This new the entry of Yokai Watch 2, is doing quite well, great numbers. It is hard to believe that Level 5 is teasing something bigger than Yokai Watch.
Nice numbers from Wii U, and also great to see some good numbers for Smash Bros, Wii U version, Captain Toad and Mario Kart 8. If they keep like that, Mario Kart 8 may reach 1 million.
And New 3DS is doing quite well.
I surprised for Final Fantasy Explorers, a lot of people complained about the game, even me after playing the demo, lets see how long it will keep on selling.

Yup, it was ridiculous looking back at those who suggested that making Smash for 3DS was a bad idea :p.
Releasing it 1st on the Wii U and then announcing it later for the 3DS could have helped the Wii U.

Nintendo pulled some questionable moves with the 3DS making the Wii U seem less necessary.

A few examples:

NSMB2 on 3DS right before the Wii U launch and its NSMB

DK Returns ported to the 3DS soon before DKTF

Smash Bros released on the 3DS before Wii U

My issue was that we'll never know if it effected potential Wii U sales or not. Why bother buying a system for a franchise that has never seen a handheld release when they release a handheld version? Let alone a version that is the same as far as the roster and mechanics go.

But don't you think Nintendo could have used a bit more Wii U sales from releasing it first?
Wii U is the definitive version: Better visuals, performance, controls and online. In general, it has better playability.

Or let me put it this way:

The negative effect on the sales of the 3DS version would' ve been bigger by releasing the Wii U first than the other way around.

Another thing to consider is that for the serious Smash player the 3DS was an appetizer, a taste of things to come. So that compelled this type of user to get both. Release the definitive version first and then there wouldn't be any incentive for this segment to get the portable version.

So where are retail releases for Minecr.... forget it. Not happening because SCEJ is SCEJ.

I think what this hits on more is the trouble with supporting two platforms.

Whenever you release a similar game on one platform, it gives someone a reason to not buy the other.

The options are to have totally distinct games on both platforms (incredibly difficult to support as time goes on, almost always leading to major droughts or one platform seen as having inferior games when combined with the reality of resources), to let the self cannibalization happen, or to have the platforms share everything a la iPhone/iPad or Android.

3DS version of Smash got first because it was finished first. There's really no complex thing to go about it. We're talking about handheld vs. HD development right here. Could they have just intentionally delay smash 3DS just to see the so-called "potential Wii U sales" when they release Smash Wii U first? Sure they could, but they will be intentionally losing potential early sales of the 3DS and Smash 3DS version, which was huge in a non-holiday environment.

And Smash Wii U sold good already and will sell good in the long run, just unfortunate that it didn't add more new Wii Us to Japanese audience.

The period should be the same as the top10. It's in the first page of the section.

DBFC, can you check the numbers? 32583 =/= 30098 + 2491.

As for Sumikko Gurashi, I don't know how Famitsu got 439 downloads, if the release date was December 4th. Maybe they are polling pirates.

Thanks!

Um, has anyone looked at GC sales and kind of seen Wii U sales as a worse version of those?

2002 GC holiday sales = bad
2003 GC holiday sales = good (thanks to MK:DD & pricecut to $99) <---- done getting cheaper

2013 Wii U holiday sales = good (thanks to good bundles & 3D World - actually better than any holiday sales the GC ever got)
2014 Wii U holiday sales = bad (bad bundles & more expensive than before) <-- has never got a pricecut in JP, entry level price still the same... maybe it'll finally get one?

If I'm not mistaken, the Wii U still remains Nintendo's most expensive console, at least based on its price in the West. Also most of their consoles were far cheaper at this time.

I somehow think Nintendo didn't give the Wii U a small pricecut to allow a larger one later on (and hopefully get more money at the higher prices in the meantime due to MK8 & Smash). Didn't Nintendo keep the GC at $149 (or was it $129) for a while before finally dropping the price late 2003 and getting great sales that holiday? Maybe that's what we're looking at here?

[WII U GAMEPAD]

Another thing that often gets overlooked in discussion (even in this very thread) when considering a Gamepad less SKU is that it "seems" that Nintendo has important plans for the Amiibo toy line. This adds yet another layer to the matter when potentially there could be a product that use the Amiibos as an integral part of the experience, a product that could become another stablished goldmine for the company.

i don't know why i forgot about pointing this out in the other replies since is something i often refer to when debating similar topics XD

Alternatively, Nintendo can allow that 3DS Amiibo thingy to work with Wii U as a substitute.

It's hard to balance if it is wise for Nintendo to sell a GamePad-less sku or not.

I definitely don't think Smash Bros is something Nintendo wants to do for all of their releases going forward, it was somewhat counterproductive. The iOS and Android model has three main advantages that are all of similar importance:

1. It effectively halfs the workload for a number of Nintendo teams and guarantees a steady stream of first party releases for both systems. This also allows certain teams to branch out from their existing franchises.
2. It leverages the strong third party support for Nintendo handhelds, allow third parties to effortlessly support the Nintendo console as well. We already have a good example of this in action with the current Playstation ecosystem but this should be even easier.
3. It loosens the relationship between hardware and software. An individual hardware SKU selling badly will not hold back sales of the top software(like we are seeing with Wii U) and retailers will only have to carry one software library.

The Smash Bros strategy only really addresses point 1 whereas I think the other two points are equally important. It almost seems like too obvious of a way to go, which is slightly concerning, because we know Nintendo doesn't like doing to obvious thing!

The 3ds amiibo thing likely uses the infrared port of the 3ds and is thus incompatible with the WiiU
Yes, but they COULD add a USB cord port (the small one that on the other end is an actual USB connector). Skylanders 3DS did just that with connecting to the 3DS via infrared, but also had said port and it even came with the cord to connect to USB devices, including Wii U. :)

Nice.

This should put things in perspective. 3DS is a fast-selling system, and even declining, still retains good YTD sales.

GamesMaya's Report Days 22nd, 23rd and 24th (Week 52)

- Nintendo is very strong these days.
Top 5 Gift Games of this Year:
1. [3DS] Youkai Watch 2: Shin Uchi
2. [WIU] Super Smash Bros for Wii U
3. [3DS] Super Smash Bros for 3DS
4. New 3DS XL
5. Wii U + Mario Kart 8 Bundle

- Youkai Watch 2 Shin Uchi sales are terrific. The main game of this holidays by far.
On day 24th the vigour didn't stop. A lot of last buyers came to the shop, they needed something to give on day 25th.
Sales are expected to still be strong in New Year's Eve.

----

As Chris said above, week 52 should be still strong (small drops or still an increase) compared to other years since days 22nd, 23rd and 24th are the strongest of the year.

Nice.

This should put things in perspective. 3DS is a fast-selling system, and even declining, still retains good YTD sales.
the big problem is that the 3ds is basically the only popular traditional system in japan. when the ps2 was doing well, the gba was too. when the ds was doing well, the wii and the psp were too. the next best seller is the vita, and that's terrifying.

the vita seems to have maxed out its potential at this point too. i was surprised when in september or october it started coming in at much lower numbers than previous weeks. ytd sales are essentially steady year over year, but i think the only platforms to see ytd improvements in 2015 will be the ps4 and xbox one (maybe).

That's why I said that context is important. 3DS is basically carrying the industry on its shoulders. Just look at software sales; 3DS is way behind PS2 and DS, but is also way, way above all the competitors put together. PSV top-selling games chart is really depressing, as well as Wii U's.

I don't think comparing directly the ltd numbers of a handheld console vs a home console is really that representative when you take into consideration the upgrades into multiple revisions of handhelds and that handhelds are usually used by one person only and there may be various in a household while home consoles are normally a buy once thing for the whole family.

I'm not saying there is no value in the comparison but I think sw sales highlight these differences.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I think there are three main reasons for this; 1) The rise of mobile 2) The collapse of home consoles 3) Schism of third party support due to the success of DS and Wii.

Back in the PS2 days there were two classes of product. If you were making a console game it was a PS2 game, if you were making a handheld game it was a GBA game. Nowadays it's murkier; if you are making a big console game it's a PS4 game, if you are making a small console game it could be PS4 and/or Vita and if you are making a handheld game it could be 3DS and/or Vita.

Last gen was even worse because publishers had to decide whether or not to support the Wii and 360 as well. It's a blessing in disguise that the Wii U and Xbox One are nonentities for third parties.

This is scarey, what happens when 3DS stops selling units? Nothing else in the market looks like it can carry the torch. Im nit sure an entirely new Nintendo hand held will thrive in the mobile gaming market either unless Nintendo have something big up their sleeves.

Interesting but dark days are ahead for sure.

IIRC Japanese mobile gaming market is already larger than all consoles/handhelds HW and SW combined..
Seeing how even PS4 sold less than PSV launch aligned, it´s really no surprise. The dedicated videogame market lies basically on 3DS shoulder alone due to the bad perfomances of all other systems,

Concerning the comment about software sales I have to disagree, 3DS just recently broke a software selling record with the most multimilion sellers in a certain short timeframe, it also is a system with games with considerably higher sales than the most succesful PS2 games, for example games like Animal Crossing for 3DS. Overall software sales may not be the the best, but this isn´t a matter of actual potential, which is shown by the most successful software on 3DS, and the huge success of Youkai Watch, but the lack of investment and also due to arbitrary weird decisions from the majority of Japanese 3rd party publishers.

In fact it has been quite often mentioned that despite the clear cut market situation 3DS is still missing quite a lot of big 3rd party IPs and support, some publishers even beeing totaly absent like Falcom and N1, even compared to seemingly dead systems, another problem is that for whatever reason, publishers tend to make low budget or "cutified" spinoffs of their IPs, instead of putting actual effort and instead of taking full advantage of their own estabished IPs and fanbase. On the other hand many of the actual thought out and well executed efforts are seeing success. The problem in the comparison between the overall software sales is, that there is a gap in support and actual quantity of games.

Alternatively, Nintendo can allow that 3DS Amiibo thingy to work with Wii U as a substitute.

It's hard to balance if it is wise for Nintendo to sell a GamePad-less sku or not.
Thus limiting the user base to that potential big new IP. It is less expensive or bothersome for everyone involved (Nintendo/consumer) to include the NFC in the Gamepad than to sell it separatly as it's own device.

Further more, as of now Nintendo most thing they are into something with Amiibos because they even went as far as adding some extra costs to the New 3DS by including the NFC hardware in the device, instead of just opting to sell the peripheral you are talking about for the 3DS.

The point is that reasons keep piling up on why is not so simple (or a clever idea) to drop the Gamepad.

Eventually the game will end up selling more than the second entry, at least physically.

so I guess a volume 2 is out of the question? fuck.
I do think Sega printed a tiny amount of copies as the collection was meant to be far hardcore fans only.
