,0,0.html

Does anyone have the numbers of the sales of Wii U software? Like first week and LTD? I remember someone last week posting a link to their site that had stats, but I can't seem to find the link.

Capcom was pretty dumb to release Gaist like 2 and half months after MH4.
Well actually MH4 was originally going to be released at March. That might be the reason behind it.

Online games are so tricky to gauge anyway. FF11 may have sold 'low' but 11 years later and it is still VERY profitable (and still updated 1-2 months with new content too). I bet DQ X has made them a ton of money as well.

I'm sorry but Animal Crossing crossed the 4 million mark a long time ago including digital sales. :p

It's between Pokémon and Monster Hunter now:

Monster Hunter - 3,401,495
Pokémon - 3,390,265

And I think we all know which one will get there first.
(the one not sabotaged by nintendo)
