Mega Man Legends's story is AWFUL

Judge it on its own terms.

Obviously was not a high budget game, but that didn't really hurt it. Character out the wazoo.

Of course I might like it more now, but back then I was just stoked to play Megaman in 3D! I was expecting it to be like the 2D games in gameplay, just in this epic 3D enviroment!

I never understood this game as a kid. It's amost an ultimate insult towards what Megaman was for me.

I guess people who liked anime back then were drawn towards this abomination.

Though I have to admit, the characters looked super cool to me and still do, wtf graphics magic.

In the run up to this game it was like "oh this is Mega Man 3D! This is to Mega Man what Mario 64 was to Mario!"

And there was this realization that NO it was NOT that. It's a failure at that.

But after that point, a lot of us realized that it was an amazing game by its own merits... More of a colorful action RPG than a real Mega Man game.

Oh and btw, Mega Man was always totally anime. You're the reason they changed the box art in the western NES versions... to fool you that it wasn't anime! It's the game version of Astro Boy for cryin out loud! And Mega Man X is to Mega Man what Dragonball Z was to Dragonball... exact same intentions.

After seeing the shitastic Mega Man X7 (attempt at 3D)... I'm glad they made MML something else.

Yeah. It has not aged well at all. The camera is now terrible and the VA and such is embarrassingly bad.

It was really good at release, though. Hard to go back to.

It's a game that NO-ONE, including normals gamers and reviewers, liked when it came out. Reason they aged like crap? Because they were just that, crap, when they came out. It's like people forgot how horrible the camera for instance was even on PS1 standards.

Then came Megaman Legends 3 and those two were celebrated like they were Metal Gear Solid and Super Mario 64 in one package. What the christ.jpg

Dunno about critics but people fucking love MML and MML2. People weren't hyped about a third for shits and giggles.

You are right, but the characters were purely visual designs, not talking and acting dummies. It's the same kind of travesty as what happened to Sonic when he went 3D... suddenly he became this shitty character with even shittier friends that are now celebrated wank & fanfic material.

Fuck.

Eh? You gotta love when people try to pass their own opinion over as fact.

If anything they had average to good reception even from critics. Look them up on game rankings and you will see that it seems to be in the 70-80 range.

They were great games back then and are still great fun to play today.

Jeez, you were like one of the three posts that was actually on topic.

well yeah I was going to say something then I realized it was covered in pages of gifs and over-reactions.

I mean I was going to criticize the story but then again , there's been worse. The story looks like it gets a bit convoluted like say Kingdom Hearts or take your pick Final Fantasy game but none the less the game more than warrants enough of a good outlook based on it's gameplay and rpg like daring direction it took with a 3D entry. Like I said I vaguely remember my time playing it but none the less a ton of time was spent on it cause it was a very good game, storyline took the back seat in this case.

The camera was shitty, and yes it was bad day one.

But me and my bros enjoyed the hell out of that game back when it came out.... and we were pretty old by that point. It was a Playstation era classic....

Actually I get that sentiment.

But MML didn't turn me off in that way. I don't think anyone really took it too seriously... Were there fanfics? :P

The way you describe this is exactly how I feel about the Kingdom Hearts series. Initially a fairly loveable romp into various Disney worlds, it became this mess of nonsense words and anime tropes.

I was a huge fan of One Piece up until Skypeia. Sure, the setting was nice but that arc was just straight up boring. Then One Piece got awesome again during Water Seven. Everything beyond Enies Lobby however has ranged from okay to bad. The War Arc was honestly the worst pile of shit I've ever watched. In the way they have convoluted the story in typical Shonen-fashion, I'm not sure I can ever bring myself to watch the show again.

Oh right, the thread is about MML? Why are you only playing a game for its story in the first place? I've beaten maybe one third of the PC version and while I didn't think it was as good as GAF was making it out to be, it wasn't bad, especially not for its time. The graphics looks relatively good even today.

the game is quite good imho..
can't really understand your issue with it, but hey it's your playtime, by all mean play whatever you feel comfortable..
for example for all the love bf3 gets, I've played so many fps in my youth that i can't really stand any fps anymore :)

Wow! I guess the thing is, you came into this for the story. I love the series but have no clue about what is actually going on there. My love is for the BEAUTIFUL dungeon crawling adventure loot-feast and amazing soundtrack.

I know MML is more focused on story, but if I came to a game like Mass Effect 3 for the story like most people would; I would have been disgusted too. Just like legends: Skip dialog, crawl, collect, equip, go into the unknown knowing you have a good enough build to survive.

This is that PS1 game? I played it. Don't remember much of it except that the environments were painfully drab and the shooting was kind of shitty. Yeah, it wasn't a great game. Lol.

Why would one watch the anime and not read the superior manga version?

meh anime was actually pretty good, not recently, but shit overtaken really sets the mood for arlong arc, and theres a load of scenes that were very well done. hiruluk's scene satnds out.

Hey did you just imply sabondy arc as ok... shit... take the back!. seriously though, I suppose this thread is one large case of stop liking what I don't like. (or rather the opposite).

One Piece is great until you realize it's the same thing over and over again

Like others have said about MML though, the precursor story stuff is minor and the game is still overall pretty light in tone. Still very much like an 80s-90s anime.(In fact the crazy shape shifting ancient robot girl storyline is pretty much that as well lol)

I always preferred Brave Fencer Musashi as my 90s anime the videogame over Megaman Legends. The facial expressions were pretty great at the time though in MML.

So in this thread you're calling Mega Man Legends and One Piece shit.

Have fun with your terrible taste!

I always figured the characters, tone and "charm"(not a fan of that word) were the reasons the game was so well regarded by most in the first place

Moreso than its gameplay, which admittedly is kind of(extremely) repetitive and uninteresting

Oh no you di'int.

Legends 2's story, for the most part, makes sense. The last act of the game deals with apocalyptic themes foreshadowed in the Zero and ZX games, and it adds multiple layers of complexity to Volnutt's character that develop his backstory. Even then, though, the game doesn't take itself too seriously. A lot of humorous boss battles, harrowing dungeon crawling, and breaks in-between preceded the grand reveals at the end. Other elements like the excellent VA and quirky dialogue carry each major character through the whole narrative; needless to say, finding a replacement for Teisel's voice actor in a new Legends will always be difficult.

The above applies to Legends 1 as well. But Legends 2 deals with greater contrasts than its predecessor and, naturally, I feel like I need to talk about Legends 2 more. Only the final, final moments of Legends 1 show anything truly threatening (though some would say the Sub-Cities hint at the ensuing near-apocalypse). For games rich in adult themes, Legends 1 and 2 benefit from assured acting and sensible story direction. It also helps that parts of the two games still hold up today (Legends 1's universe, cutscenes, and customization; Legends 2's epic scale, controls, and overall challenge).

In short: why even make this thread if the OP can't provide specific arguments? Some plot points in Legends 2 are genuinely ambiguous—why attack the parts that make sense?

Why would one watch the anime and not read the superior manga version?

I personally find the anime entertaining enough on it's own. But I'm one of those weirdos that can sit through a bunch of filler episodes and not rage. In fact, I usually find them entertaining!

The only thing awful about Legends would be setting up controls on a Logitech controller on a emulator after being accustomed to N64 control layout.

:/

I guess the reason I'm posting this topic is because the game starts off so damn good with its thirst for adventure, creative characters, and ability to poke fun at itself (like One Piece), but then ends up crawling up its own ass and becoming typical anime fodder aka garbage (like One Piece). So here's my question so that this topic doesn't read completely like a livejournal post: What other games start out lighthearted and fun, but eventually end up becoming utter trash?

Not saying you are right with those two, lighthearted and fun stories can still be endearing when they enter their epic parts if done correctly.

But I will tell you the one that does it worse of all in videogames are Kingdom Hearts saga and Sonic Adventures/Sonic 06.

I played MML2 first - still got my save right outside the final boss, which I've never beaten.

I have very fond memories of the game, though there's one dungeon (with rising/falling water, I think?) that I recall frustrating me.

I wasn't able to enjoy MML1 on account of it lacking the dual analogue controls that worked so well in the sequel.

I remember that back in the PS1 age I loved the MML character design, its artstyle but the controls where horrible and the graphics were mediocre for me back then. And the game as a whole was boring for me. I always loved the 2D megaman games btw.

Regarding MML3, I think that its graphics looked horrible too even if I liked the character design. I think it's justified to can it if it didn't reached the quality standards. It wasn't going to sell a shit. I prefer to can it and to do it with the proper quality somewhere in the future.
