Megaman is sh**, learn about Metalstorm.

The boss fights were pretty sweet (and challenging) but the level design was crap, the levels were so short and simplistic that you could pretty much memorize them after running through them 2 or 3 times, after which it became extremely monotonous to keep running through them just so you could get bitch slapped by the boss three more times. That's the main reason why Metalstorm pales in comparison to the Mega Man games, with Mega Man the levels don't feel like a chore to play through.

This thread has reminded me that I have been meaning to buy Metalstorm. Just snagged a copy on ebay for <$10. I advise all others to do so as well.

Metalstorm looks like a lot of fun, and I intend to try it out, but that doesn't in any way make Mega Man any less great.

Nice review. I played the crap out of this game when it came out, though I don't think I ever finished the first quest. It always reminded me more of Contra than Mega Man, probably because there was a little more of an emphasis on shooting, and you lose weapon upgrades when you die (at least, iirc). I also wonder if part of the reason for its commercial failure at the time was the lack of a famous / marketable character; you said it yourself, it was up against Double Dragon, a Batman game, a Simpsons game, etc. Trying to sell a game featuring a generic orange mech was probably not easy.

Also, in fairness to GAF, I have seen this game pop up in a few NES-related threads.

I've had the cartridge of this game since I was a kid. Seriously one of the best NES games ever, I have played through it probably a dozen times.

I never owned Metal Storm but a couple of friends went on and on about it and I read magazine reviews that said it was awesome.

So I believe you when you say it was awesome, but Megaman was also awesome. Up to Megaman 4 at least.

I actually remember a Nintendo Power article in 1994 that included this game in an ''overlooked NES games'' article, along with stuff like Vice Project Doom and Little Nemo.

And holy shit, I have that Strategies for Nintendo Games book he has at the beginning of the video! It's so completely useless.

I could swear I've played this before, it looks too familiar to say I haven't.

Metal storm was one of the best games on the nes. It also had some of the best, most fluid and freeform combat of the time.

Reminds me of alien soldier, which was also amazingly awesome.

Okay, just played this through lvl 2 now... simply incredible!! And yet this is never mentioned anywhere. This guy knows his stuff. :D

This is more of a testament of how much YOU don't know since ANY kind of action gamer worth their salt already knows about Metal Storm and other IREM classics.

PS: don't bump shitty threads ever again.

Should have been

Time to give up on the games that you hate
No time to scould or rebuke, criticize or berate

But that's just me.
