I've never played Metal Gear Solid 1, and I just tried to play it and I just can't. I can't tell what the fuck is going on, the PS1 graphics are killing me. Should I just skip it and move on to the PS2 games?
No, the first game is amazing. You need to play it.

No you just suck it up and get better. You won't know what's happening in MGS2 if you dont play the first one. There is another option though if it's about the graphics.............TTS, yeah that's right gaf I went there.:D

I sold off everything to get this. I ended up making money on the deal.

MGS1 ($15)
MGS2:Sub ($25)
MGS3:Sub LE ($100) - I kept the MGS Saga DVD

I originally purchased MGS2/MGS3 on release date. I then sold those and bought the Substance versions. So I've owned (will own) MGS1 (x2) MGS2 (x3) MGS3 (x3).
:D

that was going for 50-100 for awhile on ebay, not so much anymore

buy Twin Snakes if the graphics bother you that much.

I got my copy today at Gamestop. I also pre-ordered the first game I've ever pre-ordered in the 26 years of my life: MGS4 BITCHES!

Sorry if this has been asked but this is my first time playing MGS, anything in particular i should or shouldnt do? any general tips?

Yes, you shouldn't be in this thread since it's already filled with spoilers

Don't treat it like a shooter use stealth. The box is your friend be one with the box.

Stick with it. Don't run up to people and expect to live. Stealth is the name of the game, and choking your enemies is a little harder than CQC.

Seriously, I'm going through the game right now, and I'm just breezing straight through XD

BTW guys, is there anyone playing the first one on PS3? I've been hearing weird clicking/foot stepping noises throughout certain codec calls and cutscenes, two with Cambell and Master, and during the "Metal Gear?! It can't be! You knew?" cutscene. Its sounds like footsteps occuring in random locations across the two speakers (not to mention, I have virtual surround sound on, so its even more awkward).

I played it a few months ago and don't recall any of those problems.

To the "new to the series" people: The games are hard. The controls are complex. But there are so many ways to approach different situations because you have so many options. They really do play unlike any other game.

Stick with it and you will be rewarded with some of the most fun and unique gameplay that you've ever experienced.

EDIT: I have played the first game on PS1 and GC many times but somehow, I've never owned the PS1 version. I sold my copy of Twin Snakes to afford the collection and I'm glad I finally own it to play it through again after all these years.

What's the difference, without causing a meltdown?

*subscribes to thread to read Constanza's posts* I would give an arm and an eye (ha) to be in your shoes right now. MGS1 is easily one of my top 3 gaming experiences ever.

I've always wondered why people look down upon MGS: TTS. I thought it was great and an improvement over the PS1 version.

It's definitely worth playing it through to see the MGS1 characters rendered in GC-powered graphics. I enjoyed playing through the game with MGS2 gameplay but the fact remains that the levels and enemy design are particularly tailored to the restricted moveset of MGS1 which makes MGS a purer gameplay experience. The controls were also originally conceived with the Playstation controller in mind.

i don't even know where to fucking go

Whenever you reload your game, it gives you a quick summary of what just happened and where you're going next.

I think MGS has held up brilliantly, kind of a glorious simplicity. It has a few caveats, but not really any more than any other classic I can think of, and the fact that it has just that; few, for a fully 3D PSone game is pretty outstanding.

But in terms of the meat and presentation, it's still so great. Great scenario structure, great narrative and voice work, great mood and music, as far as big action/adventures go this and Super Metroid hold up the absolute best, to me.

Part of the testament to it's quality is that Twin Snakes overhauled the superficial bits and still managed to fucking ruin it through subtleties.

You're so fucking right. In everything.

I'm willing to import this baby, but! Is the second disk of Subsistence worth having? What's on there exactly: theater mode (what was this again, cutscenes put together with fluff?), online and what else? Is that disk a must have?

The MGS'es I have now are

-Original PSX and TTS
-SoL, no Substance
-SE, no Subsistence

should I just track down Subsistence or get this entire, awesome looking package?

i think subsistence is a must-have. the new camera adds a lot to the game, and makes it better. you still need to use the old camera every now and then, but switching is easy--press the r3 button.

I'd get this package, given that you don't have Substance.

Sure, the Subsistence that was released years ago is better than this one, but its main appeal is the 3D camera, and you're getting that in this one. Also, Substance really improved a lot upon Sons of Liberty, so you really have to own that one.

Sorry for the crappy phone pic (no digital cam yet), but I just picked up my set. :D

Yeah, I've heard those noises a couple of times..very strange indeed.

Oh? What exactly? I thought Substance was just SoL + VR Missions?

anyone's ship from gamestop.com? This amazon order is never going to ship so I think i'll just order through them.

How did Substance improve 2?

This is the first time I've owned it and I played the shit out of the original MGS2 (like "100% of the dog tags on all difficulty levels in the tanker and 2 difficulty levels of the plant" playing the shit out of).

I'm reading what's in Substance now and it doesn't sound that hot tbh. How does it improve SoL exactly? All I'm seeing are (zany) extras

how the fuck am i supposed to kill a fucking tank

Hidden for the whiners:

Quickest way is to toss grenades up into the machine gunner's seat. Drop chaff grenades to jam the main cannon or use claymores to blow up the treads so it's immobile. You can also shoot out the gunner with the Socom or FAMAS.
