Meet the Motorola Droid

So I just went from iphone to nexus one to milestone. I have to admit that I do love this phone the most of all three. The N1 was cool but not as fine tuned as the droid/milestone. I am probably a rarity in that I got a telus milestone off ebay and have it on at&t (yeah I know) so is there anyone else on gaf that got a telus milestone in the US?

For those of you who have the Droid for some time now. Do you feel the Droid is limited by it's 256Mo of RAM? I own a G1 and can't decide what to pick between the Droid and the N1/Desire.
Any suggestions ?

I've got over 50 apps and widgets currently installed and still have over 150 megs of that on board RAM left.

In other words - Thats a negative. :D

But who's to say that Verizon won't hold up N1 updates as they are doing for Droid?

Doesn't Google do the OTA directly for the N1?

As for the Droid...Once you root, the Droid update scandal isn't even an issue anymore. hehe.

Is the Milestone GSM?

The milestone is gsm. But you'd have to get the one in canada on Telus to use it on at&t 3g. Im not sure if its the same as the UK. Considering the UK has 2.1 and I dont I suppose its a bit different

Is Cross fading the same as gapless playback?
I asked this before, but nobody gave me an answer. Does this support gapless playback? I'd be willing to dish out the few bucks that this thing costs, only if it has gapless playback.

Anyone know?

Okay, I think I'm ready to root my phone. Convince me GAF.

I did mine yesterday, mainly for the gallery and the speech to text input. Was really easy and took less than an hour.

Now, a question. I installed smoked glass and all but 2 or 3 of the live wallpapers cause a force close. Anyone have any suggestions?

What guide did you use? Can you point me in the direction of a good one?

rootyourdroid.info

The procedure takes 30 seconds.

Enjoy.

BTW, I've been using AdamZ Smoked Glass 6.01 2.1 based ROM for the past week and it's been running flawlessly and totally stable (Unlike Bugless Beast which IMO is anything but 'bugless'). It gives you all the basics you want and more without being complicated by breaking down the install into a menu system. I highly recommend it as a first ROM if you want to go that direction.

Rooting = giving you administrative access to the phone.

ROM = build of software that will run on the phone.

If you want to install... say 2.1, you'll need to put a ROM on there.

So a ROM is basically just another way of saying a custom firmware?

The original stock Droid Android OS ROM is taken and customized for the better then installed as a replacement.

You know...Just grab the DroidMod installer and let it root and install the SBRecovery for you automatically. You don't have to use the DroidMod ROM (Which is based on 2.01 and not the leaked superior 2.1), when prompted to download it just cancel and reboot your phone. :lol

http://downloads.droidmod.org/dmupdater-10.apk

Install it via your Droid browser in conjunction with ASTRO filemanager, it talks you through the entire process.

Ahh got it. And the general consensus is that the Smoked Glass one is the best?

Everyone has their favorite...But so far it's the one I like the most just for the fact that its been running perfectly stable, fast (I'm not overclocked - keeping the phone at the default 600mhz) and doesn't go over the top with a bunch of BS.

Here is my main home screen currently...

You can switch back to the default 2.1 look if you want to, right?

Also rootmydroid.info is down. That means I can't root it now?

Sure, but I don't want to. I like the black. :)

The textual changes to the notification bar and that app tray with the 'Droid' logo are things I did after the fact and aren't in Smoked Glass. However Smoked Glass is all about the black smoked glass theme and there are other ROM's that are simply stock theme as well.

Install it via your Droid browser in conjunction with ASTRO filemanager, it talks you through the entire process of rooting and installing SBRecovery. From there you can begin trying out different ROMs if you like or even give the included DroidMod a shot to get your feet wet, plus it uses the stock theme with all the little addons of 2.1 without being a 2.1 ROM.

It's very easy to do.

Okay, phone is rooted. I was reading somewhere that I should make an Nandroid backup. Should I do this?

Hey guys which email client do you use? K9 doesnt work on my career. I also dont like the gmail client. Is there any good client? I am rooted if that matters :D

I've never even used the 'Email' client, the Gmail client does everything I'd ever want to do.

Unless you know what you're doing, I can't recommend a 2.1 rom.

Boot the phone, hold the Power and X button, do a Nandroid restore. Don't install a 2.1 rom again.

Okay I'm back. Still rooted, but back to before I installed.

What exactly did I do wrong?

If you followed Womp's advice originally, sounds like you might have tried to install Smoked Glass over DroidMod, a perfectly good 2.1 ROM in its own right.

Having a major problem... its existed on two diff roms now (bugless and cyanogen). Anytime a dl from the market is complete, the market force closes and I lose my install. Wtf. :(

When did Droidmod go 2.1? Droidmod 1.0 is based on 2.01 unless they've updated recently?

Things like that are exactly why I don't use either one of those ROMs. Once again Bugless Beast is anything but and I found out the hard way. :/

Adamz Smoked Glass 6.01 is easily the best ROM I've ever installed, its been fantastic.

Droidmod isn't a 2.1 rom and they've stated they won't be making a 2.1 rom until its officially released.

Blu_led, go with Adamz rom if you want to run a 2.1 rom. Droidmod is good as well. I'm on Bugless Beast and the only thing keeping me from switching to Adamz' is the Helixlauncher 2. I prefer the 3d tray.

If anyone can tell me how to get it to work on Adamz's rom, I'll switch in a heartbeat.

Anything you're looking to do that you can't in Gmail? Usability-wise, it's probably the best mobile phone email client out there.

Damn, you just taught me something, and judging from the conversations I've seen from searching on the subject, a lot of people aren't in the know.

Android could definitely improve the consistency of copying and pasting. I'm pretty sure there's about 3 or 4 different ways to do it in the OS, and many times only one works (such as long pressing to copy the text in a text messgae but not being able to hold caps+drag finger or menu->more->copy text).

Why is that not making any sense to me?

Holy fuck! I never knew that!
Jesus, I always thought copy and paste was terrible on Android.

Heh slide open the keyboard, hold shift, highlight text

EDIT: Copy and paste on Android is awesome. It just needs to be explained better to the average user, as do many features of the OS.

The above method works in browsers and the email apps, and probably some other places. Any text field anywhere in the OS is copypasta bliss, you can hold shift and either use the arrow keys or touch to highlight, Menu + X, Menu + C, and Menu + V work like their CTRL + counterparts on the PC.

In the Messaging app you have to long-press the message you want to copy and select copy message text, for whatever reason. just press the search key and paste it if you want to edit it from there.

+1 internets to you, sir. You made my day. I was launching gmail.com in my browser to copy stuff.

Crap. I completely forgot about using the physical keyboard to copy/paste. Ive always used the long press on the screen and was mad that gmail didnt support this (it should) but thank you for teaching us all something today. This will come in handy! :D

Not sure if you ever figured this out but I went through the same thing last night. Evidently I was choosing the stock option for the processor speed step (I think kernel is the correct term here, but I'm not sure. Anyways, I think you know where I mean). I chose the 1ghz option and everything worked great.

My next problem was getting google maps to work, and ended up doing the following:

1) opened the app Root Explorer
2) navigated to /system/apps
You have to mount the folder as R/W then delete the file then mount back to R/O
3) longpress on maps.apk to remove/delete it
4) rebooted
5) menukey > Settings/Applications/Managed Applications/ menukey > filter > all
6) located com.android.google.apps.maps which has a size of 0.00b or 0.03b
7) clicked it and uninstalled
8) went to the market, located and installed maps. It now works perfectly!!

Now that I've got that out of the way, I've got some questions of my own.

Basically, how do I go about customizing this thing from here on? I've got smoked glass running with the options I selected using the installer, but what if I want to use a different app tray or change the font, for example?
