Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes gameplay demo

My face seeing Snake and the non-existent transition to gameplay:

HOLY FUCKING CRAP!

Beyond is not a game as in MGS GZ. It's a tech demo with spectator mode, IMO.

MGS GZ on the other hand is a full game, with its advanced physics, animation, scale and AI.

I know dude. I just wanted to show that it is possible to crank out these graphics (or in somewhat the same ballpark) on current gen systems. I am aware MG: GZ is open world and whatnot, but it seems in line with the time we are in now with the generation allmost comming to an end. It's in times like these that games can suprise you when it comes to graphics. Kinda what happened with God of War 2 on the PS2 and dunno... FF9 on the PSX.

I don't see what is so hard to believe about these graphics being done on current gen. It looks really good but so do a lot of current gen games. I think the slick rain effects are covering up a lot of the stuff that would give away the "current gen-ness" of the graphics.

It's not so much the graphics (which I believe are still gorgeous) as the amazing cinematography and style. It's really top notch, and totally to be expected of Kojima.

The lighting alone succeeds that of current gen capabilities. At a stable framerate anyways.

So the guy with the burnt face, any ideas?

He kinda reminds me of Volgin, I mean he was burnt to a crisp which could explain the face. Most likely Zero though.

In the original MG, Big Boss was Snake's commanding officer. Snake will have had to work with him at some point.

This game is going to knock my socks off, I can't wait to play it.

I like this era of MGS games over the newer ones (MGS2/4), its just a much better setting.

Yeah, I've always felt the series (at least in storytelling) is much better when it's riffing on the past as opposed to predicting the future.

It's been FOUR years since MGS4 was released, and this game is on a whole new engine, I think the leap between the two is very realistic, not sure why everyone is doubting it tbh.

Heck, I think MGS4 still looks pretty nice too.

This guy has a nice theory. He thinks it's Ramon Galvez Mena.

MGS: Ground Zeroes trailer breakdown

I hope you enjoyed the trailer. For those that can’t speak Japanese I uploaded a English sub title version. I’m sure a number of you were a little left in the dark as for a non action trailer there was a lot of information.SO let me try to help where I can. Straight off the bat the camera followed a scared trench coat commander, who I believe is Ramon Galvez Mena. The catalyst to the Peacewalker incident, in the MGS series. We see him conversing with a captured boy – which all signs point towards the boy being Chico. Chico was a child soldier of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (SNLF), operating in Costa Rica. He has a sibling comrade Amanda Valenciano Libre, who could be the person that was tortured by the Peacewalker sentinels, forcing Chico to turn in the whereabouts of his SNLF. The walkman that was given to Chico is an interesting artifact, as it would later contain the voice of “The Boss” (MGS Snake Eater), Big Boss’s mentor. Whom upon hearing it decides to continue the mission further after saving Chico from the camp.

The name Paz is mentioned repeatedly as Galvez divulges his masterstroke plan. Paz Ortega Andrade who is a double agent, was captured infiltrating the Militaires Sans Frontiers (“MSF”). And would later become a triple agent. And go further on to try and use METAL GEAR ZEKE to her own misguided use.

Two major locations are identified in the conversation Blacksite a small communist state outside US jurisdiction and Mother Base, which was the base of operation for the MSF.

Mother Base similar to it’s predecessor BIG SHELL is located just off of the tip of the Caribbean, and where METAL GEAR ZEKE was created. The forerunner to METAL GEAR RAY.

Very simply I think it’s safe to say GROUND ZEROES will be following the 1974 MGS storyline with a few tweaks. Galvez and his misfit mob dubbed “the dogs of war” have already been identified as has Paz. The conflict will undoubtedly take place in South Africa, Costa Rica and Mother Base. The main plot will be about the creation of METAL GEAR ZEKE, which the Peace Sentinels (CIA mercenary unit formed by Hot Coldman and lead by Galvez) hope to solidify their power by turning on America and the MSF. I think their will be a strong emphasis on the conflict between the Peace Sentinels and the MSF, with Snake as always in the middle. All of this of course is supposedly a secret plot by Cipher (Zero/the Patriots) to get Big Boss to rejoin them.

In closing I think the trailer shows an interesting addition to the MGS franchise. The textures, colours and lighting using the FOX ENGINE are incredible. What I would say is it seems the Kojima likes using old snake, whether it’s in a world set in the future or the past. I wonder if this has to do with his old age. As he feels it’s easier to relate and to show that an old dog still has a bit of fight in him.

According to the established canon, it'd have to be Liquid.

If I remember MGS correctly (it's been a while), Liquid never trained under Big Boss, in fact he kinda resented him (remember, he thought he had the recessive genes and BB chose Snake over him). He also hated Snake because Snake killed BB in MG2 and denied Liquid his chance to enact his "revenge" on BB for giving him the inferior genes.

MG and MG2 are still canon in the timeline and BB was Snake's CO when Snake was in Foxhound.

Can't be
Zero
based on how he looked in MGS4.

Volgin
was the first to pop into my mind as well. Someone who knows the japanese VA might be able to confirm better.

Couple more gifs. (solid 30fps this time around) For some reason that animation on the guy giving the go to the other helicopter really impressed me.

Damnit, from that GIF, Snake's running animation still looks like a simple loop. I'll stop watching GIF now and watch the real thing.

So the guy with the burnt face, any ideas?

Zero seems the most likely, but there's no explanation for the burns. He doesn't have them in MGS4, and there's no reason to think he'd get horrifically burnt off-screen and then put back together some time later. I haven't played enough Peace Walker to recognize any villains in there, but this guy obviously has some familiarity with Big Boss and knows he'll be coming to rescue Chico.

FF IX and God of War II had the luxury of being developed for a single console, where the devs could code to the metal and pull off various tricks with the hardware (and GoW II was a first-party game by the wizards at Sony Santa Monica to boot). That wouldn't really work with a multiplat game like MGS: GZ where the game has to be developed with at least two different hardware configs in mind.

oh soooooo b-e-a-utiful

MGS4 is a damn pretty game with a lot of neat effects.

Graphics-wise, if this is strictly current gen....next-gen is going to melt my eyeballs (o_0) I still remember some Uncanny Valley the first time I saw a demo of Fight Night on 360 playing in a GameStop. That was years ago. I don't think they would do a PS3/PS4, 360/720 thing though...it will probably just be current gen or Hideo will bring us another trailer in the future with improved visuals and indicate it's for next gen only at that point. After all, it's Hideo Kojima.

No way it isn't scaled down for current gen consoles but it looks really cool. I'm glad they finally got a scalable engine they can use on both generations of consoles (and PC).

Looking back, Capcom got a headstart this gen thanks to the MT Framework, and that allowed them to release a good load of games at a sustained pace. I didn't necessarily like all the games nor do I particularly like how MT has evolved but if you compare their output since 2007 to that of any other japanese publisher, you can definitely see how it was good business for them to have an inhouse engine they mastered. I'm hoping the fox engine will be the same for Konami.

To nitpick, I'd say the rainy setting seems to be there to make the rubber look more acceptable but I'm curious to see how the game looks in a non-rainy environment.

Story wise, I'm glad they're continuing the Big Boss story, depending on the period, I'd really like to see some young Gray Fox or Solid Snake moments. It's interesting how out of hands things have gotten: I'm at a point where I view more BB as the main character of the series than SS. Then again, the game is probably just a setup to bring a Solid Snake centric MGS5.

Anyway, I expected the whole announcement to be yet another disappointment and it ends up being a bona fide megaton.

It's already confirmed to be current gen, so I doubt even Kojima would pull such a troll :lol

Man, this makes me want to pick up the MGS HD Collection and play through it, even though I own all the games in the collection already.

Fuck it! I'm going to do just that.

Most of my friends were talking today about how hideo kojima cant make good games, then i come and see this trailer. I so want to show them this trailer so they can take their words back.

This game could be a perfect setup to a remake of MG and MG2. Those games really need to be remade to tie them into MGS. This would also allow us to play as Young Snake again.

Sorry to say but your friends have pathetic taste in games. If they feel the guy who gave birth to the stealth genre, cinematic story telling and who has given us only 90+ universal acclaimed MGS titles all these years and has won a lifetime achievement award at his age does not make good games your friends need help.

The Beyond model there is much better than the MGS GZ ones.
Of course Zeroes is doing a lot more and has no chance of matching the visual fidelity, but from the gameplay demo there the only thing that's even a bit of a stretch of PS3 capability would be a stable framerate, the rest is very achievable

The lighting, draw distance, texture resolution, and overall IQ will take a huge hit when they port down
