Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

Wikipedia says that all the MGS games should be played in this exact order:

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP)
Metal Gear (NES)
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX2)
Metal Gear Solid (PSX)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)

Wiki doesn't say that. It just lists the games in chronological order.

Chronologically they are in that order but to play them in that order I would not recommend. There are things in MGS3 that are fan service for those that played MGS2 but if you play MGS3 first you might not understand it. Oh and you will be upset at having all the options in MGS3 and portable ops then to degrade down to metal Gear.

I recommend to play the games in the order they were originally released so you cna see the evolution of the series and the gameplay.

Er, so I popped MGS2 for a minute and played around for about 3 minutes. My god, this game still looks incredible, MGS3 looks extremely bad in comparison, wow.

You play in order of game releases. There are too many injokes in MGS3 to play it before MGS2.

While playing mgs2 I've noticed that it's silky smooth, I'm guessing it's 60fps? Which brings me to my next question, did they go down to 30fps for mgs3?

I've got all the games, should I just keep my essentials sealed? I bought it for collecting, but I kind of want to see the discs/art.

If you don't plan on selling it someday, you may as well open it.

Quick question, what exactly is the difference between the original MSG2 and the MSG2 in the essentials set? Sure we got screwed out of some cool theater stuff or something like that that came on a bonus disc but is there anything else? If i remember right wasn't there some skateboard thing or VR missions or something? It's been ages and i don't remember what was on Substance or Substinance or whatever the MGS2 rerlease was called, i can only remember the pain of the stuff i didn't get in the MGS3 LE lol.

It should have the skateboard thing and the VR missions, as it's MGS2 substance in the package.

There's no disc 2 for MGS2: Substance so the collection isn't missing anything as far as that goes. Only missing the second disc for MGS3.

It is MGS The Essentials, many forget that. MGS1 was worth it alone for me. Now I want a PSN version! Get to work Tanod!!!!!!!!!!!

Just my luck... I put in MGS2 and noticed it was causing my system to make a weird hissing/moaning noise. So I look on the bottom of the DVD. I see some weird ripple/oily/greasy looking circular pattern; something I've never seen before. Hopefully Best Buy will let me exchange it... Do y'all think they will?

Bought this yesterday. Best thing I bought in years. I had no idea Subsistance had its own free roam camera, wow what a breath of fresh air from the original version of MGS3.

I just want to see a PSN version of MG1 and 2, in BCR style (but not necessarily how it looks, just in how they went around doing things, INCLUDING perhaps VR mission :D)

I need some help with MGS3. How do you
get out of this damn cave? I have my NVGs, torches and am looking around yet I have no clue. My battery is almost gone and I see no exit.

MGS1 is up in Japan now. I was buying the essentials mainly for MGS1 too.

Just to be absolutely clear: I don't have any connections with/at Sony at all.

Check your map.

Where you first started out in the cave there should be a crawl space to the wall (to the left i think?). Just follow that and dont fall off the waterfall and you should eventually exit into the next cave part :p

I feel sorry for whoever plays the games in that order. They is so much storyline and all that you will not understand if you play in that order. So many internal jokes, situations and whatnot will not be understood by a regular gamer.

If you ARE a completest, then i suggest the following order:

Metal Gear (MSX)
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX2)
Metal Gear Solid (PSX)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)

Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and Portable Ops can be skipped if you are not a completest and if hurdles like "now owning a PSP or Subsistence Disc 2" comes along.

Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake story is revealed in extensive detail in MGS1 for PSX.

Portable Ops' story can be easily guessed after playing all MGS titles but is still pretty important. Will be added in MGS Saga Volume 2 if you don't have a PSP.

my copy from Amazon arrived today. replaying MGS1 now, and it doesn't look half bad on PS2 with the smooth texturing on.

can't believe people prefer the VA in this over Twin Snakes though. i forgot how bad Mei sounds.

"Look at yo radah, Snake!" :lol

I can't find a copy of this anywhere, i'm in the Brampton/Mississauga area so if anyone knows of a place I can pick this up please let me know. It's pissing me off.

Thanks Tanod and Mox didn't know the rerelease of MGS2 was only 1 disc. Gonna have to fire this up later to check it out.

My main reason for buying this was so that i could own a disc copy of MGS. At most i'll try out 2 and 3 from essentials just to check out any changes (like the camera in MGS3), howerver if i ever did feel like playing to recap the stories i'd play my old copies (the originals) since i've got saves on both that would allow me to start with stealth camo :D.

She's Chinese. Have you really never met a foreign person?

Accents or no accents, MGS1 voice work is still better than Twin Snakes, most importantly still David Hayter's best rendition of Snake's voice.

i can't get over how different everyone sounds. Campbell sounds really gruffy, like Snake in the later games.

i prefer TS since it's more consistent with the rest of the series and is still well acted. and i prefer some of the script changes...

That is true. I just love DH as Snake in MGS1.

So I finished MGS1 tonight.

First thing, I really regret playing MGS3 first. It's already clear to me that I should have started with MGS1, so I'll probably replay MGS3 some time after finishing MGS2.

Second, well, my thoughts about MGS1 are about the same as they were for MGS3.

Kojima's design aesthetic - Shit tons of variety in the gameplay, shit tons of options, shit tons of codec conversations, great presentation, and yet there's a lack of polish in some areas and a lack of any sense of consistency.

It's a boon and a blessing. You certainly can't say that any MGS game is repetitive, but it comes at the sacrifice of some polish in the gameplay. It's nice that Kojima plays around with tons of ideas, especially in boss fights (even if they're a bit overrated), but there sure isn't much sneaking in this "stealth action" game.

And of course, I do have some general complaints about aiming and the camera system, but I don't think either kill the experience. The aiming is probably my biggest complaint, it really made me angry during the
communications tower and final scene in the tunnel
.

Presentation is incredibly strong though. Much of the time I was thinking "Wow, this was made in '98?" The graphics are of course dated but the voice acting and cutscene direction is simply spot on.

I'll be taking a break of about a month or two before hopping into MGS2. Gonna have some buffers via Ninja Gaiden DS, Okami, and The World Ends With You. Keep me from burning out.

Just finished up with the trilogy, and I have two questions for the vets.

PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T FINISHED 3, DON'T HIGHLIGHT THE SPOILERS.

SERIOUSLY, DON'T HIGHLIGHT THEM.

LAST WARNING.

First...did Adam and Eva even really exist, or was it all just supposed to be Adamska meeting up with Snake?

Second, it mentions that E.V.A. disappears in Hanoi....is it said anywhere on exactly where the Les Enfants Terible project took place? It would lend a lot of credibility to her being the trio of Big Boss' son's mother....

Just in case, if anyone does have an answer, it should probably be done in pm.

I disagree, Hayter's voice work in MGS was inconsistent. At some points he was good, other points he was just plain bad. His voicework towards the end was just no good. His best rendition was definitely in MGS2, easily.

MGS3 was kind of flat, maybe more to do with the dialogue

As far as the accent goes, that was a mistake in the original script. Ryan and Kris talked about it on a KojiPro Report. Basically it said that she needed to speak with an accent and they later learned it was a mistake and so it was corrected for Twin Snakes.

Yea, MGS3 spoilers ahoy:

SPOILERS
Yea, it was just Ocelot who was supposed to show up but decided to help on the sidelines when he found out about Eva. But Ocelot wasn't really one of the codebreakers. He was a CIA spy and a student of the American philosopher's branch who infiltrated the KGB ranks by pretending to be an American defector. He was the child stolen from The Boss and The Sorrow by the philosophers.

There isn't a specific location mentioned about the LET project. But I would imagine it was somewhere in the west as the UK and US both got their share of the Snakes. It could be possible that EVA is the surrogate mother since she was forced to flee China and was fired from her spot among the Chinese Philosophers branch. Plus she's known as Big Mama in MGS4.

fuck, regular copies of Subsistence are getting expensive.

I thought I was smart by selling off my copies of it before EC came out....just rebought one :lol :\

And just my luck yet a-fucking-gain...I can't exchange it cause they have no more copies left...I swear, everything I buy has a problem. TV had a dented screen, laptop had dead pixels, now my damn MGS2 disc is screwed up(these are just things from the past few weeks/months). Shit, I even had to exchange my damn FFXII CE cause the tin case was dented. Then, of course, on my new copy the bonus DVD has a deep ass scratch on it and 1/3 the videos don't work. Fuck, I suppose I can expect something similar with my MGS4 LE...Actually...my original MGS3 Subsistence disc didn't even work right. I had to freaking rent the game at Movie Gallery and swap the discs. /RANT

A slightly off topic post... does anyone know if ebgames still accepts the old MGS, MGS2 and MGS3 for trade-ins. I'm tempted to buy this so may as well get it for a bit off.

I just read that Big Mama in the MGS4 trailer was
Eva
from MGS3. It's funny because yesterday I was playing and thinking "Man, I wonder how much she has aged since the cold war era," because a lot of starlets from back in the day have aged and it's weird seeing them young and beautiful and then watching them age through photos. I think it was some sort of premonition.
