Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes gameplay demo

Nah. Chaos Theory did it better.

It's only superior in cutscenes.

while I agree Sams method is a more ninja like, Sam would also stop in mid animation with foot in the air if you stop pressing the direction, good once moving, but very separated, MGS4 better, what your defining as better has more to do with the mo-catching actor the the tech.
but you right Sam is more animated.

With MGS4 Kojima couldn't make up his mind if the game wants to be 60fps or 30fps.

Which is why we have some cutscenes in 60fps and 30fps.

And of course, turn on your nightvision for near 60fps goodness.

IQ has more to do with post-processing than just resolution. The reason why I really like the IQ in MGS4 is because it retains a really "clean" look most of the time, especially in the cutscenes. It makes the contrast stand out better, and the details are better defined. Of course it also means a lot of the other shortcomings are also more obvious, like the shit in-game textures and so on.
MGS4 has a odd resolution thou doesn't it, its like a 4.3 HD resolution if anything?

Well then... I really don't have a clue whatsoever then...

Big Boss looks far to old (at least when he looks at the camera and says "Kept you waiting, huh?") for the game to take place just five years after PW...

I think in the trailer we see two timelines. Look at the orange flashes, the first is when Galvez gets in the helicopter, the second is when Big Boss puts out his map device thingy. The last is in the extended trailer where Snake gets in the heli.

or there is just one big flash when XOF patches get thrown out of the heli.

I keep repeating myself but imo there is a "FOX" Snake (old) and a "XOF" Snake (young). I think it's the same guy (Big Boss).

Also "Two Phantoms were born".

I still wish Rising had the same story as rumored at the start (Raiden rescuing Sunny) :(

Nope, just for the incompetent ones you posted. I think some sites gave MGS 4 a fair review. EuroGamer, Kikizo, EDGE. The majority of publications though, got caught in the hype.

This is simply not true. I have no idea what you're talking about. I'll give you that the transition between cutscene and gameplay is very well done, but the animation quality is absolutely not the same.

I was talking for eg about this section - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0caTpKkrDw&feature=player_detailpage#t=550s

After she says " we have a real live legendary hero with us" and it seamless transitions from that cutscene to gameplay with some of the most magnificent camera work I have seen. The FROG squad jump animations during the cutscene and afterwards is awesome. I am not getting a video yet on Youtbe where they focus on the enemies for some time. Its little things like this which make it amazing. Also MGS4 has the best camera work in any game this gen save probably for GOW3's opening.

Mhhhh, then it makes sense, we get to play both the past, the present and perhaps the downfall of Outer Heaven?

It's set a few years after Metal Gear Solid 4 and references events in that game, so it seems so yes.
I realise that, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's canon.

This is what Kojima said last year:

We’ve only said that the period setting is several years after MGS4. Metal Gear Rising is not part of the Metal Gear Solid series. At present, we can’t say more than this.

I'm personally hoping it isn't canon.

Same. MGS4 has fantastic visuals.
I agree with this. There are some moments in MGS4 where I just straight up say "This is the best looking game this generation". Not necessarily because of the technical parts, but because of how fucking beautiful it is. I'm thinking the final battle, Shadow Moses and parts of act 2.

I agree that this is far more interesting to discuss than which game has the best graphics.

1) I think it's a lot more than 5 years after PW. Look at the boss, he definetly looks older. Also Miller was an instructor for FOXHOUND Operatives... so there's a chance we are looking a one of Big Boss's final missions before the uprising in 1994. I don't know but the blackhawk helicopters give me that 90's vibe... late 80's at the most..
2) I don't think that's Chico. Truth be told, I think that the dialog between Kaz and Boss is taken from somewhere else... Did Kojima confirm it was Chico during his presentation in PAX? Anyone knows? The kid's blue eyes, and the fact that he is called a soldier make me think of Raiden..

1) Big Boss is 39 during Peace Walker and its not that rare to see a man that aged in his 44-45. GZ is a prologue to MGS5 so i dont think that its one of his final missions before the OH Uprising.
2) Its Chico, when Snake puts out his map gadget, Kaz says that Chico and Paz are in the prison.

but thinking about From "FOX", Two Phantoms were born".

That could also mean Solid and Liquid Snake.

I did a little research and there are Snakes called "Phantom".

maybe we will witness the birth of The Twin Snakes.

Oh God the Final Battle looked so good. Same reaction!

Yes, Shadow Moses was indeed impressive. This looks to be very impressive also.
The man knows PS3 hardware in and out so no worries. Also, 360 will benefit greatly when its PS3 to 360. Like others have mentioned there are parts I'm sure will be scaled a bit but hardly noticeable.

I must add that river scene in Europe. The sheer amount of stuff displayed there was insane.

I've re-uploaded the best trailer of all time on youtube, before it it was avaiable only in 240p. Anyone has HD version of this? Even this quality doesn't give the game justice.

I still find it hard to believe that aged so much. And perhaps the dialog between Kaz and Big Boss is taken from somewhere else, look at the trailers from the previous games, and we can admit that Kojima has a way of playing with us.... (I'm looking at you Metal Gear Solid 4 trailers)

I don't think we will get to play with both Solid Snake and Big Boss, if that's the case, it would be great, but I doubt it... unless, we are facing a Metal Gear Remake (sort of)...

Perhaps we do get to play as some of the various operatives that integrated the FOXHOUND Unit that Big Boss created. Kojima did say he would like to make a game about The Cobra Unit in WW2, so why not a game about FOXHOUND Unit in the 80's?

That whole cutscene (all 40 minutes of it) was just mindblowing.

I think that by Phantom they mean Zero and Big Boss, how they started together (and with Boss and other members) but they took 2 different ways and one created MSF and the other Cipher.
One source (FOX) with two outcomes MSF + Cipher.

I don't think that either. I meant, maybe we will see the birth of Solid and Liquid.

That would be freaking cool.

My dislike for MGS 4 is not based on my criticisms of the technology being used in it. I've detailed them a lot in my few years here. It has everything to do with the gameplay and the storyline. The visuals are not a deal breaker in this case.
The reason why I'm talking about MGS 4's visuals is because of how impressive GZ is.

That would have been fine with me, problem is you've spent a few post arguing about the visuals.

Makes sense, didn't thought of it that way... Was Cipher ever mentioned in the Metal Gear lore before? I don't recall hearing about it before PW.

Also I have to admit that the soldiers design and Snakes sneaking outfit do match exactly with PW desgins

Yeah this. I see it as more of a 'larger areas with multiple ways to achieve your objective' thing, a bit like the Hitman games, rather than a full-blown GTA. More of an extension of the first two acts in MGS4.

Which is great IMO, since I don't really feel that a full-blown open world game would suit Metal Gear very well anyway.

It's not going to be GTA open world, obviously.
I think what they mean is every level in the game is going to be a single, large, persistent area, which is not split into several smaller and mostly independent locations.

I'd hope this also affects AI, that guards in the next room are not completely unaware of the fact you triggered an alarm. I'd hope all guards in a map would come after you if you piss them off, or that you can kill every single one of them and run around freely. A more "sandbox approach", kinda like the good old Project Igi (can't think of anything else atm) but still not open world in a just cause 2 way, that wouldn't even suit the game imho.

I'm still a bit unsure of how would calling a helicopter not alert all guards in the area but anyway.

I must add that river scene in Europe. The sheer amount of stuff displayed there was insane.

yeah, well, that's why that particular scene was prerendered and not realtime though.

Cipher was never mentioned before. There are some things that to us as players seem important, like the Boss, but Solid Snake learns about the Boss in MGS4 (how could he knew, they created her in MGS3! :) ).
I guess that Zero came up with the alias Cipher in order to cover The Patriots.

I'm not want to sound lamer but MSG 4 runs good only during the stealth mechanics... during the alert sequence the game hardly kept 30 fps... honestly I don't found MGS 4 tech wise that great job on the ps3... finger crossed for the new fox engine...

I'm interested, what don't you like about it?

Pretty sure Rising is going to be canon anyway though, it's covering all the Solidus/child soldier Raiden stuff isn't it?

I believe it is.
Honestly everything presented thus far can easily be considered canon.
I think what's throwing people off is the crazy gameplay.

If this title is going to be released on current gen then I hope we see some sort of reward or option at the start of the game for having either or all of MGS2, SE, PW and MGS4 saves on our consoles.

I keep repeating myself but imo there is a "FOX" Snake (old) and a "XOF" Snake (young). I think it's the same guy (Big Boss).

Young one has the MSF logo on his camo. So yeah, it's probably shortly after he (Big Boss) left FOX, while the old version is later and he supposedly rejoined (sounds like it from what the guy on the radio said in the gameplay demo).

No, there is certainly a subjective aspect of it but there is also an objective aspect too. Here's an informative read on objectivity and subjectivity I found.
Yeah, I spent a lot of graduate school researching these ideas. That article is a silly philosophical writer's blog on subjectivity and objectivity. Really boring, and really needs to be edited down a shit ton.

"The statement "Vanilla ice cream tastes better than chocolate ice cream" might also be epistemologically objective. As noted above, people are public beings in a public world. If everyone who ate chocolate ice cream declared sincerely that it tasted awful, and vanilla ice cream tasted better, then metaphysically objective data would be available, and the statement "Vanilla ice cream tastes better than chocolate ice cream" would no longer be a matter of opinion, but a matter of fact. (It would become comparable to "Vanilla ice cream tastes better than Drano"; the ordinary response to the latter would be "Well, of course" — not "Well, that's YOUR opinion".)"

I mean, that's a terrible argument for "objective" taste.

"But think of it this way. Suppose someone says "I think store-bought tomatoes taste better than home-grown tomatoes." Now, anyone who's eaten home-grown tomatoes would be incredulous: how could anyone with experience of both decide the store-bought tomatoes taste better? As a tomato grower, my first impulse would be to wonder if the speaker simply didn't understand which tomato was which; I would want to bring the speaker one of my home-grown tomatoes and ask again! Which is better? It's just obvious if you've experienced both. Something like that may be true for works of art as well. Maybe people who think Austin Powers is an excellent film simply have no idea what a good film is, and they'll change their minds gradually as they acquire more experience of life and art. All I'm proposing is that with aesthetic judgments, some people have relevant expertise."

Again, what the fuck? Is this article serious? All he's saying, in way too many words, is that if enough people have agreeable taste, then the taste becomes a sort of objective state. Also, your qualifications raise up your taste to a higher level than others. Dumb. Ignore this and read Pierre Bourdieu's Distinction or something. His work even explains this article's existence.

Nah, they both have both patches, there was some speculation 'young' Big Boss had the XOF patch, but that's not the case.
