Mega Man Legends |OT| In a world covered by endless water…

So there's not necessarily a specific gimmick or item needed to beat each boss? I suppose I'll understand more clearly once I play it myself.

Nope, but certain weapons certainly make it easier. Honestly I'd say gameplay is more of a 3d metroid than zelda. The game encourages you too backtrack to previous locations as you unlock new gear to explore.

Eventually through various pieces of gear you discover
every dungeon on the island is just one large dungeon

I thought I could not be more excited to play this. I was wrong. I love Metroid style games.

That's actually pretty good. Looks pretty much how I remembered MML2 looking. Does 1 also have the same characters voices as 2 ?
Corey Sevier actually only voiced Mega Man in MML2 in this game while Suzan Roman voiced Mega Man. Both never voiced Mega Man since.

The PSN version is a lot cheaper than the PC version on Amazon. Who has $10,024 for a video game? Why would you even waste time posting this?
Why would you even waste time playing the PC version? I can tell you first hand that it is easily the worst of the three versions of MML1.

So what control schemes are you lot using? The Lock on is quite irritating and I don't like using the rear touchpad.

Proper way to legends 1, circle strife. Lock in is only really necessary for 2 parts of the game.... The tv studio mini games (balloon pop) and one dungeon where you have to shoot a ceiling tile.

All except Mega Man.

Oh, don't know how I feel about that. Is the voice in 1 even slightly similar that it would be easy to get used to ? I know some sequels with different VAs sometimes try to have the new VA try to be close to the original either naturally or by trying to impersonate the old voice. Any of that here or is it really different ?

Finally!

I finished this game back in high school. Never got to finish the sequel since my original PlayStation got broken. I did love how he lost his most of his equipment and upgrades in the intro of the 2nd game.

First off I want to correct what I posted before:
In MML1 :Corey Sevier as Mega Man
In MML2: Suzan Roman as Mega Man

Their voices seemed pretty similar to me, at least it didn't sound as though there were any drastic changes between MML1 and MML2.
Corey was pretty young at the time and a lot of females voice act young boys so I think they hired her to emulate Corey.

Counter opinion... They sounds absolutely nothing alike and it was super jarring going from mml1 to 2 when it first came out... But both voices worked for me when I got used to them.

Actually......you're right. I went back and listened to the voices and there's a pretty big difference.
So I stand corrected. I guess I wasn't really focusing to much on the voice change back in the day.

Now that I'm home from work, let me make a quick little survival guide for those new to the game.

  • Your name is hippopotamus.
  • Buster parts priority list: Range, power, energy, rapid. Range effects your ability to hit some mid and late game bosses at all. Power is self explanatory. Energy is how many shots you can fire before "reloading" (pausing) and rapid is how fast you get the shots off. The last two are moot because tapping forward resets energy and rapid.... Thus tapping forward and fire is super effective.
  • Your shield is your most important defensive tool. As long as you have it, you're effectively unkillable. If it's down, hide until it's back up. If it's broken, repair it ASAP!
  • Keep a spare buster part handy. Part way through the game you unlock a third buster equip slot
  • If you kick a trash can and the lid stays on, it means you haven't searched it yet and it has something inside.
  • Kick the can in the Apple market into the bakery for some extra early game money, this can be repeated forever.
  • There are no useless items besides outdated buster parts. Never sell anything or you may have to buy it back for much much more...
  • Along with the above, many things Roll makes requires multiple items, so don't get discouraged and sell something if she can't immediately do something with what you give her

Think that's it for now.

Thanks for the advice. I just finished the first couple of bosses, and they were kind of frustrating because I hadn't upgraded anything and my range was ass. What on the screen indicates your shield and how does it break? I only see a life gauge on the left side of the screen.

When you get hit, your lifebar will turn red. If you don't get hit again immediately, it will go back to black after a while. If it stays red, it's broken and needs to be repaired.

I guess I will just have to give it a try either way.

Did any of you guys have a preference on the MML1 or MML2 voice ?

I don't remember having a shield at all in 2, wonder if that changes the feel of the gameplay that much at all.

I still have Misadventures of Tron Bonne to get to, but I would like to start at the beginning.

Has anyone confirmed if this works on PSTV? I heard it was compatible with PSP.

EDIT: The banner says PSTV so I assume so.

Yep it does. I recommend a button remapping:

Thanks, that works out quite well actually and makes perfect sense for the right stick to control the camera. Alright buying the game now, cant wait to play!
Only issue with this is that it makes circle-strafing more difficult without going full-claw, and circle-strafe will save your life in this game. Placing Square (Fire) on R-Trigger and R2 (Lock-on) on L-Trigger should suffice.

What does L2 even do in this game?

Nice list. Reminded me of a bunch of shit that I take for granted now. It should be probably noted, however, that kicking the can for free zenny will deduct "points" from Mega's unseen "Hero" rating, causing him to eventually turn darker.

Yes, MML has an alignment feature. Do good deeds and the citizens of Kattelox will give you platitudes (and Mega will have a nice blue sheen to him), but dabble in the dark side and they'll turn on you. I forget if it affects anything other than how the townspeople respond to him.

I don't remember having a shield at all in 2, wonder if that changes the feel of the gameplay that much at all.

It's not in 2, as far as I can recall. Guess they got rid of it because it was such an annoying feature to deal with.

Yeah, it was confirmed earlier to work on PSTV just fine.

So is it required to know much about the other Mega Man games to enjoy this? I have only played the main "classic" series.

Nah. The game will eventually drop a reference or two to an older series as a joke, but that's it. They're pretty blatant most of the time, too.

Thanks for the confirmation. The PSTV is crazy. >_>

iirc Volnutt's alignment affect prices

also if you want to, just kick the can into the trash bin

also boxes can also contain items

I'm about an hour in and having a great time. I keep getting memories of my first time playing this in 1998 or so and having so much trouble with the first series of boss battles. Man, that really is a lot to handle so early on in the game, especially when your first special weapon is just the landmine.

I think if this first game had MML2's gameplay improvements, it would probably be my favorite. MML2 is fantastic, but the status ailments are a hassle and the entire water dungeon is garbage. I liked the variety of locations, but by the end you miss out on the way Kattelox Island is set up. There's a lot to like about both games, to be sure.

Edit: Regarding what the above posters said about checking holes in the wall... there's a hole in the very first mini-dungeon on Kattelox that contains a very nice sum of zenny that you can use to buy health increases at the Junk Shop, which will help a lot with the upcoming battles.

While the alignment system is there, the can trick does NOT effect it.

Are you sure you're not thinking of kicking vending machines for free soda?

This is a great list! I hope you don't mind, but I'm gonna stick it in the OP :)

I'm sort of amazed there's actually an explanation for this

If you walk into the video store you can click on the kiosk and it says something like, "This game is called MegaMan Legends, looks interesting."

Inception

And there's real life explanation too.

The character's name in Japan is Rock Volnutt. When they localized the game, they gave no fucks and just changed "Rock" to "Mega Man."

This is the one MegaMan game where I wish they kept it as Rock.

Wow, I did not know about the light vs. dark mechanic in this game and Legends 2.

Guess I never did enough to make Mega Man dark or light.

If only they could graft the controls of mml2 into mml1. The difference is night and day despite being a nearly identical style of game

Are there any major missables in this game?

I read failing certain side-missions means you can never do them again, but is that true?

The home bombing and the police chase are the only real ones I can think of. Nothing you can miss is anywhere near game breaking and if you watch the news on the flutter, the events will be telegraphed for you so you can save before attempting them.

Boxes, bookshelves, holes in the wall... check all the things!

Check all the things is right!

Game's pretty hard, barely beat Tron and Bon the first time with only a sliver of health left.

Also, WHOA, Bon Bonne is Pikachu. It's so obvious now that I listen to him.

I posted my thoughts on the first hour of Legends in the PSN Thread, so I will share it here :).

After playing a good hour of Legends, I have to say, I am very impressed with the game :D!

The presentation is really damn impressive for the PS1; the character designs and models look fantastic and have a lot of style, the animations are lively and the facial expressions are way ahead of its times (compare this to Metal Gear Solid 1; night and day difference).

The music is catchy but the dungeon areas have a lot of ambiance instead of the up-beat tunes you expect out of most Mega Man games, but it works considering how you are supposed to feel un-ease with the locations you are in.

The gameplay is something that really impressed me honestly; for a series that had very strict 2D roots, they did a outstanding job working with the PS1 tech in creating a great game engine and strong core gameplay.

While you don't have analog control, you have two ways to move around; the D-Pad (or Left Stick on Vita) and L1/R1 (or Right Stick thanks to Vita). You can move in all eight directions with the D-Pad but you are always facing foward, with L1/R1 changing where you are looking. Then you have a lock on button with R2 (R on Vita) that locks in you place but you can look around and have better aiming.

This set up really impressed me, as it is far advanced than other games of that era....and this came out BEFORE games like Jet Force Gemini and Zelda OoT (both games that really took a lot from from Legends mechanics-wise) that introduced refinements and other gameplay ideas based on Legends ideas.

And the gameplay doesn't feel dated, even though its clearly rooted in the past where these systems never were really used before. Plus having custom controls on Vita/PS TV really helps things too :D.

The humor and charm of this game is very strong as well and while I'm not that far in, the VA so far has been very impressive and my experience with Tron Bone showed me how fun this world can become :).

I love this game and I am so happy I can FINALLY play it XD! Just a word of thought though; there is steep frame-rate drops during the Market section of the Island and if you set things to 'Fast Disk Read' the textures get all bugged-out.

Long story short, I love the game and I glad I got it :D!

This came out before Zelda? Huh, I feel like in my memories it was the opposite.
