Mercenary Kings Early Access Impressions

Oh sorry, I meant I've run into it with my own code. It just means that somewhere in the code they tried to reference an object's member before it was instantiated. Pretty common exception.

ahh I see, is it them then, as the support forum is no help, and they think it is something my end

You can't shoot diagonally up and down in this, right? I'm not just missing a button mapping on the controller or something?

Fun Fact - The reload takes about 20 seconds until it reaches the yellow area, there is no green in the active reload bar. It's also so heavy that there will be a few jumps in most levels you won't make without doing a glide jump or eating spike damage. Fun to use though.

I'm really enjoying this, especially in co-op. Gonna need to pick up the soundtrack whenever possible.

Can someone tell me how to beat the Treasure Hunter mission? I know where all 10 coins are but I don't know how to reach this one.

I wasn't able to do this by shooting down, but if you change to the receiver you can reach it.

I wish that dodge rolls gave you invulnerability and you could cancel jump animations with them. I'm not satisfied with the mobility of your character. It feels like you're forced to trade hits sometimes when you'd rather be flipping around dodging stuff.

I think I have missed the boat by a long way in trying to get a copy from Dunder, but will look out for this in a sale at some point way down the line anyway! Looks great from what I've seen.

I've played for ten hours so far and boredom is setting in now. I'm in the middle of the Sergeant missions and there just isn't enough variety in the types of missions. It's really the only complaint I have with the game.

anyone playing with an arcade stick? if so how is it

I'd like to do a custom stick for this it would be fun to put the art together.

I could see this happening I'm only about an hour in, does the music ever change during the missions? I assume since we are in beta it will be patched with new music.

Yeah, there is different music but I can't say for sure when it changes. I want to say it's at some point during a new set of missions. Basically, a new song per rank but I don't think it starts at the very first mission.

Cool I expect the overall game won't change that much from what we have now so kind of depressed we won't get more variety. It's fun just to look at the backgrounds, I could run around camp for 30 min just checking stuff out watching the animations.

Yeah, the games looks fantastic. Despite the lack of variety I am still enjoying going through past missions to hunt for parts so I can make more guns. That part is a lot of fun.

I hope in the official release we get a lot of new weapons to craft that part seems pretty cool and would be even better if a little deeper.

I'm not a backer and have never played Metal Slug. After about 3 hours I like it, even if it is a bit repetetive. I just hated how a couldn't complete a 30 minute mission, because my weight was too high, with no way to change it without aborting the mission.
I do enjoy the controls quite a bit, including the jump. Definitely worth the preorder.

you need to put it in feedback section on the steam forum...

my copy still does not run, so I asked on his main site for some help after posting on the steam forums...

and in a roundabout way he said he did not really read the steam forums as it is full of "noise"

And I dont mean to make you mad, he even mentioned people moaning about the "JumpLag"

"we'd like to.. i read some of the thread over there, it's just that the signal to noise ration is really bad. Just check those "jumping lag", "metal slug ripoff", "keyboard control so broken", "not worth my money" kind of thread to know what i mean."

I don't mind the jump lag so much anymore. Gives the character a nice weighty feel. However, more mission variety would be nice and I doubt anyone is against that.

Another complaint I'm not sure has been mentioned....

The weapons are static. They don't have animations such as a sway, reload or knockback. Now, I understand this may be due to the large amount of weapons and parts they would need to animate with a small team/budget, but even just having it sway with your character as you run would be so much better. As it stands they feel like a strange jpeg your character is holding still. It's just there...floating

Hot damn! Just got the minigun with armor piercing rounds. Tore through the second boss in about 5 seconds. It's something to behold. And dat minigun glide.

I played for four hours in one go and cleared out the private missions and a few of the next rank, but as hard as it is to stop playing because of the great art, fun control, and humor, the repetition is keeping me from wanting to fire it up again. I may not go back until the full release.

The official forums are full of comments on the jump lag one of the Tribute staff said it's intentional and from the sounds of it they don't want to change it. I don't find it that annoying it's better than the floaty jumps in LBP at least. It fits in with the choices they made with armor weight etc.

I really want to play this game but every time I boot it up it starts in some weird resolution so I only see a portion of the screen. Anyone else running into this problem?

Well I reached a point where I can no longer continue the campaign because of a bug. It's towards the end of the Sergeant rank. The main objective is to kill 23 enemies in a particular area but there are only 20 of them there. I'm not the only one experiencing this bug, either. Hope it gets fixed soon so I can continue.

There a reason why the steel soldier wouldn't be spawning? Only managed to see him pop up once, but never again on any of the recruit missions he's in.

Look at your map for a skull and crossbones mark. I've noticed that with the bosses there are typically multiple places they can appear. Usually two or three.

I know the spots he spawns at, but I'm not sure what actually activates it. Just walking within the 'gate'?

Finally gave it a try, it's certainly a lot different from what I was expecting. The Monster Hunter similarities are definitely very apparent, from the missions and ranking to the crafting and even capturing. And here I was thinking this was just gonna be Metal Slug + Paul Robertson.

I'm only into the second tier of missions but I've had by far the most success with making my weapon hit as hard as possible while disregarding magazine size and anything else. Which means that building a magazine upgrade seems to be a downgrade, which is odd I guess. I really love blowing up heads, that's for sure.

Anyways I might give the game a rest until it's in more of a complete state. It's kinda boring having no sound effects, for starters. The multiplayer didn't work for me either, just got stuck on 'joining'.

uh, that sounds pretty assholish

"metal slug ripoff" surely is meaningless, but to pile that up with other proper concerns? if everyone's bitching about your jump maybe there's a reason for it dev dude.

Videos look great.

Mercenary Kings reminds me of Metal Slug, Contra and Super Metroid. I also trust Tribute Games; TMNT on GameBoy Advance and Scott Pilgrim were darn good games.

I look forward to getting this on PS4 when it releases.

It'd be cool if they added a trading system. Been multiple times when I had materials that my team mate needed. Would also be good if I could do something more with the junk materials. I have so much aluminium right now that all I can do with it is sell it and add to my ridiculous amount of money.

I've read the forums and maybe what he meant was each thread turns into a bitch fest about the same thing. They also devolve into the usual internet BS I don't think they are complaining about the bug reporting and or jump suggestions. I'm just guessing I don't know this.

can report that it plays great with a stick

my only issue is that it recognizes the PS3 one just fine, but the button layout is super weird. Guess I can fix it by using something like motionjoy, unless it overlaps (does with joytokey)

Bought it, like it quite a bit (awesome art, awesome music, good gameplay). But after two hours or so it all feels a bit same-y. I wish the environments were a little bit more varied and I really don't know if the weapon customization stuff alone can keep my interest.

Surprised how much I'm playing and adoring this. The structure is a lot like patapon, has anyon discussed that yet?

Bought it and...it's only OK.

Very mediocre. The gun mechanics that the game is pretty much based upon are pretty horrid at the moment as there are some parts that are 100% above and beyond better.

Not to mention the fact that adding a magazine makes just about every gun worse (no idea). Using no magazine makes you gun instantly better (go figure).

While you can get USED to the jumping, doesn't make it good. I'm used to it by now, but it still sucks.

I walked up to the multiplayer thing and clicked "find game" just to see what's out there... it just takes me to a "joining..." screen forever and no way to cancel out. lame.
