Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

mgs1 was a masterpiece at the time. since then its aged quite badly. its too bad TTS didnt really do much to change it for the better.
i dont understand why people say mgs1 was better than mgs2 or mgs3.....storywise it was easier to understand than mgs2, but the gameplay/production values in mgs2/mgs3 danced circles around mgs1

Because, Solid Snake is awesome, Liquid Snake is awesome, and i totally wasn't expecting them to be "brothers", Psycho Mantis is teh shit, Wolf was sexy and a badass, Grey Fox is the most badass character in MGS, T Rex rocks, making a run for the bathroom to see Meryl's panties was awesome, Raven Fox was awesome too, and when Liquid starts talk about les enfant terrible you just listen, because fighting against your "brother" on top of T-Rex, shirtless, trying your best to save Meryl is some True Van Damme shit, followed by a rockawesome jeep chase.

And did i mentioned that there's two endings, and Solid Snake is badass, with that badass suit of his!?

Mgs1 has the best story and characters. Mgs2 was cool, but the whole "We just fucking with you, the cake is a lie, lol what a loser" part of the story is kinda wrong man, i mean really? ReALLY? Did Kojima need to do that? I'm not even talking about Jack. Now, Mgs3 was cool, but some of the characters were just filler, the pacing is broken at the beginning, it ends with a huge bang and that's what made it so good. But Big Boss ain't no solid Snake to me.

Portable ops was cool too, honestly? I didn't need Mgs3 or portable ops to be made, but i guess it was cool to see what made Big Boss turn into the man he turned into.

Anyway, Mgs1 fucking rules.

MGS1 might take my favorite spot in my heart for it's impact but MGS3 is the best game. MGS2 and especially MGS1 is so limiting in comparison.

Gameplay wise, sure. But i would be lying my ass off if i said that i played each game multiple times for their gameplay.

Mgs4 looks to have awesome gameplay though.

Well, even though Sons of Liberty happens to be my personal favorite, I've always believed it to be the most flawed Metal Gear Solid title. (Excludding the Twin Snakes, of course.)

Real quick:
- Storyline could've been handled better. (Which you pointed out.)
- Finale felt rushed compared to the other two main installments. (Basically everything post-
AG crash
.)
- Numerous codec conversations needed to be edited down, cut entirely, or replaced with a cutscene. And...
- Gameplay was mostly restricted to narrow coriders. (You'd enter a hallway, silently pluck off one or two enemies with a tranqulizer dart, then move on to the next loading point.)

Then there's aspects about the original that many just prefer over the sequel, like the characters, boss battles, soundtrack, voice acting, etc. None of which has aged.

Also, just to throw it out there, MGS1's gameplay is still as tight as it's always been. No jittery polygon is going to change that.

It will be very interesting to see what they do with the MGS1 disc.... Will it be a reprinting of the original US version, or a new version with Integral features? And will it come in a PS2-styled DVD box even though it's a PSone game? It looks so, and that's kinda cool.
What about the 2nd Subsistence disc? MGO has expired and the MSX Metal Gears aren't advertised anywhere in the products description. Will it still be included?

You sit through the cutscenes when you play again? I have played all the MGS games a ton of times, probably only sat through the stories once or twice.

Aside from the gameplay and story being the best, the other reason MGS3 is the best in the series is rather simple.

Preordering this ASAP once it becomes available. I still need MGS2 Substance anyway. I wish they would fire up the Subsistence servers again though.

I've played through MGs1 over 15 times. I sat through the cutcenes and codecs every time. MGS2 played more like 7 times or so, and did that.

Mgs3, only 3 times. The story only becomes engaging very late in the game. And the game feels a bit boring the 1st half.

MGS1 is the best MGS and GAME OF FOREVER!!!!

Boss pictures

Meh you're nuts. Only cool thing about her is the reason why she dies and what that means for the whole saga.

Only character in MGS3 that truly stands out is by far Ocelot.

And what's up with the super lame CQC in cut scenes? It's like Snake is fighting in slow motion against Boss, they look like retards, while i watch those cut scenes all i can think of is that even i would kick BIg boss's ass.

Yeah, not only do I sit through the cutscenes every time I replay an MGS game, but I also obsessively refer to the codecs just to hear all the conversations and to uncover new ones. MGS3 is just stacked with great miscellaneous ruminations.

She had every character in the game, including Volgin, scared of her. She was also without question the smartest character in the game. I'd only rank Snake above her as my favorite characters in the series.

As far as why the cutscenes seemed like they were in slow motion, well during many of the CQC scenes they were actually in slow motion to show you how technical she is. Like through a simple movement she was able to dismantle Snake gun without him even knowing it until he looked at it.

And the PS2 continues to get great content.

Day one buy for me. :D

Me too. I have Snake Eater but do not have Subsistence (£35!) so this looks like a good deal. Won't get rid of Substance as I doubt this will come with Documents of MGS2.

I know sometimes the moves were in slow mo, but many times it wasn't, and when it wasn't, the movement itself was always slow and predictable. It was the low point in the cut scenes to me. And that one in the bridge where she does that to the gun and he doesn't even notice, wtf, that was some lame shit, it's not like she did it superfast when he wasn't seeing her, she did right there in front of him.

The cut scenes where really poorly choreographed, the most hilarious fight cut scene was by far the Big Boss vs Ocelot in the plane, like wtf, ahaha when Big Boss has that stance and then the moves suck monkey balls, and it's slow and the only cool part is when he's thrown at the wall. Oh man, really, that was same lame choreography and direction too.

And Bah, it's easy to make a character the end all be (Boss having everyone scared), all Kojima needed to do was give her rep. AH!

That way even a 10 year old can do it. She did her part in the saga, but i didn't find her all that interesting, but obviously to each his own.

MGS3 has the best final hour of any videogame in the history of videogames.

Yeah the whole ending part is pretty damn fucking awesome.

But! MGS1 has the best plot twists in any videogame in the history of videogames.

A close call between that and KOTOR. Was pretty fucked up to know what i just had done after going through all that trouble with the damn cards. Wtf

And also i didn't know the relation between Liquid and Solid, so that came as a shock to me too.

...I love how every thread relating to MGS turns into a "my first mgs is better than all the others" discussion :|

I mean, seriously, to WrikaWrek: no one cares. I played MGS2S like 20 times, that doesn't make it any better than the other two games. I had a teacher in highschool who watched Rocky Horror like 20 times, doesn't make it his most favorite film.

As for the TTS >/< Original bullshit flying around since the first page (and still somehow around by the 5th), I've already given my points as to why I think TTS is superior in terms of what it is, and why it pales in comparison to the original in terms of gameplay, but let me restate a few facts:

TTS was directed by Japanese action film director Ryuhei Kitamura (who DID NOT DO DMC3 CUTSCENES), known most notably for Versus (a horrible story but great over-the-top action), as well as Azumi (in which Kojima played a role as a random mercenary extra). If you watch Versus, you'll come to have a better understanding of Kitamura's action directing/editing style, instead of constantly pointing out the "matrix" style slowmotion, like an ignorant xenophobic american moviegoer.

Kojima gave TTS his blessings. TTS was a joint project. The game has better lipsyncing than either MGS2 or 3. Audio recording and mixing is superior.

Now here's a few of my opinions:

Political correctness of accents aside (or lack of accents), I am firmly rooted in the camp that believes that TTS has superior voice acting than the original, and for several reasons. Most notably, its far more professional, less campy (or melodramatic/animeish, for that matter), <3 new Grey Fox voice, and of course, the awesome cutscenes. Admitedly, there's more cheese in TTS than the original, but the two version's cheese to camp ratio offsets each other, and therefore fairly equal in that respect.

As for music, all I can say is that it works for its own game. The scene where Wolf dies were excellent in both versions, and the addition of seeing Fox plowing through the hallway of soldiers (with the addition of a nod towards Eternal Darkness near the end) was awesome. The music for each game works for what the director wanted, is what's most important.

And finally, gameplay was fail, I'm not saying more than that. You know it, I know it, but that isn't the point of what I'm saying. Like I said in a previous post, the game was rushed, and fans got exactly what they wanted: "MGS with updated graphics and awesome cutscenes."

"Follow up question: Will it have the same graphics as the PS1 version or will they be "improved?"

Or do you not know?'

I would assume it's just a straight port. It would be weird if they did all that tweaking considering the price and considering they made TTS already as an "improved" version.

"See, if Sony hadn't removed BC, they could've just re-release the game for the PS3 on one blu-ray."

And your point is...?

My point is, I want it on one blu-ray? :(

I guess this will suffice though, even if I already have them all. Will probably pick it up at some point, hopefully it won't become rare so I can pick it up cheap sometime in the future.

And I don't think MGS1 is a port at all, it's probably the exact game in a DVD box and very likely playable on the PS1 as well. After all, the box doesn't even say Playstation 2.

Don't you mean "Since Sony did removed the BC, Konami could of make a Blu-Ray version of the games to be played on."?

Could you stop putting quotes within quotation marks? It's annoying. We have a system for a reason.

I don't really see what the point of putting it on a blu ray instead of 3 dvds or something is :/

30 bucks isn't cheap enough for 3 phenomenal games?

Uhm, other games might take priority over games I already have. Therefore, it's probably cheap when I have some money to expand my collection for the sake of it.

Not quite, I wasn't talking about a port. Just a one-disc version for PS3 owners. With BC, no need to port the games, since it can already play them. Like how some re-released games on the PC comes on a DVD instead of several CDs.
