Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes gameplay demo

Impressive.

Wish it had a tad more gameplay but I have faith.

Wish this was a PS4 launch title though. I will cross my fingers for a delay.

Haha, what? These are video games people. Just play it with an open mind. If you dislike it, well then, you dislike it. Not a big deal.

As someone who waited hours for my copy of the original MGS on launch day, I really liked Twin Snakes.

Maybe even if you dislike it, then you'll find out even more why you love the games made by Kojima in the first place, or some areas where they're not so hot. I mean, you can find a Gamecube and this online likely for super-cheap these days. I say there's nothing to lose.

I love you, here's some of that "Awesome Love"

Besides the Liquid one, those are fucking rad. I'm never going to let a few slo-mo cutscenes (which aren't even inherently bad; people think anything slow-mo is bad no matter what) stop me from loving a game. It's still an awesome game.

Really? Come on you should really give it a shot, you're doing yourself disfavor by avoiding it just because Kojima wasn't completely involved.

I say that more tongue and cheek. I just don't feel like buying a GC and TS just to play when I'd rather get the HD Collection for my PS3.

Awww yeaaaaah! I can see why people might not like some of the crazier stuff Snake does in Twin Snakes, but I defy anyone not to love the Ninja stuff.

I like the idea of playing that Snake/BB show down from BB's perspective as a great way to tie up the whole Big Boss/LET saga.

I want more Metal Gear, but I'd love them to completely write off everything so far and start fresh. If Kojima is ever serious about doing new games, he's going to have to hand Metal Gear off to others, and they should be able to start with a blank slate.

Yeah, this would be seriously fantastic, and the perfect way to cap off the saga. I agree with wanting them to draw a line under the current storyline, MGS4 already wraps things up perfectly, and they can't just keep send Big Boss on random adventures forever.

I've never played TS and I never will because i'm a Kojima purist.

also @plastic-man your are making a ton of assumpion about the snak/bb/snake/bb cycle. I think they just make what they want to. I do agree that GZ on PC is a slim chance though.

And Kojima used his judgement of Kitamura's known previous works enough to select him, he didn't make some OOPS MISTAKE.

So if to be a Kojima Purist means to like what he likes to put in his games, then you better start liking The Twin Snake's cutscenes, bromango.

Also, Gamecube hadyou play hand twister to bring down your aimed weapon, reason enough to buy it: for the challenge.

I think gaf has discovered a new perpetual argument surround mgs, being MGS1 vs Twin Snakes. If the MGS4 debates weren't heated enough.

This debate is always silly. The original is objectively a more challenging game, and by default the more original of the two.

The question is (and I've seen heated arguments about this), WHICH ONE IS CANON, TTS OR THE ORIGINAL? Some people say that Kojima said TTS is canon.

- MGS2 features Snake dodging Olga's bullet slightly in Matrix time, and MGS3 is riddled with crazy stunts like Eva backflipping off of Ocelot's face, so there's no real contradiction with Twin Snake's crazy matrix stunts and the rest of the series.

- Also, Naomi loses her English accent in Twin Snakes. When you get to MGS4, she doesn't have her accent either.

- Every official flashback of Shadow Moses in the series, especially MGS2, uses footage and screenshots of the original PS1 game. MGS4 EVEN HAS YOU PLAYING THROUGH THE ORIGINAL MGS!

The original MGS is canon. TTS is the legend of what happened.

I didn't play TTS till just after 3, I picked up a Cube and the game pretty cheap.

While I'm sure technically you need a Cube or Wii, Dolphin is always an option.

As for the canon, they are the same story. The digital novel on PSP is actually considered to be the definitive version of the story. But as which is more 'official', it's MGS1. The Kojima directed games are the 'real' ones.

I want to ship you a GC and TS just to show you how cool it is.

I would totally ship it back too. I might actually be able to borrow a friends GC. Maybe gamestop would have TS for cheap.

Ya, my machine should be able to handle dolphin.

I liked the over the top cutscenes in the Twin Snakes. I greatly prefer the original, but the Twin Snakes is still pretty good. My only really negatives are the changes in the dialogue are generally worse than the original. Also the music in the some of the scenes just wasn't as good (Sniper Wolf) as in the original killing some of the impact. Still, it was pretty good.

edit: oh, and the gamecube controller kind of sucked for the game

Does it really matter which is "canon" in all honesty? I mean don't they both have the exact same story and characters in them, unless I'm missing something.

I guess it comes down to whether you want Azure Dreams, Suikoden, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Vandal Hearts or Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Eternal Darkness to exist in the Metal Gear universe. The choice is yours. Choose wisely!

Call them up, I just saw an ad on their site for GC games. Buy 2 get 2. So buy Twin Snakes and some other GC classic, then get two more. We all win!

Canon as a whole is very loose in Metal Gear. Ultimately, you can choose to let Meryl die in that game, you can completely break the fiction at a whim.

I'm really curious just how open is this open world. The fact you can drive a variety of vehicles and abort mission to go to other locales is such a departure from the series. Well as long as I can still play to the end without killing a single person I will be happy.

I expect it to be as open as Assassin's Creed games (you know Kojima is fan of the series) , but not as open as GTA games. You remember riding a horse to get from town to town in AC? Well I can it is a "linear" open world. You have a specific road to follow to reach your place, but still it is big unlike GTA games where you can wander and reach a point from any road or street.

I wasn't happy about TTS until a couple years later I found out it was directed by the guy behind Versus which is one of my all time favourite films. Still waiting for the sequel.

I don't think it's open world at all. I think he just means the levels are large and don't have loading screens.

For example, that base would be a single mission, maybe it takes an hour or so, but I can't see it being on a huge island that's fully open or anything.

He says during the PAX panel that because you can see all the base, it's open world. That's not generally what people seem to consider open world.

I think it'll essentially be like MGS4, but each act would be a single, open environment with no loading.

Since before the announcement, a few people on here, myself included, have used Crysis as a touch stone, I'm more confident of that after hearing the panel than ever.

In a franchise where "death" almost never means death, they can play as fast and loose with the canon as they want.

Remember this scene?

Still the most jarring moment of the game for me. At the end of Act 4, Raiden has this big heroic death scene, and straight up dies.

Start of Act 5 Otacon's all like "Raiden's fine, Snake, he's just resting up."

I don't want it to be "open world" in the classic sense anyway.

Can someone please do me a huge favor and sum up this 43 page thread?

The steps aren't necessarily summaries of each page (each step may take place over multiple pages), just so you know, just the general direction the thread has gone.

First: Wow, this looks great. Is it for the next generation of this generation?
Second: Any idea who is the boy? Is it young Raiden? Is it Solid Snake?
Third: The boy is Chico.
Fourth: It doesn't look like Chico. I think it's young Raiden.
Fifth: No, it is Chico.
Sixth: Maybe it's Solid Snake as a child?
Seventh: No, it is Chico.
Eight: So who is the guy with Scars?
Ninth: It's Zero?
Tenth: It seems to be Zadornov (most likely) or Coldman.
Eleventh: Is the boy Chico?
Twelfth: Maybe there is two protagonists?
Thirteenth: Are the orange flashes a gap in time?
*Eventual Descent into Madness*
sarcasm of course, only referring to how this is what most MGS threads that I've read seem to turn into eventually
-List wars
-MGS rankings
-Discussing what makes MGS4 good/bad
-Discussing if MGS2 is good/bad
-If Twin Snakes is good.
Fourteenth: I wonder if it's a next generation game?
Fifteenth: Kojima said it's on a PC based on current console specifications.
Sixteenth: Dual Protagonists? Jumps in time?
Seventeenth: Twin Snakes discussion.
EDIT: There was also a few people mentioning that there was a lot of complaining that most of it was just a cutscene (before the extended one) and there was, of course, Sunhi's gifs of the game.
EDIT 2: And of course there was injurai's amazing game concept "Metal Gear Sunny" where we play as Sunny, trying to restore order to breakfast.

Of course, that's just a general way the discussion has gone to my memory, I'm sure I'm overlooking quite a lot. There was a lot of sparsed amazement, questions, doubts and discussion that was occuring in the thread so it's only the repetitive questions that are continually asked that I can remember (which is why I've repeated the Chico suspicion so many times, simply because that is something that stands out as being asked a lot).

EDIT: Ein Bear, I completely agree. That "death" was just completely bizarre with the knowledge that he's around in Act 5. It seemed completely unneccessary and, to me, appeared to be blatant emotional manipulation without much reason. All of its impact is lost when he appears in Act 5 and the "death" almost ignored. I really hope Ghost Zeroes, if it goes for scenes with an emotional impact, tries to avoid doing such cop-outs. They may have an impact immediately while you're fooled, but when the truth is revealed it just negates the initial impact.

Is that 土師孝也 I hear? Great choice if it is.

Has Scarface got the same voice as Kakuzu from Naruto?

Meant to respond to this days ago...but this thread moves so fast.

Yep. Scarface is voiced by Takaya Hashi, who voices Kakuzu in Naruto. He's one of the few voice actors from the show I don't instantly recognize! Scareface feels like he's going to be a condescending s.o.b.....perfect voice for the job.

And also there is no real big villain in the entire series (maybe only Volgin), because everyone expresses his reasons behind all his deeds to achieve teh "PEACE", their methods vary and can look insane (just like the Pain/Nagato explanation and intentions).

I felt like Twin Snakes proved that there's a method to Kojima's madness. His direction and style had so much charm compared to Twin Snakes which just felt overproduced but lacked personality.
Sniper Wolf's death scene for example with the bland, non-memorable music and the Northern Lights and shit was so awful and completely defeated the purpose of trying to emulate a cold, desolate, but peaceful atmosphere that she wanted to die in
. Whereas Kojima totally nailed the atmosphere with sublime direction and the music was tremendously superior in the original.

Twin Snakes fucked that up hard and I could say that about nearly every scene.

I knew it was Kakuzu the second I heard it. :)

I would play the fuck out of a HDified Twin Snakes on Dolphin. It would be like the HD remaster of TS we all deserved for the HD collection.

Does Dolphin run under Mac? I wonder how my new Macbook Air would handle it?

Well Raiden is mostly machine (Ghost in the Shell style) and that body of his is highly adaptable and versatile (look at what happened when Vamp stuck knives into it in the second fight). So unless his head/spine get crushed completely I don't see him going down easily.

Losing the second arm was their way of showing damage after that ship encounter.

I'm going to need a metal gear avatar after this thread...

also my average posts per day have surpassed 10 because of this. Dat hype.
