Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes gameplay demo

I hope I won't be proven wrong, but I think it will look exactly like that on PS360, maybe w/o AA and of course 720p@30fps w/ slowdowns when there is a lot going on.

Shadows and textures are not high-res, a lot of the great look comes from the effects and the awesome lighting. A lot of it is hidden by the wet surface effects.
Combine all that with great models (like usual in MGS games) and great art direction and you get this. While looking awesome, I don't think it's any next-gen jump considering we already have titles like Uncharted etc. and getting some more (Beyond).

However, all this while being open world / having very large areas is the biggest technical jump (especially compared to MGS4) I would guess, so that kinda still makes me cautious about the end result.

I get a feeling TGS is going to be pretty cool, but E3 will be glorious.

Indeed it does. I'm having a really hard time believing this is how MGSGZ is going to look on PS3, especially having watched the HQ version.

I think it'll be fine. The geometry isn't mind blowing, (grass, for example, is simpler than even MGS3). The trick is the defferred lighting, which PS3 has been shown to be no slouch at. It may look considerably less impressive in the inevitable daylight levels. (I'd be very happy for it to be all set at night, but we've seen those Fox Engine preview pix)

I've not seen evidence of more than 2 shadowmaps being generated at one time but obviously we've not seen much yet.

I have a feeling PS3 will end up being the lead version but we will see.

I don't know.

They are developing on PC and PCs don't come with split memory as far as I know. The current gen consoles-like PC specs thing makes little sense to me considering how exotic the PS3 architecture is.

I have this strong feeling shit will hit the fan when they actually start porting it over the PS3.

Ingame grass is awful actually, they should remove it entirely and it would look a lot better.

Meltdowns.

Maybe i's just me but the movement of Snake's feet looks a bit strange as he walks in a crouching position. To me it looks more like they are sliding than walking.

Everything else looks fantastic though.

You do know that PCs have separate system RAM and GPU RAM, like the PS3, right? Or is there some joke I'm missing here?

I'll be very surprised if they're really don't have the game already running on PS3. Probably they choosed to show it on a PC, because the PS3 version isn't optimized and wouldn't do a good thing to show it so early.

Yes.

I remember back when the first MGS4 trailer was shown with the FPS stuff. Looked pretty damn good. MGS4 I felt was downgraded a little bit when it finally came out.

Still. Super excited for this game. Love that it is Big Boss. Love the setting. Love that it is continuing what happened with Peace Walker. Would be cool to have Old Snake back, but I feel he got a good send off and should just be left alone (Kojima should of told his staff to fuck off and had him pull the trigger), unless another MGS remake or something were to happen. Hell, it would even be cool to have the NES games fully realized with current technology.

But yeah, after MGS3 and Peace Walker, Big Boss is definitely my favorite Snake.

What songs are you guys going to blare on your chopper?

That downgrade was Sony's fault, not KojiPro's. That trailer was built on PS3 target specs and the GPU got downgraded a lot after that. Granted, some of Kojima's goals in the original MGS4 concept were insane, like having plants grow in real time, and never would have made it in anyway.

ATTENTION PEOPLE:

Don't forget the subsurface scattering on a models skin. Letting light cast through their skin where applicable.

5:55, 7:11, 8:33, and then again right at the end of the gameplay snippet as Big Boss boards the chopper. Definitely jumping between different timelines. Some of it is Snake, some of it is Big Boss.

Kojima is a brilliant bastard.

That wasn't going to be in MGS4, just a concept what "next-gen" could do, according to Kojima, plants growing, plants being burned by fire etc.. But there was supposed to be destructible environments in MGS4.

No. Kojima never did anything weird like that, but people always assume he is messing with their minds.

Oh, OK. Cool. Didn't realize that.

Seems like a fuck load of people didn't play Peace Walker. =/

- This is Big Boss, Even though a lot of people STILL seem confused (Old Snake? lol). He's not wearing the bandana, which he threw off at the end of PW.
- Little boy is Chico. Already confirmed during the conference but also the little X on his right cheek.
- I'm about 90% the burned dude is Zadornov. The design but the dialogue hints at it as well. Calling Chico a traitor (which he and the rest of the army did to go with Big Boss). Also he seems to have knowledge of Cipher (Major Zero) and the real Paz which was also a little hinted at the end of PW.
- The girl that the burned dude is talking about to Chico is most likely Amanda. I assume they tricked or manipulated Chico to rat her out. Thus giving Chico his "award" and keeping his promise to kill her quick.

XOF is pretty obvious. The weird thing is why so secretive about it. Erasing the XOF logo and throwing away the badges. The two Phantoms, my guesses are Zero and Big Boss. Big Boss made his own FOX unit and i'm going to guess Zero made XOF.

If Zero STILL isn't shown i'm going to flip. One thing that bugged me about PW was the Twin Snake project, nor the Patriots (Eva, Ocelot etc) were brought up at all. Sure it's been a couple of years and already explained in MGS4 but you would figure Kojima would mention something about it.

Amount of light on hair changes = flipping between entirely different characters.

Right...

Why, would they both be wearing the eye-patch? lol. I seriously can't see Kojima bringing Solid Snake back. If anything rewatch the video mirrored, since a lot of the imagery and promotional material is reversed. THAT could be Kojima hinting at something.

That just means kid in spanish.

edit: nvm, it's a PW character. Never played that one.

Yes, I recommend playing PW before you start analyzing a video that seems to be taking place after PW. lol.

I'm started to buy the two different time periods theory but I think both periods will star Bog Boss. One shortly after PW, looking for Paz and Chico as a prologue like the MGS2 Tanker, and another that deals with a bigger conflict.

Really? That is unfortunate. Personally, it is one of my favorite MGS games. Was a tear jerker at the end.
I agree. So glad it was in the HD collection.

I'm not playing any helicopter music myself. Seems kind of tacky for a sneaking mission, I don't even know if having a helicopter pick you up on sneaking missions is that great. I wish it was something more covert.

Looks similiar

Landing gear setup is completely wrong.
Its two front one rear not one front two rear.

Considering Big Boss has the capability of constructing giant robots from the remains of other giant robots, this seems fitting.
Yeah. I'm starting to believe they just came up with that the way you said. There is nothing exactly like that in reality.

Closest thing right?

I've never played an MGS game but this one maybe could be something for me, i dunno, will i actually understand anything from the story? I watched a friend play MGS4 and alot of stuff and references got me all confused on so many levels..

almost no one played PW, shitty because it's a fantastic game.
