Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes gameplay demo

He is more shackled by his fans. If he didn't have his hands in each and every project the franchise would go to shit. Seeing as its his lifes work, it can't leave it alone now.

Which is a shame because Im ready for MGS to end any day and Im super excited for GZ, but the idea of Kojima starting a brand new franchise is a lot more enticing for me. Hell even ZOE3 will get me more pumped.

I'm just saying he doesn't need to make these games. He wants to make these games. He's as "shackled" to them as Cliffy B is shackled to Gears of War or something.

There are people like Kojima who want to keep making games within his first big IP, and keep on making and perfecting them, and then there are people like Jaffe who move from IP to IP. Neither are wrong, just different.

Ya, I think though he is enjoying it more now than he previously was. I think working on MGS3 and 2, and then MGS4 left him sour. Now with PW and GZ and working closer into the Snake Origin era he feels better with the series.

SEGA is doing such an amazing job bringing their classics as DD titles I wonder what is stopping Kojima putting Snatcher and Policenauts on the services :( I would love to play em on PSN.

They just made an HD Collection for 3 systems, and are now doing a Zoe HD collection. One thing at a time. We can hope.

Yeah, he seemed super excited about GZ at PAX. He's been hyping the hell out of it, and it's delivered so far. I really do think the whole PS3 specs thing soured him on MGS 4, along with a lot of other factors. Funny that ecen with him soured, we got a pretty great game from it.

It seems the Rising disaster has crushed any hopes he had of handing over the series to his staff.

He definitely appears more passionate about it now, openly discussing the possible premise for another main entry (the Boss as the lead) even, which is something he hasn't really done before.

(I really feel like hugging his staff, thanks to them MGS won't go to shit and we get an MGS action game made by Platinum)

Remembering back to the first time I saw Johnny take of his mask at the end of Act 3, I was really taken aback. The first thought in my mind was definitely "holy shit, another clone?!".

The reason for him not being effected by SOP being shut down also hadn't been revealed yet so that boosted my holy shit.

The Genome soliders were clones.

Not really, they went through gene therapy iirc.

It's a shame, but we'll get at least two awesome games from it in Ground Zero and MGR.

I gotta be honest here. I'm pretty fucking lost when it comes to the MGS story pre Shadow Moses. I need to replay MGS3 because I don't remember squat about it.

as long as you remember this, you're fine.

I honestly think Kojima is inspired by gameplay ideas not story. I don't think he start making mgs 3 because he want to tell big boss story, but rather he had gameplay ideas about stealth in jungles, with camo etc. it just happen to fit a big boss story than solid snake. and it really shows in his games, he may get stuck making mgs games, but all his mgs games are all pretty unique, much more different between titles than you'd expect from other series.

this is one reason I don't mind if he keep making mgs games as long as he kept the gameplay fresh. and he always did. besides, a new ip from kojima will only be worth it if it's radical change in setting or genre. like action sci fi zone of enders. because if he made a new ip and it end up to be a military stealth game, then he might as well call that game metal gear something.

Kojima wanted to be a movie director. I think he cares about story and gameplay equally. They both drive the other. That isn't to say he hasn't written himself into a corner.

Really? See I've always been under the impression that Kojima really loves making these grandiose stories and character arcs. I mean, he could have moved on to a different IP, or even changed up characters, especially since there was an opportunity to do so with this newest game, but he really enjoys this universe he's created.

EDIT: I agree with injurai that he enjoys both fairly equally. He's always seemed to really love the story of MG(S) though, and that's why I think he comes back.

it's known that he never plan any mgs story beyond what he's working on at the time. he didn't make mgs 2 with nanomachines as the answer for everything, and I don't think he makes mgs 3 knowing zero is gonna be the one making patriot ai in mgs 4 or paramedic as the one who made gray fox.

many people accuse him for retcon etc, but I don't think he cares really. he make stuff up for new story while trying his best to make it fit into the timeline and lore of previous mgs games, even if he had to retcon or stretch the facts to make it work. at worst, all the plothole or inconsistencies all fall into the 'plausible but not explained category' and not a straight contradiction.

ocelot's arm for example, mgs4 said it's all hypnotheraphy, but just because the game said that, it didn't really contradict mgs2 possession scene because it is plausible that ocelot is truly possessed in mgs 2 than later remove liquid's arm and switch to hypnotherapy offscreen in mgs4.

edit: although I admit his commitment to the story is more than you'd expect from people who I claimed 'don't care'. I think Kojima is really committed to everything he does, so even if he never plan any mgs story arc ahead, he still did his best on what he had and the result is amazing, and he has talent in directing/editing and camerawork too. that cutscene from the demo is really a compelling scene to watch.

It's possible that he's really into the stories. And I think he's probably pretty excited by the new design possibilities that the Fox Engine allows in Ground Zeroes.

I just remember the Kojima that successively promised that MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4 would each be the last Metal Gear games he would work on. And I remember an interview he gave with OPM where he talked about how he saw games as a service or a tool (like a chair) more than as a piece of art, and his job was to make players happy with his games. He's always very aware of fan expectations, and you can see how he responded to the negative reaction to playing as Raiden in MGS2 by making him into a joke in 3, and then radically transforming the character in 4.

I'd like to think that he has enough power that nobody at Konami is forcing him to do anything. But since he apparently doesn't trust his staff to make a Metal Gear game without him, and since fans keep demanding the titles, he'll keep working on them.

I'm sure he's enjoying it at this point, but as long as he's working on the franchise, he can't make something outside of the military espionage genre, and I'd like to see him try something new again.

Well part of the Fox Engine project is to enable them to be able to make games at a quicker pace. If they can get to the point where one team can push out a game in 2 years, I could see Kojima setting up two teams such that one works on Metal Gear and one works on other projects (ZOE3 or Snatcher 2 in my dream world).

they've had multiple teams. they were making rising while Kojima is finishing Peace Walker...

You mean his team. Time and time again he's tried to pass the mantle to his dev team but they always give him the same runaround. I don't blame the. I just think he needs a break from time to time to avoid him from making story decisions like the ones made in MGS4 and PW.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that he dodged that one as well.

Yeah, wouldn't be surprised.

I liked the idea of this character that didn't have the advantages everyone else did but just tried his absolute best to try and keep up on his own.

I know he gets lots of hate but personally I'm glad they included him in MGS4 and gave him a bigger role.

Yeah, I really liked Johnny, actually don't get the hate for him at all. He was welcome comic relief in a story full of pretty damn serious or tragic characters.

What tells you that Johnny was a genome soldier ? There were a bunch of soldiers already stationed at Shadow Moses well before the insurrection. Meryl was one of them. Is it nonsensical to think that there might have been normal soldiers at the base, and that Johnny was one of them ?

11 years after MGS2, the rain still doesn't bounce off the objects as it did in the first chapter of MGS2.

Damn PS2 was a particle effects monster!

They never actually did bounce. It was just a "halo" of raindrop sprites they placed on top of each object. They were independent of the sheet rain that fell on the environment.

Meryl was a one-off surprise transfer. The Colonel explains why she was there and emphasises the rest are all Genome. Jonny was present in the first game. You stole his clothes.

She pretended to be one of them, it wasn't like she was given the option to join and did.

He's got that Snake swag after he stops shitting his pants. Dumb guy who doesn't have a clue what's going on and gets the girl in the end. MGS 2 Snake is the exception to the rule.
