Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

MGO was actually on a separate disc but no, it won't be included.

Oh yeah. I should really have remembered that seeing as the game is sitting about 10 feet from where I am currently sitting.

:lol

I've heard that this collection includes Substance, but only the first disc of Subsistance (so no movie disc, and no MG1/MG2). If true, that kinda sucks. Can anyone confirm/deny?

http://i29.tinypic.com/1i3wx.jpg Seems to imply the same thing (notice how the extra features of Substance are mentioned, but none of the extras in Subsistance are).

Also, has anyone been able to pre-order it from an EB/Gamestop in Canada yet?

Yeah, only first disc in Subsistence. Ryan said so in the podcast.

Aside from those of us buying this for duplicate Metal Gear Copies, this is like the poorman's MGS collection.

No Document of MGS2, no VR missions, no Subsistence LE or bonus disc.

Hell if I could find Subsistence LE at a reasonable price I would have bought it :(

This is much better than buying Substance used for 25. After I get this, then I'll just need to buy Ghost Babel and VR missions again (I sold it when I was 13 to buy a Dreamcast) and I'll have everything.

Do you not read the posts above yours?
There's only the first disc of MGS3:S included.

For the people wanting Subsistence with the second disc, I found one clearanced at Sears around Christmas. It was $15 and change. With a lot of luck, you may still be able to find one....

Why would you need Subsistence with the second disc anyway? I mean didnt Konami shut down MGO PS2's servers? Unless you just wanted it for collection purposes.

All that stuff is great but most twin snake haters point to the fact that the gameplay and design are significantly worse than in the original MGS.

as is the cutscene direction, the soundtrack and the voice acting. twin snakes was a disgrace.

I think Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 are on the second disc. I wanna say there's a boss rush mode on it too.

Interesting. I still have my copies of Metal Gear Solid and the Original Metal Gear Solid2. I somewhat recently purchased Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence but I haven't yet played it. I would be playing the games on my PS3 so the memory card issues isn't an issue for me. You swap discs once, so I don't know if it's worth rebuying but $30 is a very very good price. I'm on the fence here. I know I'll only end up only playing the games just once through to prepare for MGS4, should I just save my money and play what I have?

man if MGS was replaced with the twin snakes this would have been a no brainer. Still I am very tempted at this point.

Just wrote this up and wanted to make sure you guys saw it. I don't remember seeing it mentioned anywhere else. Metal Gear Solid is a port to the PS2 so there won't be any disc swapping and you won't need to track down an ancient PS1 memory card to save on the PS2.

fuck awesome. I lost my PS1 memory card long ago and haven't been able to play MGS1 since then. :D :D :D (it better be true)

don't you know that Twin Snakes is OMG FUCKING INFERIOR to the original?

I wasn't a fan of Twin Snakes. The gameplay tweaks weren't enough for me to overlook the horrible audio and insane cutscenes. I mean, the MGS series is known for crazy cutscenes, but Twin Snakes was just something else.

The graphics of the original still don't bother me to this day, so that's just another reason I'd replay that before Twin Snakes.

I wonder if they'll include this with MGS?

It would have been nice if they at least raised the resolution of MGS1 for this port. I played MGS1 for the first time on my Dreamcast via bleem which smooths out the visuals and raises the resolution and it's a big difference.

Playing MGS1 on Dreamcast > playing MGS1 on any Playstation platform.

The box says 4 discs, the KP report even confirmed its ps1 discs. What are you on?

Well I remember back when Ryan was talking about trying to get that 20th Anniversary edition over here he brought up how there was an issue with reprinting PSone discs. So that might've popped up again and the easy way around it was just to print it on a PS2 disc.

why the Twin Snakes hate dudes? I played the original (favorite game that gen), but i liked the graphical upgrade on TTS. I didn't like the control scheme on the GC, but if TTS plays like MGS2 then I'd be all over it.

wait, so the MGS1 version that comes with this won't be able to save on a PS2 memory card? i'm confused now..
The version of MGS1 coming with The Essential Collection can save to PS2 memory cards for sure. I'm just trying to clarify now if the game is being pressed on two PS2 CDs or one PS2 DVD.

I'm so confused. I can't find the piece of evidence that I saw way back that showed the details about the box's contents, and being 4 discs total. Can anyone confirm?

So it contains Substance and Subsistence? If that is true it would seem strange to not include VR missions. Did the Japanese release contain Metal Gear Solid: Integral?

I'm happy to hear about Substance. I already have VR Missions, Document of Metal Gear Solid 2, Subsistence: Special Edition, but I never bought Substance. That alone makes it worth it for me. I absolutely loved VR missions, and I can't wait to play through the VR missions in Substance. I would also enjoy having a copy of VR missions for PS2.
