Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

Tyrone Slothrop said:
too bad twin snakes never got ported to ps2. having that instead of the original mgs would've really sealed the deal. it's sort of weird and inconsistent having a psone game in the collection. but i'm satisfied regardless.

If that was the case, people would ask for Kojima's head on a platter.

No fucking thanks, Twin Snakes was a terrible remake.

Just beat the tank. I only played twice: once in japanese, once in english. Playing through again and seeing all the foreshadowing and clues is awesome.

Got mines today! ^_^

I'm reading through the thread and I'm lovin' Costanza's reactions! It helps takes me right back to 10 years ago...okay, I wasn't that bad at it though. :lol

Costanza will have absolutely no excuse for not eventually figuring out Psycho Mantis.

I'm just going to say that outright and leave it at that.

Wait, a PSOne memory card is required to save MGS? Even if you're playing on PS3?

If you're playing on a PS3 you can use a virtual memory card.

Where did you guys pick up your copies? Gamestop's website is showing no copies in any of their stores in my state, Best Buy doesn't even have it listed, and Circuit City says it
s not out when it clearly shows it's release date as the 18th.

Help please. :(

A gamestop in So Cal. The guy had like 8 copies in the drawer and said they had 0 preorders.

At my GameStop, we had like 8 copies. 2 of them were preorders, which included mine.

Tips for those of you playing the set on a PS3:

1: buy a dualshock 3. The import price is the same as the US price is going to be when it comes out. You will DEFINITELY want the rumble for all 3 games.
2:
to change your controller slot, press the PS button and go to controller settings, and then to assign controller
3: you can play MGS1 on all PS3s, and the other 2 games only work on 20, 60, and 80 GB PS3s. So dust off the ol PS2 if you have a 40 GB.

smh @ people who compare this to Orange Box and think it should be scored accordingly

OB had 3 completely new games (Portal, Ep2, TF2), which is not 'some new content'. This has no new content, what did you expect.

something to note: If you want a truly authentic MGS1 experience, dust off your PS1 or PS2, because we currently have two confirmed reports on weird audio playback during audio clips of people talking. It can only be described as "footsteps," with a type of clacking you only hear in echoy lobbeys. Most notable aspect of said discrepancy is that it'll be all over the sound stage. It doesn't happen in every cutscene or codec call (or even the game over screen), but it occurs enough to take away from immersion.

i haven't played it. but i always assumed it more or less was MGS with updated graphics

Not really, it actually made many changes in the way the story is presented, and many of us didn't like them.

The gameplay is kinda different too, but in a bad way, because it's so unbalanced and broken.

Never played MGS before, so I'm not sure what to expect. I know after Okami and Bully that I'm fucking tired of long and frequent load times though. That's my main concern about MGS.

Don't worry, you won't find long ones in the MGS series. The games load between areas, but it doesn't take much time.

No such things there dude.

EDIT: Beaten senseless.

Wish we had this in the UK. Its proving a pain to track down a copy of MGS2:Substance, never mind MGS. And dont even ask about Subsistance, it still goes for £25 preowned :/

This one FAQ told me to destroy one of the camera guns with my socom, but I can't seem to get snake to aim up at it, I'm always shooting under it. What am I doing wrong here? (MGS1)

You're probably looking at a The Twin Snakes FAQ :D You can't do what you're saying in the original MGS.

This series isn't Mario Bros.
Skipping cutscenes in a Metal Gear Solid game is tantamount to complaining to a Movie Theatre Manager that they should fast forward the talking scenes in an Action Movie so that you don't have to sit through them and be bored!

Watch the Cutscenes and you'll "get" why people love the Metal Gear Solid Series.

Don't watch the cutscenes and you might as well go play Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels or something... :/
QFT. I never got people who complain about cut scenes. I always wondered what kind of ADD mentality it took to be impatient enough to the point you can't appreciate the excellent writing and voice acting. Then again, I guess that's what separates people who play games on a regular basis to those who pick up Madden every so often. Oh well, you can't turn a harlot into a housewife....

Huh, weird. I'm playing on my 20gb and haven't noticed anything like that at all. I got up to Psycho Mantis before quitting last night.

Is this game worth it just for Substance and PS2 memory card-compatible MGS1?

Just wondering.

This MGS1 is not PS2 memory card compatible, is it? I think it still requires a PSX one.

I think a lot of my concern comes from the fact that I've never played a game that had cutscenes that were both long and good. If they're good, I don't necessarily have a problem with the length in and of itself, but when it's something like RAD, where you're taking a break from giant robots beating each other up to listen to someone whine for five minutes about working at a grocery store, then it gets old.

Come to think of it, I didn't have a problem with the cutscenes in Okami, and those were fairly lengthy and frequent, so I might be fine with MGS, since it seems that everybody loves them.

You'll probably have a problem or two with MGS2's unnecessarily long codec sequences, as most people do. But yeah, MGS1 and MGS3 and fine in that regard, especially 3 once you get past the prologue.

Sorry if this was already covered, I tried to search it. I assume these games are exact copies of the originals. They didn't by chance fix it so that we could get surround sound over HDMI on the PS3 for MGS2, did they? I would sell my original games and buy this collection if they fixed that.

Well shit.

Okay, then. Is this collection worth it just for Substance? I currently own the original MGS1, regular MGS2, and MGS3:Subsistence (with the second disc).

If you have the original Sons of Liberty US release, I'd say get it. They made some improvements on the PAL release that they put in Substance, too. And then you have the VR Missions and all of that stuff, of course.

Why wouldn't you be able to get surround sound over HDMI for MGS2 in the first place? The PS2 BC should take care of that already.
