Mel Gibsons Hacksaw Ridge Official Trailer

The movie looks like oscar bait written all over it. The casting seems terrible and the accent is laughable. However, Mel has directed some pretty amazing movies so.....

I don't have a problem with the accent at all, perhaps because I'm from the UK and I'm used to terrible accents in films.

Garfield seems perfectly cast to me, got a very good vibe from his performance in this. Gibson films can get carried away with patriotism, but they're usually entertaining. I'll keep an open mind.

The hero we need.
Are you talking specifically about The Patriot? Because as a Director, this is his first movie set in the US.

On the one hand, Mel Gibson's films are always good (to great), on the other hand, the cast looks questionable, and the plot, true or not, sounds dumb as hell.
I'm sure the battle scenes will be cool though, which sorta flies in the face of having a movie about a pacifist in war.

Talking about Mel Gibson, all your historic movies are very shit about real facts.

History Buffs: Braveheart

I'm shaken to the core.
Always assumed that BraveHeart (and of course, Apocalypto and Passion of the Christ) were painstakingly recreated historical pieces!

Looks quite good although not sure of that cast.

Hate on Gibson if you want, he is a piece of shit for what he did but you know upbringing, alcohol abuse are the bigger picture and making a genuine effort to change, apologise and learn do count for something and that can't be said about a lot of known scumbags past and present. Second chances are hard to accept in many cases.

Can't shake Garfield and that accent.

But Doss was a badass

Corporal Desmond Doss of the 77th Infantry Division is, as far as I can tell, one of the only people in American history to receive the Medal of Honor – the country's highest award for military bravery in the face of thousands of fanatical enemy combatants psychotically unloading a hellacious cloud of bullets in your direction with varying degrees of accuracy – not only without ever actually firing a shot in anger, but without ever even actually carrying a weapon into combat in his entire life. Not a rifle. Not a knife. Nothing.

He didn't need one to save the lives of at least 50 men in a single battle and become the first Conscientious Objector to ever earn the Medal.

Being a pacificist in war doesnt make the war any less chaotic and hellish. Kind of why this guy's story and achievements are so incredible and impressive

Feels like a new Windtalkers, big WW2 spectacle based loosely on facts but a big flop.

IIRC, the budget on this is actually not too crazy, since it's reported to be around $55 million, thanks to tax credits from Australia. It's not to say that it still can't flop, but it doesn't have nearly as big a hole to climb out of.

The trailer looks like something I would catch on HBO or Netflix, and enjoy. That said Mel Gibson at times has been a pretty awesome director (Apocalypto might be my favorite thing he has directed).

No matter if the movie sucks or is great, Desmond Doss is 50 times the man I will ever be. What an amazing individual. If anything I hope the movie gets his story out to more people. I am a Marine and I have read several accounts of Medal of Honor winners (they always humble me), but this is one of the most unique ones I have ever read.

but a common problem with "pacifist" war movies is that if done well, it is very difficult to not make the "chaotic and hellish" war look cool.

That guy is a badass.

My god. This man was what all humans should strive to be. The self sacrifice to help others is off the chain here. What a truly inspiring and amazing individual.

Forrest Gump was in too many wars.

But seriously, loved it by the end of the trailer. Garfield looks ridiculous but I'll give it a go. Sam Worthington actually looks like he'll act worth a damn for once.

I guess everyone hates Andrew Garfield now because of Spider Man. I always though he was a pretty good actor. He was pretty great in Never Let Me Go.

I wish Paul Dano would play the lead role.
He would be great if you enjoys an actor who screams constantly and has no ability to deliver a subtle performance.

Is Andrew Garfield that skinny in real life, or is it similar CG to how Chris Evans looked like in Captain America?

I don't know about the acting/casting there, but that looked good enough to me give it a chance. I hope it's good. I'm all for Gibson coming back to work as a director again.

Andrew Garfield is jewish, right? Mel definitely going for redemption I guess, haha.

Apocalypto is admittedly one of my favorite films, will probably watch this.

People worried about Garfield should be just as worried about Vince Vaughan being cast in a serious role again after the disaster that was his character in True Detective S2.

I'm guessing he's going to be in the movie for 10 minutes or less. He doesn't look like he has the kind of role that can be stretched out.

People are awfully quick to forgive Mel after everything he did.

Quick to forget? It's been ten years since Gibson's infamous arrest in 2006 and the fallout still hasn't settled completely. You can't have any discussion about Mel Gibson without this cropping up in either the 2nd or 3rd post.

Since it focuses on a medic it's going to be pretty hard to bring this to the screen and not put a huge focus on the terrible personal cost to war.

Dude is a known spewer of shit, but I guess being a white man in Hollywood lets you get away with a lot of things.

It destroyed his career. How'd he get away with anything? Should he have never been allowed to make another movie? Or served prison time? Or what?

Anyway, Andrew Garfield and that accent aren't getting along well lol. Movie looks solid though.

Movie itself looks pretty Oscar bait-y.

Well, how long is enough exactly? Its been a decade. His career came to a screeching halt, and he's been clawing his way out since. I like to hope people can see their need for help, accept it and change. People forgave RDJ and then some. It's not like Mel killed somebody like Ferris Bueller, though his incidents with drunk driving are atrocious. And let's not forget that Roman Polanski got a standing ovation.

Though yes....not feeling the movie much. Seems cheesy and badly cast, but the true story is amazing.

I'm willing to bet you watch movies with other people who are shitty people or have done shitty things. That said, people who do shitty things can still make good products.
