Metal Gear fan remake cancelled [David Hayter trailer inside]

I fully understand whenever a fan project gets canned by the powers that be. There are so many legal pressures for a company to protect your copyright, and your brand.

Honestly, the efforts of most fanboys should be channeled into making an original IP that they control. You can base it on the properties you love, and wear your influence on your sleeve... but the need to be "part of the canon" is a self-defeating nerd desire that works against all your hard work.

Instead of making a remake of Metal Gear 1, why not make a totally new game inspired by Metal Gear 1?

This. Very this.

LOL at that "Kept you waiting, huh?" at the end hahaha

In all seriousness tho... this didn't look very good. There was that other MGS project that was looking really nice. Forgot what it was.

OH well.

Konami haven't done anything shady here at all - they've protected their IP, which they are obliged to do. The fan remakers are the ones doing something "shady", by any legal definition. I'm all for fan projects, but I'm also aware that they are totally illegal.

They aren't illegal when the get permission from the rights holders, which they did. Konami let them work on it for months then went back on that.

How exactly were the fan remakers doing something shady? Seems like they were on the up and up the whole way until Konami reneged.

uh could someone fill me in on the part where konami shut this down

all i remember is them approving of it before it got canned

so you actually saw alot more of it than the trailer?

C'mon, you could see what the quality was going to be from that trailer where they clearly compiled everything they had done so far.

The art was so bad, just an imitation of Shinkawa's style.

Yeah, Metal Gear Solid is more like a remake of Metal Gear 2.

Anyone that remotely likes Metal Gear should do themselves a favor and play Metal Gear 2.
It is the best of then entire series imo.

:lol Damn, bruh.

I'ma gonna risk it and assume the dude's waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much of a Kojima fanboy.
That or he's mad jelly he don't got the skills to make an MG remake.
...and didn't Konami themselves or was that Kojima, that were OK with the fan remake?

The overlap between MGS and SH fans is substantial (especially now, since a huge number of MGS fans are going to buy Silent Hills because of Kojima's involvement) and they're both made by the same company. When any company does something shady in one area, it casts doubt on their whole operation. Anyways, I'm just pointing out that Konami seems to have a pattern of creating a lot of hype and/or good-will and then deflating it with asinine business decisions. It's not a problem I've noticed with other companies which usually maintain a more consistent reputation for better or worse.

Shutting down this Fanproject influences my buying decision in Silent Hill and Metal Gear about zero percent.

ice fucking cold!

Right?!

Sn4ke_911 is a cool dude, man! He's free to feel that it looks like hot garbage. I, on the other hand, would have been willing to at least give it a shot. A 3D version of the original Metal Gear is something I would love to play... But no worries, either way, since we will get our MG and MG2:SS remakes
at the end of MGS5! (BELIEVE.)
Besides, if I were to call anyone else "waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much of a Kojima fanboy," I would just be throwing stones at glass houses!

And yes! Fan-made Metal Gear remake approved by Konami

I'll never understand why companies don't greenlight these projects themselves. That's practically free money with very low input.

Right?!

Game was still in its early stages, we can never know if it would be crap or not til it's been played.

...and thanks for the link, heck it even had its own thread here on GAF! MG company be flip flopping, someone tweet Kojima so he can get it back on track.

Industry professionals were involved with this project:

“I should have probably mentioned that Hayter was helping with the script too, along with that we had other industry professionals on the team as well:

  • Adhem Belkhadra from Ubisoft (Gears of War, Just Dance, the Cursed Crusade, etc.) working on the level mapping.
  • Kaue Lemos from Insane Games (Earth Under Seige, Bubble Up, etc.) working on the sound effects.
  • Orion Acaba (Fire Emblem, Infamous series, etc.) working on the voice acting.
  • Paul Eiding (Roy Campbell) was also on board in a cameo.

Besides that we had a guy from Sony’s XDev team working with us but left due to availability and we had interested from ATV/Sony Music Publishing who wanted to provide the games soundtrack.”

People still have sour grapes about this? Do you still complain about Michael Keaton not being Batman anymore?

Well considering how the two movies after his last one turned out...

Not even Michael Keaton could have saved them.

Heh! Some people need very little to form an opinion, fellow Gaffer. ;-)

Don't mention it! I remember reading that thread way back when, but had completely forgotten about it until now. I have no idea as to why they gave this project approval only to cancel it a few months down the road... I guess having Hayter voice Snake was just a step too far! :lol

Industry professionals were involved with this project:

I respect the effort, but they should go the Republique route.

Working together on something that respects the games they love might open the door to working with Konami on something in the future.

The idea that a team, out of nowhere, can just work on a remake to the game that started one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time is ... insane.

You could say the only thing more tiring at this point than people complaining about Snake's voice change is the people complaining about people complaining about Snake's voice change.

I asked Konami to shut it down because of slander.

Why would he go the fan project route? The amount of work and industry support he had, he could've made a pitch to Konami themselves and get their backing so they could sell it.

Please tell me Konami only shut this down because they bought this team up and now make it an official remake.

:*(

Again, I'm sure he was passionate, but it's barely a game or a trailer (like the RE2 fan remake from a couple of months ago). Way too early, but they blow their load immediately to something that's barely a concept.

One advice, keep it in the oven until it's close to being ready. Do a vertical slice demo or a fake game footage trailer that actually looks like a real game or something. Don't just show really rough concept art and some flat environments with boxes and no characters.

Releasing a Trailer with Hayter is pretty much the kiss of death that is more than likely why Konami shut them down. :/

And ye it's dead, it's been in the air for a few months we just couldn't speak publicly about it as we didn't wanna upset Konami. Just had the call a couple of hours ago that we can't go ahead, basically they couldn't all agree on the project with some in favour and others against it, said that probably too many people at Konami knew about it and cause they couldn't make a decision they just shut it down.

With that said, I've been invited to Konami to meet the team, also said that if we have any other idea's for other games he'd love to help us out as much as he can an hopefully put it Konami (to publish it - I'm guessing?).

That had already been put forward from Konami UK, Japan just wouldn't bite.

Sounds like a series of misunderstandings and bad communication, and they just started the work before a definitive permission was given. Can't see Konami as bad guys here.

I really respect the work that some fans are willing to invest in this type of project. But we all know that in 99,99% of cases, they are never completed. Not only because of legal issues but (mostly) because of the loss of interest by the creators.

How's that official Chrono Trigger remake coming along?

;)

well, yeah i was half serious there but kojima has been climbing the fence numerous times about remaking metal gear 1 & 2. did square even say anything about remaking chronos trigger? also did they ever make a u-turn on their decision about letting a fan create their own game?
