What specifically are the short comings of the phone. I have an iPhone and love, but I'm hoping Android really pushes Apple to fix some of the silly problems that's been dragging on

The phone or the OS?

I really, really want this phone right now. I'm not sure if I want to extend my contract, or just buy it whenever it comes out... decisions decisions.

Waited in line for a G1 today... and my account is screwed up so I didn't show as eligible for an upgrade! I was super-pissed and left the store, but I'm on the phone with T-Mobile now and they seem intent on making it right. Hope I can still get a phone today.

Here is the wishlist for the phone and for Android in general, after 3 days of use. Some of it is hardware, some of it is general OS, some of it is app-specific. It's just my personal list and might no reflect your own desires.

  • multi-touch -- this would make browsing a lot faster
  • ability to rename and redesign icons
  • ability to organize application menu in ways other than alphabetical
  • to-do list -- calendar is ok for appointments, but a little arduous to use for day-to-day tasks
  • notes -- I want to be able to jot things down at whim
  • multiple accounts in Gmail -- I have my work e-mail routed to my personal Gmail account. I can manage it fine on a computer but I cannot send messages out from that address on Android.
  • Label management in Gmail -- I want to be able to create labels
  • Virtual keyboard -- it's no match for tactile feedback when writing an e-mail or exchanging messages, but if I need to just input a search term, user name, etc., I don't want to interrupt my browsing by opening the keypad.
  • text selection in browser -- maybe there's a way to do this but I haven't figured it out. It only came up because I couldn't read something on GAF that was spoiler tagged.
  • tilt-sensitive orientation -- the default orientation for most of the OS and browsing apps is controlled by whether the keypad is open or closed. You can change the orientation by going through settings in the menu, but that's too cumbersome. There should me an option to employ the phone's tilt-sensitivity for orientation.
  • YouTube is high quality when using wifi but really really lowfi over the cell network. I haven't explored this fully yet but I'd like an option in quality.
  • shortcut for enabling/disabling 3G and GPS use -- I'm not sure if I really need this. I'm kinda being OCD about the battery now and will probably just leave 3G on in the future. Actually, it's pretty simple to switch on/off as it is, so this is a stupid entry on my part.
  • shortcut for silent mode w/vibrate -- right now, holding down the end key gives you the option of powering down or entering silent mode, but silent mode does not feature vibration. Kind of a silly thing to do.
There are probably a few more that I'm forgetting.

But I'm pointing this out because I'd like an already awesome OS to be even better.

Battersea-- if you lower the ring volume using the h/w buttons on the side, it will vibrate if completely off.

The phone is cool!

My only real issues so far--

A lot of my connect time is Edge, I assume everyone in the metro area is on it right now (lunchtime)

I can't seem to get to either my office webmail nor mail.yahoo.com with the browser. That's pretty weird.

Update: I can get to mail in both places fine now.

I've gotten 3G sporadically, I am sure this is becuase the network is hammered, as it got better right after lunch. :)

Got my G1 yesterday. Loving it for the most part. Only issue I'm having currently is setting wallpaper for it. No idea how to get it to not muddle up the image after cropping it for use. Aside from that, toyed around with a few apps. Some seem to have a lot of potential, but wasn't really able to test some out since I'm on the edge network at home currently. The G3 network should be the reat test once I go out today.

Picked up my phone this morning and having a blast just configuring / playing around with it. Never had a smart phone before, so being able to surf the net on a cell is pretty sweet.

I been getting great speeds on the 3g network here in Vegas.

I am really loving this. I *have* had a smartphone before, but it did not compare.

One thing that I don't like too much right now-- it's very easy to overlook a notification on incoming mail, or an upcoming appointment. And I don't think I'm getting notifications at all for my yahoo mail.

Widgets for the main screen would be very nice as well, particularly something for upcoming appointments.

so what's the street price for this?

edit: eehh.. 530$ on ebay... I wonder if those phone works in Canada. I'm using rogers

Got it this morning and loving it so far. I just downloaded an app called Homes that searches for homes for sale and places to rent. Come in handy since I'm looking for a place. It updates automatically, and can use GPS to find places near you or can select from an address.

How's the battery life? Over at the T-mobile forums they say it sucks. The most hours I've read they can get is like 14-16.

Played with one today ... really liked what I saw.

I couldn't really mess around with the OS, because most of it is shut down until you config it to your google account (which obviously I'm not going to do with a store phone). The phone itself though is HOT!

The color does make it seem at little cheap at first, as does its weight. However, the fact it’s so light is great IMO. Somehow I had a brainfart and didn't compare it to the HTC Tilt ... sitting in my pocket (don't ask, it was a longgggg day at work. I'm dumb). Though from memory, it’s lighter, a bit thinner, but a bit longer.

For those wondering if the bottom portion would get in the way when typing ... doesn't seem so. It’s quite comfortable in the hands, and the button spacing is great. The Tilt's buttons are basically touching, so mistyping unfortunately happens if you aren’t careful. I can’t imagine it being an issue here.

Another thing that stood out was the nub. Its feels like a small, grippy, trackball … and it works great!

  • My understanding is that Apple has a patent on that.

Well, firstly, there might be 10 different ways of programming you can achieve that effect and Apple might have 2 of them patented. Secondly, since it's open source, there's not much they can do about it. Someone can just customize a webkit browser to use multitouch.

In the G1's case, however, the hardware doesn't support it.

Hey G1 owners, how customizable are your sound options?

One thing I hate about my iPhone (okay, I hate a lot of things about it, but. . .) is the inability to customize all system sounds. I'd like to set new sounds for text messages. Can you do that on the G1?

My understanding is that it isn't a programming issue. They patented the screen technology (or maybe worse, its an IP) that allows for its detection.

I hope I'm wrong on this ... but I thought it was discussed here. Hopefully that info was incorrect.

TTOB, it seems that you can customize a lot of sounds, depends on the app.

My battery life has been lame, but then again, I've been surfing with it *a lot*. Also, I think it keeps apps runnign in the background, so depending on what is running, that could hurt it too. As most people are in heavy experimentation mode, I would expect batteries to take a beating right now.

Re: Multi-touch-- it doesn't matter how something is accomplished with a software patent, just what it is. Lame, but there you have it. Not likely to show up in a legal way.

I find the browser to be very smooth, and the fact that it doesn't need to re-render as it scrolls makes it better than Safari on iPhone.

Coolest app: Shazam. Hold the phone up to some music playing (like on the radio) and it will ID the music, and give you links to Amazon MP3 store and Youtube of videos by the artist. Incredible.

The Latitude XT is multitouch.

I'm loving the hell out of my phone. I keep a DS game case in the car so I can scan the barcode and wow my iPhone owning friends. It then pulls up all the lowest prices online aswell as locally. It gets em everytime :D

A few other very cool apps have popped up like the Home app mentioned earlier aswell as the MySpace and Mobile Banking app.

:0 wow that is cool

So how much is this under the cheapest plan?

I wanted the I-phone couldn't swallow all the extra money each month since I'm not that heavy of a cell phone user.

Oh please that shit is no where near as intuitive. For one you have to buy a lens to put over the camera to take pictures of very near objects with the iPhone. :lol You don't have to do that with the G1.

Then that application sends the picture to snapper.net and you have to leave the application and pull up prices in Safari. Only online prices at that. With G1 you stay in the application, it pulls up all the lowest online prices aswell as locally (based off your GPS). You can then proceed to buy through the application the item online or it will give you turn by turn directions to the local store you've chosen in the app. Also you can setup to have it alert you when that particular item hits a certain pricepoint. And finally it will give you user reviews aswell. All through the application.

I got mine on Tuesday and I love this phone to death. Shazam, Shopsavvy, Tunewiki and PicSay are great.

One thing it needs is an app killer. It seems to leave the last 6 things you opened running...which sucks...but so far no crashes and it's performed great.

I was in Taco Bell yesterday for lunch and put Shazam on and it picked up what was being played over the speakers in the restaurant....and it was right. Very fucking cool.

Phone is 179 for 2 year contract and data plan of $25 for unlimited internet and 400 text messages + voice plan. That's the cheapest data plan.

I think I might go get a g1 today.... I just got back from a T-mobile store and they are running a sale right now where you can get the g1 for only $149 with 2 year contract now.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention this is with no rebates either the salesman said

Id have to agree snappr for the iphone sucked. i couldn't get a picture clear enough to send. then when i typed it in, the UI of the app looked hideous. Hopefully the iPhone fanboys stay out this thread. it's about the G1 not the iPhone, go troll somewhere else.

After using the phone for a few days, I will say this--

It does not live up to the original hype, but it's still the coolest phone I've ever owned.

It's not as sleek as an iPhone, but it's still quite smooth and slick to use.

The browser is actually quite great. I prefer it to mobile Safari, even with the lack of multi-touch, just because it doesn't have to re-render while you scroll across a page. Pinch and stretch is an overrated feature, the floating +/- on the Android browser works just fine.

The music player is great. Maps is great. Youtube player is great. The keyboard is really great. No more extra strokes for numbers, like on my old phone.

My only complaint right now is one I knew I would have-- not enough apps yet. I imagine this will change very quickly.

After playing around with a couple of days, I'd have to say I'm pleased on my purchase and don't have any regrets of not getting the iphone (I was debating on which I should get on Tuesday). Tmobile service is amazing here Vegas.

The web surting on the 3g network is fast (again... all depend on where you live... here in vegas it's fast). Haven't had a crash yet on the browser yet. The call quality is best I have had in a cell phone. The touch screen is responsive. The apps is probably the sole reason (that and the tmobile service) why I went with the g1 over the iphone. Android seems very promising and hopefully it won't disapoint.

More and more apps are flooding in as the day goes on. We seriously need an Official Android Thread, anyone up for doing the honors??

I think we can do the Official stuff here. It's not like there are a zillion of us G1 owners.

I d/led the LOLcat builder last night... silly.

I also D/Led Toddler Lock. With I had this on my last phone 2 years ago.

There must be some distribution that happens across servers over time, because I didn't see all this stuff yet, and last night peopel were talking about an app on the Market that was not there for me until an hour or so later.

Gooooo walmart!

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200810272037DOWJONESDJONLINE000579_FORTUNE5.htm

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Wal-Mart Inc. (WMT) will start selling the G1 phone at a discounted price starting Wednesday, a Wal-Mart spokesman confirmed Monday night.

Wal-Mart will carry the Google Inc. (GOOG) G1 phone, sold through Deutsche Telekom AG's (DT) T-Mobile USA, in 550 Wal-Mart stores at the reduced price of $ 148.88 for new customers, or existing customers eligible for an upgrade, who sign up for a two-year agreement, Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien said.

Consumers interested in purchasing the T-Mobile G1 can save $31.11 at Wal-Mart as opposed to buying through T-Mobile, which sells the device for $179.99.

The OS on this phone is really cool. It's actually a legitimate iPhone alternative IMO.

Are all the applications free?

Has anyone seen the Nokia 5800 Express? Now that a phone with features. It doesnt lack anything.

Yeah nokias touch interface is really disappointing.

It's a shame because 'Comes With Music' seems pretty cool.

That's weird. I'm pleasantly surprised by how fast they're being released. Not all of them are useful (LOLcat builder) but I'm very encouraged by the speed with which apps are added to the market.

I'm trying to come up with a mobile device solution for my workplace (a small business). We use Filemaker for our database and I have no doubt that someone will come up with an Android app to interact with it.

Okay... one thing that I don't get is google video... it doesn't work on the browser. I know it doesn't have flash on the browser, but why didn't google allow their own browser to watch their own video website that isn't youtube?

Battersea-- they are coming out a fine clip. It's just a little bare, in a completely understandable way. Yesterday's opening of the floodgates was a very good sign. Apps are going up almost hourly.

For 30 days from launch. So, yes for now.

Apparently some of the apps in the Marketplace are linking to paid versions already, although Google doesn't expect the Marketplace to start selling apps until early next year.

Does anybodys G1 squeak when the phone is closed and you touch the bottom right hand corner? Because mine does and its pretty distracting when using it :(
