Metal Gear Solid V Spoiler Free Impressions Thread

Is it possible to miss something permanently? Like a tape or a specific prisoner? I hate that kind of stuff and it forces the completionist in me to stick close to a guide.

I only read on page so far and plan to read the whole thing... but in case it hasn't come up yet, I need to ask:

Any impressions of Vita remote play? Button mapping? Playability?

I've been playing GZ with remote play lately, and the touch pad mapping is a bit wonky... though I think I got it down now (double tap left side to pause, double tap right side to pull up map). I'm just wondering if the final games does it any better/worst. And would like general impressions from someone using it.

I can see myself playing main missions on the TV, and Side Ops on the Vita while the TV is occupied. Micro-managing mother base, etc.

I haven't tried it yet but the fact that I regularly use all the buttons, (Both shoulders and clicking thumbsticks) has put me off even bothering to give it a go. I get the impression it will be a nightmare, Maybe fine for motherbase like you say but no way in the field.

Mission 14

Soo.. Maybe around halfway through? Do we even know how many story missions there are?

I hope gathering resources and developing stuff won't turn into a massive grind later on. I am playing on PC, so I guess I could.. You know, if the grind does get ridiculous.

Oh, shit, never even thought of this. It seems you can replay any and every mission though, and I'd imagine everything respawns in the open world when you visit your MB and come back, so I doubt there are any permanent missables. Would be nice to get confirmation, though.

Having played 14 hours from yesterday and this morning, I am truly loving every aspect of the game. The game's Prologue reminded me in terms of sheer greatness to that of TLOU and is the price of admission on its own. Completed 4 missions and 4 side ops as I take these games slow because I also like to free roam and have benefited from it.

Not being a great stealth or otherwise gamer in terms of always getting a great rank in any game, it is very easy to get a hold of the controls, movement of the player is very fluid and easy to get used too, and have gotten a B rank on first four missions. It seems the ranking system is really suburb as I have gone stealthy in beginning and some guns at the end of missions.

The landscape is very vast, with things blowing around in the air, the sounds of the environment such as flags blowing, guards talking, animals making noises, dust moving about in areas, the sounds from zooming in on areas, gives the world a sense of being alive. The particles always being present such as dust kicking up in front of you or around you give it a sense of the desert setting.

The upgrade system is truly awesome so far as you have to roam for those all important fuel, metal, and flower materials to build up your motherbase and platforms. There are plenty of materials, when you interogate the enemies its a great satisfaction sneaking to get that all important materials you need.

So much meat to the game already, just going to a small outpost with two or guards is satisfying as you have so many options on what you want to do in taking them out. There are a huge amount of upgrades for each item.

The world looks beautiful and no issues with pop in guards at all on PS4 and steady frame rate. I am the type of player that roams so I take my time going back to mother base each mission and or side op. Doesn't hurt listening to Take on me around the world.

In the first minute of game play in the world of Afganistan just searching for a bit you can find some neat materials... The little vases , bottles cracking when sneaking and knocking them over have really realistic sounds as do all the sounds I have heard so far, explosions are nice, the little things I enjoy like shooting at something and seeing what happens, pretty impressed with that.

The mission structure and level design is best I have seen to date, really nice with how much freedom you have and how many ways you can do things. I never replay missions in games usually, bit I can see myself going back because of this structure and things I missed already in missions, its like each time you interogate someone there's something else to do and find, and it brings you off the beaten path.

Good shit. I generally play an extremely sneaky stealth game but take my time with it since I love exploration. It's good to know the world and missions seem pretty supportive of that kind of thing along with mother base and upgrades, which all sound fantastic fun

EDIT: I forgot to mention I don't think you can miss them PERMANENTLY.

You can miss tapes for sure, some are scattered throughout the environment and if you never explore a certain area you may never get it.

Question about the tapes...

So I really want to listen to them, but I don't necessarily want to sit on a pause screen for 30 minutes while I do it. Can you listen to them as you are traversing?

Yep, you can listen to them at pretty much any time. Enter the tapes menu, start a tape then exit the menu and it will play in the background. When that tape finishes it automatically goes to the next tape in that sequence.

It didn't seem possible in GZ, and it drove me crazy in Wolfenstein, especially since those story elements were so good.

Yes, of course. That's the great thing.

And of course it was possible in GZ. did it all the time.
Every battle is a boss battle, you are Big Boss.
If they don't come to the boss battle the boss battle comes to them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those aren't permanent missables, right? As in, you can always go back for them.

I've logged in over 3 hours on the Xbox 360, it looks great and plays just as well. The controls feel a little tighter compared to Ground Zeroes, but all in all I am loving everything you can do.

Hows things like outfit customization and stuff like that. I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff. Are there preset ones, camo/facepaint options similar to Snake Eater?

Okay so I'm a big fan of the series and played every MGS apart from 3. Am I going to be left scratching my head with parts of the story? Would you guys recommend playing 3 first before I dive into 5?

This makes no sense. Why you never played what most think is the best Metal Gear game yet?

I love Steam but.. If I had gotten the console version I would have been playing this almost a week in advance.. I have my key and activated it on Steam, but because it's "not officially released" yet they won't unlock it.. Grrr! :(

You definitely should, I think you'd get more out of it. I envy you for being able to play MGS3 for the first time. I'd love to experience it fresh again.

I did just that last month. The game holds up very very well. It has one of (if not the best) boss battles in all of video games and a story that will stay in your head long after you finish.

This is a pretty direct story followup to 3 and Peace Walker. But mostly you should play 3 because it's the best MGS game.

Yeah, if it wasn't for the inclusion of Japanese voices in the Steam version I'd have caved by now and bought it for PS4.

Yeah. I definitely would.

I have a copy ready and waiting to play on my Vita. I've never got round to playing it for some reason. Don't worry I'll rectify that now.

That's all the incentive I need to start a play through. Thanks for the responses.

The vita version is excellent too. Good controls. Bluepoint did another great remaster.

doesn't feel like I'm halfway at all, I'm sure there was something about 50 main missions

Lol jesus how is this thread spoiler free of you guys are talking about how many main missions there are and stuff?

Da fuck im out

Should get my copy tomorrow from allyourgames.nl ( hopefully if it doesnt come that would suck )

There was some speculation that the alternative E3 demo could've been from a PC build, as it looked better than the primary E3 one. Konami said it's PS4 though.
If anyone on PS4 has time could you snap a screenshot from this view to compare, or at least say if this matches the retail build?

If it's actually PS4 I would be very positively surprised. The vegetation and LOD seem so much better than GZ.
A bit late :P but here's my try:

Be sensible, if your spoiler sensitive about the tiniest of things don't go in any thread related to the game at all.

So, having played probably 15+ hours of the game I have some gripes. Note, pretty much everything other than what I list below is a positive, but MGSV has some aspects that I don't care for.

This game feels like a combination of Far Cry and Splinter Cell for the vast majority of its playtime. It just happens that is an awesome combination, but even more awesome are those 'Metal Gear Solid moments'; they do occur, separated by a good deal more Far Cell missions, however. It's fun but it doesn't avoid the issues Far Cry has in particular, as that shows in its Side Ops mission design. Some are uninspired to the point that I'd be sure they were randomly generated, but they are not. Others are OK, though.

Then there's Mother Base. It works, and it's nice to look at. My issue with Mother Base's influence on the game is in how you build and acquire weapons. It feels like a grind, and 15 hours in I still mostly use upgraded versions of my starting rifle and pistol. There's a ton of lethal weapons that conflict with the idea of Fulton-ing someone.

And the "AI capabilities of the FOX Engine" thing isn't something I'm seeing. The AI is good, but the 'enemies countering my tactics' thing just seems like standard game difficulty progression. I got headshots, they got helmets, and I assumed there was a connection. Then they started using (this really isn't a spoiler, but I feel like tagging it. It was shown in the gameplay demo's and highlighted, so it's a known thing)
decoy's
before I ever used one myself. I used some items twice and they started countering it. It seems tied to progression through the game (like most games) more than to your actions.

I find myself thinking "Oh yeah, this is a Metal Gear Solid game" at quite steady intervals through the game. It's easy to forget, or at least it is to me. The game will throw a mission at you that makes you think "Yeah, this is Metal Gear" then it'll throw a number of "Oh, this is Splinter Cry" missions at me.

this is so great that people are already playing an i gotta wait till next week...

glad to hear the game is great though and though

A bit late :P but here's my try:

Thank you a lot. You got the view perfect for comparisons.

It seems like I was afraid of and the E3 alternative gameplay video isn't actual PS4 footage, but from PC. Or then the final build was optimized.
The release build has much worse LOD with many objects / vegetation missing.

It's still not bad and better than GZ, but I'm a bit disappointed.

They even straight up denied it was PC when asked, but dunno how it is: https://twitter.com/Ken1555/status/618465271414521856

Lod and the pop in of large terrain in the distance is still a huge issue, so distracting to me personally.
Hopefully the pc version is like GZ and doesn't have these issues

Absolutely. Side Ops, Managing your MB or just going to free roam to collect things is more than enough for an hour or two. I wouldn't jump in a story based mission though just incase since these tend to be unpredictable.

Doesn't the game auto-save though? I don't think I'd mind being in a story based mission and having to leave to do something then coming back to where I left off, I mean, I would since I'd want to keep playing, but you know what I mean. The current-gen consoles also have rest/stand-by modes which allow us to get right back to where we left off.

Just played the opening section. Great opening imo. Very intense. But the camera movement during cut scenes made me a little dizzy. I had to take break for a moment... Maybe I'm too old for this kind a game :p

From what I'm seeing, the retail PS4 screenshot look to have much better texture lod, the E3 one have blurry textures (btw it mean it wasn't running on a pc). But it also have less vegetation.
Maybe they traded one for the other.

I also see the building aren't identical, seem like they added little windows.

Yeah you're right, it could be they added some better AF and reduced the LOD to achieve that.
It still could be it was on PC and they lowered some settings to mimic the PS4 visuals, which resulted in worse textures (yet having higher LOD in distance), but no way of knowing that really.

I posted this in the DF thread too, so this thread won't be derailed. The game still looks absolutely good on PS4.
