Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

Oh? What exactly? I thought Substance was just SoL + VR Missions?

Well, it's mainly that, yep, but there were some subtle improvements on the main mode too, like a small cut-scene that was missing on the original Sons of Liberty US release (I think they added it for the PAL release, though; I'm not sure).

But if you're deciding between getting this package (Substance and Subsistence's first disc) and the complete Subsistence version with the two discs, I'd definitely go after the Essential Collection. I mean, Substance has waaay more content than Subsistence's second disc.

got mine tonight... the cases for the games are better quality and look cases than a normal ps2 game

How did Substance improve 2?

afaik, the main game wasn't altered, but substance does feature tons of vr missions, and there's those pesky "snake tales" (which are a bit dull, since cutscenes are gone and you get plain text instead), but I liked playing as plissken:D

there's also the demo theater, which lets you switch around characters for cutscenes. bit pointless, but it's fun to play around for a little bit

jus picked up my copy. I was late to the party with mgs. I remember playing the psx demo cd long time ago, but never picking up mgs until I heard a story about how mgs 3's ending was so great.

Long story short, I played mgs 2 first and it grew on me. I admit I didn't know what the fuck i was doing in the tanker section, but as I got more used to the controls I was in. I admit I fell asleep during one of the cinematics and was confused as fuck at what was going on, but the presentation and mgs world was engrossing. mgs 3 was good...

I've been looking for mgs 1 and I can finally play it on a ps3 without having to worry about the memory card issue.

I fired up mgs 1 and I don't know what yall talking about for a ps1 game it holds up pretty well. I can't wait for mgs 4~

8.8

Another way of putting it: the entire MGS series for $30 is an 8.8.

What a useless review. I dont care about the score, but why the hell would you tell someone on your staff to review the exact same games that were reviewed before except with different cover and disc art.

MGS = 9.8
MGS2s = 9.1
MGS3s = 9.8 (granted some people will take off points because second disc isnt there)

IGN actually gave this collection a 9.5 (rounded down from 9.6 for the whole second disc thing)

I'm actually not too far behind Costanza. I beat the tank and I'm part of the way through the second building now, got the missles.

You're ahead of me now actually. I took a break once I got into that building. Resuming now

These guards are fucking stupid shooting at me

I think you should try playing after a few drinks... I don't know if you'd do better but it would entertain the heck out of GAF :D

WHY IN THE FUCK wasn't first person mode on the missiles told to me by the game, found that shit by accident and it made things 1000x easier

does the collection include the first two msx games that were present in mgs3 subsistence?

This has been asked hundreds of times in this thread and the answer will be "NO". They should sticky that, for people who wish to buy the MGS: Collection, but won't if MSX games aren't included.

I've never really been into Metal Gear but I picked this up today wanting to give the series another go. Does anyone know where I could score Portable Ops cheap? I'll do the ebay thing if required, but I'm wondering if anyone knows how hard this is to track down in brick and mortar stores new or used. Is MGSPO rare/hard to find?

I'm not picking on you in particular, but this is probably on the verge of becoming a bannable meme at this point.

Like... everywhere. Portable ops is like 10-15 bucks online at most places and 20 brand new still if you want to nab it from a retail story.

I have not been able to find Portable Ops all year long at any EB or Gamestop at home or away at college. Seems like they all went away after Portable Ops + came out, I want to find it and play through it so I can get that part of the story.

crap, that was actually my deciding factor since i already have all those games. i guess i will have to hunt down mgs3 subsistence.

This is like The Orange Box, minus two releases, but for half the price... This shit is golden and an 8.8 is criminal after seeing the individual scores of each of those games.

Yeah, I bought this out of principle alone. It does make for some excellent backup copies, should anything happen to my others.

I do wonder if it will have collector value one day, though. I'm guessing it will, given the apparently low print run, and the fact that it'll probably be one of the last great PS2 releases.
