Metal Gear Solid 3. 10 Years. Does it have to be one or the other - love or hate?

Still my favourite and the one game in the series I've been replaying regularly since it came out.
Fond memories of getting the game early, only for my second PS2 to crap out and die mid way through the opening (many) cutscenes and scratch the disc. Broke the PS2 apart in a rushed fury, removed the disc and had it repaired in town whilst I bought a new console. The guy was in disbelief how I'd scratched a game to buggery before it was even out. It was worth it.

MGS2 was FAR more thought-provoking. In some aspect, all of those philosophical propositions concerning technological determinism have become an observable reality in the past 13 years since its release.

Fury was awesome too.
And of course volgin and the boss.

Only pain and fear were kinda lame.

Shagohod is a pretty dumb boss. It's kind of repetitive and goes on for too long.

The Fear is actually kind of cool in how much is actually going on in that fight. The stamina balance, the poison mechanic, the traps, how he has to hunt and how you can distract him with food. It's a really neat concept, the whole "getting stalked by an invisible predator" thing. It just feels half-baked because of how easy the fight is by simply equipping thermal goggles and hosing him with automatic weapons.

Best game in the series. I hope TPP manages to capture what made Snake Eater so good.
You just never know with Kojima, he gets... carried away.

Great game but I miss the back-tracking of the series. It's too lineal in that aspect. Story is great but that gameplay aspect didn't like it at all.

I don't see that happening without Hayter I'm afraid. Some welcome the change, I definitely do not.

MGS3 wasn't great because of him, but it was greater because of him.

I only played it trought once, and it was back in the days when it was released.

But that experience, THAT experience... , holyshit..

Those feelings <3
Masterpiece.

Best game in the series and one of the best games ever.

I'm not sure if I've missed something or not, but is Snake's name supposed to be John or Jack? I've never figured out definitively why Boss calls him Jack but he says its John to Ocelot, or is that him maintaining his cover or something.

Jack is a sort of nickname/non-formal version of John. Like Danny to Daniel, Dick to Richard, or Bart to Bartholomew. His birth name is John but the Boss knows him as Jack, probably to indicate closeness.

It doesn't really work that way in English, to be honest. I imagine it was Kojima trying to create an equivalent to the Japanese "Formal last name friendly first name" thing. In English if you go by Jack you typically just call yourself Jack.

I thought it was okay. I can see why people love it for the story because they probably played it when they were 15 and thought it was the coolest shit. It's just too hokey for me, having played it for the first time a year ago. This applies to all of them since I only ever played them for the first time recently.

Also I don't like how it controls. Probably never will. It's partly too stiff and partly just not super responsive in a way I want. If I want a good stealth game I'll play Thief or Dishonored.

But then it's not really a stealth game but a boss rush game with a story? The End and The Boss were cool but I didn't really care for the others.

edit: I still think MGS1 has the best "bosses" due to how simple its controls are minus Liquid who is complete garbage to fight. I just found the Fury, Fear, Pain, and Volgin just not super fun. Also MGS2 had the same control problems that 3 had without the camo menu shit.

Rising is the best Metal Gear game.

Yup, pretty much this. MGS3 is a great game, but not the best MGS for me.

nonsense. 2 rivals 3 in terms of greatness.

2 is a festering pile of dogshit with some of the worst dialog in a videogame of all time. Not that any of the games in the series had great dialog to begin with. But none of them had as bad dialog as there was between Raiden and Rose. You can't even save the game without get a load of long and pointless drivel from Rose.

One of the few games where I will not accept people calling it bad. It's one thing to dislike it but you can't call this masterpiece bad. Same opinion for RE4. You can dislike it but you cannot argue its profound impact on its genre and the industry as a whole.

This game is amazing in almost every aspect. The snake eater theme is amazing, the mechanics, and the boss battles. I also loved the survival mechanic. What an amazing game. All other opinions are wrong :P.One of the best games of my childhood.

I can't wait for MGSV. Kojima will deliver once again.

Definite GOTG for me. Hard to believe how different my life was back when I first played this a decade ago. Especially those of us that had the patience to play through the original Snake Eater version that did not have a 360 degree camera. Nearly every encounter in the game was made much more nerve racking by constantly having to reassess from cover in First person mode. But that really added to the tension since there was no handy Soliton Radar to keep you apprised of everyone. You had to do it all on your own.

why can't it be both?

I loved everything about it except the gameplay.

If I were to go back to it I'd probably be a lot better, but at the time all I knew was sitting in grass for 7 minutes waiting for a soldier to turn around was not fun. At some point I just shot my way through the game and it worked fine.

After watching some speedruns and playing through MGS4 I understand the systems a lot better but back then all I wanted was to go back to the simple fast gameplay of MGS1.

Likewise I'm not sure MGS2 seemed that good to me at the time but looking back it's pretty amazing.

perhaps he was distancing himself from the nickname jack due the (perceived) betrayal by the boss. or maybe she was one of the only people who called him jack?

One of my all time favourites.

Scary that'll be 10 years old next month- remember it really fondly as if it was just last generation. Best Metal Gear, shame number 4 was nowhere near as good.

I love MGS3. It is one of my favorite titles.

I would rate them as 4 > 3 > 1 > 2. I haven't played GZ, and the handheld ones are inferior to all of the main titles.

This guy has it right.

I still love MGS3 and think it's quite clever. But it ain't all that yo. MGS2 gets overlooked way too much.

MGS1 was certainly more consistent with the bosses.

And I think MGS3 was supposed to be hokey.

do we even get human bosses or tanks and stuff again?

Absolutely love this game. My favorite of the series. This was the only game to make me cry (up until TLOU).

Interesting tidbit: while I was playing The Sorrow boss section, it was raining in the game. Then all of a sudden it started raining outside my room. Looked out my window and it was pouring out. Legit freaked out. lmao

.

i don't think so. the level design and atmosphere of 3 are just way better to me. the big shell is small and boring, and worst of all, the final few hours are way too cut-scene heavy. i can see the argument of mgs2 being more insightful and thematically mature, but this is still a video game we're talking about here. and to me MGS3s stealthing and core gameplay, combined with the sheer size of the game, the atmosphere, the varied environments, etc are so much better

wait. MGS3 is hokey, but Rising is the best metal gear game? OOOOOK

Love it. The best mgs

Love or hate? I thought that was for MGS2 and 4. MGS3 is a pretty decent game. Cute story too.

Camo is ok, works fine enough. Now that healing system was unnecessary and gimmicky. Stamina system seemed useless and just there to annoy the player. All in all, still the best game with MGS on the title.

Now, the best Metal Gear game is MG2. Kojima never surpassed that.
The love or hate thing is actually a quote from metal gear solid 3.

Greatest game ever made. Nothing has surpassed it in my 25 years of gaming. I had insanely high expectations for it too and somehow, it completely obliterated them.

What a thrill
With darkness and silence through the night
What a thrill
I'm searching and I'll melt into you
What a fear in my heart
But you're so supreme!

wait. MGS3 is hokey, but Rising is the best metal gear game? OOOOOK

Kojima's games straddle this weird line where they want you to take it seriously at times but then are just super silly at others and the weird dichotomy doesn't work for me.

Rising just doesn't seem to give a shit and Armstrong is great.

I love Hayter's campy eating reactions.

"That was DAYUMN GOOD!"
"I'm gonna puke."
"Mmmm, DELICIOUS!"
"THIS IS SO HORRIBLE!"

I hated it the first time I tried it. Jungle setting? In MGS 1 and 2 you were in cool techno buildings sneakin' and shit. Hated it so much.

Then I came back a year later and tried it. Everyone's right. It's one of the best games ever made.

MGS2 doesn't tell its story in the best way for a game, but it tells the best story in gaming. And in some cases this is reflected in the gameplay. MGS3 is an excellent take on sixties spy thriller. But MGS2 offers something way more important and relevant. MGS3 is a silly distraction by comparison.

MGS2 has some great ideas going on. But they were executed very badly and the game is crap because of that. I went to play MGS2 very excited to see all that stuff only to find the blandest game for like 90% of the time, then at the end they throw all the mumbo jumbo at you. If they would have taken the time to balance the content out (and make a better game too), it could have been great.

The love or hate thing is actually a quote from metal gear solid 3.

Oh, I didn't realise that. Thanks.

The thing that sets mgs1 and 3 the Better games is that they just feel finished. You can really tell that the scope of mgs 2 and 4 was just too ambitious, they ran out of time and stuff had to be trimmed out. Oh wells. All 4 games are great in my opinion.

MGS2 had some excellent ideas going on. And in a lot of areas they executed those ideas cleverly and with fortitude. That meant annoying a lot of the fanbase. You were supposed to be disappointed with the pacing, the tone and the gameplay in general because the game wanted you to also be annoyed at being deceived. The game is about deceit and how much easier it is to be deceived thanks to new technology and the digital age.

The game went for something a lot higher than fun or entertainment. It went for the thought-provoking with a bit of emotion along the way.

Didn't like the camo stuff, I mean the idea is cool but the way it was set up having to go into the menu was kinda annoying.

I liked the game though, only got round to playing it (and 2) last year on the HD collections.
Snake Eater was definitely the better game.

I'm actually about to play through MGS3 for the first time ever, HD remaster on Vita. Played MGS since I was about 8 years old, never did get around to playing 3, though I've played all the others but Peace Walker. Thread has me hyped to play it!
