Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes gameplay demo

ibbWMTYWVykj2D.gif

We stealth drivin' now.

So when will this release do you think?
Assuming nextgen will be announced in May/June, there is a small window as to when this can conceivably come out this gen, right? KojiPro can perhaps release on current gen to take advantage of the install bases and an HD+ nextgen version in Fall'13.

Does anyone have a link where I can download (rather than stream) a 720p/1080p video? All the ones I've seen so far are behind a paywall.

THANKS!

Big Boss
was one of the founding members of the Patriots. He had a falling-out with Zero sometime during the 70s or 80s due to disagreements about the purpose and ultimate goal of the Patriots.

That sounds more like it, thanks.

Major Z's face is unburnt at the end of MGS4

While true, I wouldn't put it past Kojima to back-pedal and change things like this.
Also, considering they pretty much reassembled Big Bosses body in MGS4, I'm sure they could've given Zero another face during his lifetime. I never finished PW though actually; could this villain be anyone else from that game? I suspect the boy at the start could be (a skinnier) Chico at least. Is it Miller taking to Big Boss over the radio?

Looks good. Wasn't too impressed because we've seen better. Kinda stinks that it suffers from the ol' shiny plasticine too :(

Jesus Christ. Best animation this gen, bar none.

Uncharted 3 is right up there with regards to context sensitive animations. Things can only get better over time. What we saw today is still very early in development. For example, the animation for retrieving the silenced assault rifle was missing. The animation system seems to based on MGS4 which is a good start.

Btw it looks like the bottom obscured picture is actually BB all lit up with the NV goggles as portrayed in the second image.

At 1080p with that kind of AA? That overall image quality? That framerate? Not possible on current generation consoles.

With that liberal use of DOF, assets/quality scaled down a little to be more suited to processing power of current generation systems? Quite possible.

Most of the video is cinematic, and KojiPro always go the out of their way to boost asset quality for scripted cinema. DOF is the first call to arms for any developer looking to obscure distant asset quality, and it is used in abundance here.

I could be very wrong, but I don't really see how with a bit of asset and render scaling this game isn't accomplishable on current generation hardware, with the impression of relatively similar image quality scaled to 720p resolution.

A Hideo Kojima game.

Damn I just realized how much I missed it..

Can't wait for this. Great reveal. Metal Gear Solid is back!!!

Show me one thing in that video that can't be done on today's hardware.

Yes, FOX is their "next gen" engine but nothing in that video was next gen. Everyone is getting worked up because they see a new engine doing things a bit differently and immediately think its simply not possible on today's hardware.

It looks good but come on people, lets not go overboard on this.

Whore of the orient is officially Next Gen announced.

Its not "next gen" but its clearly being run on PC hardware thats beyond PS3/360 IMO. I think in between gen is the most accurate. At the very least its a PC with lot more memory than 512mb, probably around 1gb. Try to find one blurry texture or jaggy. Everything is super high rez and clean. I also noticed no tearing or framerate dips. The animation and lighting is probably possible on current gen hardware but is just a bit better than the best we've seen before. The best before being UC3 IMO.

The closest thing with textures, models, and lighting looking that good is also Uncharted 3, but its not a big expansive open environment like that. Even UC3 has quite a few spots with low rez textures here and there, not this.

I dont see a console version looking that good, certain things will probably be pared back to fit within the memory limitations of the consoles, and I'm sure they'll be some framerate and tearing. I saw Tomb Raider running on 360 at PAX and the game seemed to be running at a consistant 20-25fps, sometimes going below 20fps. I didnt play it, but it sure didnt look responsive. Game has a lot of lighting and shadow effects with a lot alpha effects like smoke going on, along with some pretty impressive textrues and models. This was the forest hunting portion of the game. I would almost go as far to say current gen consoles could barely handle it. But this MGS GZ demo looks quite a few steps above Tomb Raider.

Sounds about right. I think they've been working on it for quite a while. Edit: not sure about the nextgen version.

That looked great. Animation was seamless, overall lighting excellent, and man - have devs really nailed the wet texture effects this gen or what? :D

But I think the little details are what really made the difference here. The rim of the hat actually being moved by the raindrops was the first one I really noticed.

This is running on a PC made to console specs? Hard to believe, makes this even more impressive/spectacular.

If you believe Koji, yes.

I think it looks incredible no matter what it's on. As you said, the little touches make all the difference in creating a believable world.

Regarding if it could be anybody from Peace Walker
Nope.
If it's
Miller
talking to Big Boss, that seems likely at the moment but I'm unfamiliar with the Japanese Voice Actors. This requires further clarification. If the boy at the start is Chico, definitely.

Well..... (MGS4 spoilers)
So was Eva, but her face was fine. Some how Solid's wasn't though...

I'm going to ignore BB's appearance in 4 though as he was totally reconstructed.

Exactly, if he could be (MGS4 spoiler, vaguely)
reconstructed
, then so could Zero.

To those who are thinking there's really any Fabric physics going on, have a look at MGS4 opening cutscene. You'll see the exact effect when Otacon is speaking to Snake. You've got these effects everywhere in the game, it's just a very convincing looking canned effect.

There's really nothing in the video that can't be done on current gen hardware, a reduced rendering resolution is an expected trade off but apart from that nothing. There's flickering shadows, character models with sharp edges (next gen you'll have tessellated models everywhere).....all these things pretty much tell that it's very much current gen.

Don't see all the hullabaloo, but maybe that's me. Lots of smoke and mirrors in the cutscene, actual gameplay didn't look that impressive, either. Weird lighting aplenty and wooden animation.

Debuting a game with rainy nighttime environment is clever, though.

Best part of that gif is the light pointing up due to the guard's fall.

Kojima <3

Good eye! I hope the actual game is like that--if you don't have the patience to observe the searchlight patterns and wait for an opening, just take out the guard and the light points up when he falls to the ground.

Next step would be an alert cos the spot light is pointing to the sky...

Yea Kojima has odd sense of priorities when it comes to realism. Tosses in alot of neat little touches but leaves in so many silly things when it comes to the actual gameplay that are immersion breaking

I disagree, there's no proper foot planting in Uncharted 3 at times. This wins everything I have seen so far. I thought we hit the ceiling with Max Payne 3, but nope. Here comes Lord Kojima, ready to blow everything away.

I hate this man. I love this man.

"How does the PS3 version hold up to the PC build we're going to show?"
"What? Badly man, badly"
"You compared them?"
"Yeah, of course"
"So they're comparable, that's all I needed to know, thanks"

Exactly. Shit I'm drunk, I need to go to bed, fucking awesome MGS vids.

The cloth physics. It blew me away, and was the one thing that made the video look almost like a film at a few parts.

Just saw it for the first time right now. O.M.F.G I am supernova level hype for this ish right here! Snaaaaaaaake! You already know I'm there day 0.

I'd be more inclined to believe that the footage is representative of how the console versions would look if it wasn't a multiplat.

We all know that miracles can happen with exclusives in the final years of a console's life. Look at Shadow of the Colossus, Resident Evil 4 (okay there was a PS2 port of that one, but it was cut down significantly), God of War 2, Chronicles of Riddick, etc, from last generation. These sorts of things normally come from a developer exploiting every single trick in the book for a single piece of hardware.

Not trying to start a 'which console is more powerful than the other' debate, just saying that these sorts of technical miracles tend to only happen if you're developing for one specific hardware configuration.

Sorry if I'm late on this... the thread is moving super fast. I love Metal Gear, but I'm not 100% clued up on everything from the story. If I'm not mistaken though, didn't Big Boss and
Major Zero fall out after the Cold War? Zero and the others became The Patriots. Could the villain we're seeing in this game actually be Zero? If so... what happened to his face? I got the impression Zero would be sat away from the battle pulling the strings (as he was in MGS3.) It seems odd though, especially since the game is titled Ground Zeroes as well.

Doubt it. For one, Solidus wears an eye patch on his left eye, not his right. That would be cool, though.
FOX XOF

Kojima might be playing a game here
