Media Molecule's new IP 'Tearaway' Announced

Did MM say they were done with LBP for good, or did they say they would leave it to rest for a bit and come back to it later, perhaps with LBP 3 for PS4?

Never say never but it sounded like they wouldn't be working directly on LBP again.

I'm sure a LBP on PS4 will happen, but LBP2 support + LBP Vita are probably in some senses training wheels for building up the infrastructure and experience for other teams to handle a LBP3, IMO. Supervised by MM and the same LBP producers at Sony of course...

Tearaway has the heart of an action-adventure -- it reminded me of The Legend of Zelda, an instinct confirmed when Crowle mentioned Nintendo's series amongst his influences. The main character, the adorable Iota, will embark on quests, interact with a variety of NPCs and, of course, explore locations completely made of paper.

Many games claim that imagination is their only limit, but Tearaway makes a better claim to that promise than most. Just try thinking of what kind of new ways to explore the action-adventure genre Tearaway could offer -- whatever you can imagine, I'm pretty sure the team is already working on it. In fact, I believe if there is a team that can keep the promises of this early build, that is Media Molecule.

Not sure if new thread-worthy, since it touches on stuff we're talking about here, but there's some more detail on what MM is up to overall here:

http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012/8/16/3246507/media-molecule-ramping-up-for-another-big-project

Their site now has a couple of new job postings for Tearaway also.

So MM has a smaller team working on Vita games, only 15 people doing a Vita game while another big team or other smaller teams do other projects.

Someone explain me again why this can happen with all SCE studios. With all the resource sharing and ease of development it should be relatively easy and would expand greatly the amount of games and potential IPs

A little more from eurogamer. Mostly the same sentiment.

"We're working on a second project right now, and that's very much in an R&D phase," confirmed Media Molecule's Mark Healy.

"The focus is Tearaway, but Media Molecule is a lot more than 15 people," added co-founder Alex Evans.

"We call it in a holding pattern," he said on the unannounced project, "because the focus is on Tearaway. I'm not saying that from a press angle - our focus is on Tearaway and making it awesome. The other project is very much in an early stage and is a toy. You don't need to worry about it."

You read all this shit, you get super psyched, and then the realisation that it's (probably) a year away from release hits you like a freight train. I want to play it now!

You know, if you took the current 360/PS3 pad back in the NES era can you can imagine they shared the same cynicism at that point? You'd be seeing them complaining about sticks not being useful for that particular console then. After that they will completely disregard it as a "gimmick" since the NES era didn't exactly need all those buttons in the first place.

In other words, no matter how you look at it, if it goes further and further away from your "traditional" based gaming, it will automatically be labeled a gimmick. If this was a gimmick, then it's the best utilized one I've seen at that. Games like these should be made in order to help promote features in order to make a more diverse experience traditional consoles don't have. We've already got the 360/PS3 for non-touch gameplay. How do you think the industry evolved from the NES if everytime a new feature on the controller is questioned?

We need this in the OP.

Hype hype hype!

The gimmick stuff needs to stop. YOU are a "god" and thus can manipulate the world of Tearaway, it's not a gimmick it's part and parcel to the game's goal. Gimmick is stopping you in the middle of action to do some QTE swiping. Tearaway has all this stuff built into the core experience, it's expected and makes sense within it's universe.

Polygon has a good preview here with some info on stuff raised here. Although it also raises some other questions!

It's a weird sensation, you know you're just pressing the back of a Vita, but the timing, the detailed animation makes it feel as if you're pressing through the paper of the world.

After noting my finger waggle around in the virtual world I turn to Evans and start to ask "The finger, can you..."

"Yes," he says cutting in. "You can customize the fingers. There are skin tone sliders."

As players work through the game, they receive papercraft trophies all of which can be customized.

"In a lot of games you have the concept of trophies, in this game you get plans and blueprints," Healey said. "Every asset in the game you can print out and make."

Once crafted, the papercraft can be decorated and customized and then put back into the world with the Vita's camera.

"You can close the loop," Evans said. "You can print it out, customize it with Sharpies and then recapture that as a skin for the game."

The team is also planning to use Tearaway's AI to make certain decorations go viral inside a player's game. So imagine, Evans said, if you decorated a papercraft elk in a certain way, but later ran into a dolphin with the same decoration. He tells you he ran into the elk and liked what he saw so decided to use the same decorations on himself.

The game, due out next year, is a multi-hour full-length adventure game.

"It's long," Evans said.

What it isn't is another take on LittleBigPlanet.

"We talked about whether we were going to throw in LittleBigPlanet-like stuff into the game," Evans said. "I'm so glad we didn't ape our own content and fall into that trap.

"Instead we mixed in this twist of the god factor and augmented reality features. We took an action adventure platformer and we Media-Moleculized it."

Okay then, customizable fingers, lengthy adventure, no shoehorned create elements and Vita features used more sparingly than videos lead you to believe means I'm ready to go on media blackout. Love everything about the way this looks, main character is far more appealing than Sackboy, controls seem less floaty than LBP, premise is appealing, I've seen and heard enough. Quite a nice little system seller for my needs!

When media molecule said they were outsourcing littlebigplanet vita i was upset as i felt they were running from the vita, to know one of my favorite local devs are giving epic support to the vita makes me very happy :P

man, this is a big deal, it's pretty damn awesome.

Yes, yes, yes!

I absolutely love the art style of this game. It looks incredible.

This is the type of game that the Vita needs. This is the type of game that Sony has to aggressive market and bundle. The game already has a lot of charm and looks like it could interest both a younger crowd and an older crowd. Hopefully Sony doesn't just throw this game out there and expect people to buy it... they need to make people aware of this game. Like that Forbes article, this is something that the iPhone or the Galaxy S3 can't do. That is what Sony needs to focus on.

I am extremely interested in this game and I can't wait to see more. Really happy to see that it is a new I.P straight from a huge first party.

I don't mind this at all. Clearly they have lots of new ideas and i'd rather them coming up with new cool IP's like this.

The PSP LBP was outstanding and by all accounts the Vita LBP version as well.
I have no problem with LBP being outsourced from here on out.

vita needs more games.

why is it on vita? should be for ps3.

since cross buy is around. i'm sure they will complain they should have a ps3 counterpart too.

Oh I have actually seen a gem of a response to cross buy too! It was 'this will make 3rd parties angry and upset with vita/sony"

Don't ask me what that even means, I still have no idea

Completely won over by the charm :3

!!!

This is exactly what the Vita needs. Not shittier versions of PS3 games. Something unique to the system. Helps that it looks absolutely brilliant, of course.

Gravity Daze, Tearaway and Soul Sacrifice ensures that I purchase it this Holiday. I hope they can add another new IP or two at TGS.

Unless you got a great deal don't you think that is a tad premature with it being a 2013 game and all, haha?

Yeah I got it for 180 basically brand new with the box and everything on craigslist. Came with an 8 gb card, wipeout, and hot shots golf. I also never had a PSP and there are several PSP games I desperately want to play, so I figured that it was worth it even if nothing much comes out after LBPV, P4G, Soul Sacrifice, and Tearaway.

I checked craigslist today though and theres one for 175 thats the 3g version, comes with a 16 gb card, resistance and unchrated. FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU. The original box and all the papers are actually pretty important to me though... I'm pretty anal about perfect condition stuff, like a lot of gaf.

Because Nintendo prefers making good gameplay over having just good graphics in their games.

Cuz you have played this game to know that the gameplay sucks. >_>

Having great gameplay and great graphics is a good thing, and not settle just for one aspect.

Anywho the gif with the water effects is cute as hell. I hope there's a good chunk of exploration in the game

Beautiful. British games :tear:

Why aren't Nintendo doing this kind of thing for the 3DS again?

Invest on a wide-scale across the board into new studios rather than sit on billions of profit and still struggle to support two systems at once?

It just goes to show what a great job Sony has done expanding its stable of first parties over the years to be able to competently support both console and portable at the same time rather than having to switch between them, and they managed this almost entirely from the start with PSP and PS3, and now PS3 and Vita. Meanwhile Nintendo have been struggling to do anything similar after GBA/Gamcube, DS/Wii, and now 3DS/WiiU.

Dem water effects. Gets me every time.

looks soo nice in motion.. I just love the character face...those eyes look cute.

but about MM and next gen... I really really really hope they give us a 3D World Platform Creator...with the option of other models besides sackboy.

I just want someone to create a next gen Mario game....with all the colors and music.

Unfortunately Nintendo doesn't need to create new studios because 'HEY GUYS WE'VE GOT MARIO!!!!' It's sad really.

The guys at MM are incredibly talented. To think this was created by 15 people is ridiculous (kinda even puts other Sony studios to shame, in a way, as they refuse to even get anywhere near Vita). I see them as creating another mascot for the ps4, definitely. After Sackboy and now Iota they know very well what they're doing.

I'm not certain I agree with that. SCE makes questionable decisions. Especially in regards to the US branch.
