Metal Gear Solid V Spoiler Free Impressions Thread

I've been playing this for about 2-3 hours now and the biggest dislike I have so far is that Big Boss doesn't react to anything in the game. He barely speaks, even when directly asked a question...I mean he won't even nod his head. For instance if you remember that gameplay reveal video of afghan, that's near the start of the game and Ocelot asks a question about his arm "Getting used to it?" To which Big Boss says nothing, he doesn't even nod his head or grunts to hint something like "whatever". That kind of muteness and non reaction is absolutely immersion breaking for me in games because humans don't react like that !

Especially jarring because this is the third game with Big Boss and we've seen him in other games and he is never like this. I don't want him to go on babbling all the time and make grunt noises and repeat words ("Metal Gear?") like in previous games, but I would want to atleast see him behave like a person. Perhaps he is saving his energy for that long ass speech at the end of MGS4 :p

Also this is not really an issue but a pet peeve. Granted this is Metal Gear so the tech is never completely realistic, I've still found that the iDroid is too sci-fi/futuristic looking (it was there in Ground Zeroes in 1975 !) with its holographic projection, document scanning and all. In MGS3 they made an effort to atleast make the game seem like it's set in the 60s (wired radio, microfilm etc) but after MGS: Peace Walker I doubt anyone or even Kojima cares about appropriate level of technology in timeline. lol

I'm going to disagree with others and say that gameplay isn't really accessible, especially if you're new to Metal Gear. As an example, last year I played Ground Zeroes before playing any of the other games and I had an absolutely awful time of it. Constantly getting seen, not understanding the way that stealth works in the game, etc, and all of that was coupled with being completely uninterested in the story because I had no idea what the fuck was going on.

A week or so ago I replayed Ground Zeroes after playing through the whole series and I came out of it with an A rank (a big deal for me). I actually understood the stealth mechanics at play, I was interested and compelled to go on because of the story, and I was used to how MG feels.

I don't want to dissuade you too much but you could try Ground Zeroes first, and if you enjoy that then maybe go for it. But as a first entry to the Metal Gear series I think it would be not only overwhelming but also very hard to go back and play the others, if the story did interest you, as this is the most advanced and open the gameplay has ever been.

Thanks for the insight! I will play Ground Zeros again today (Thanks PS+). Let's see how it will work.

Here try these reddit threads. you can learn lot in these threads about story. this will get you ready for the story. read the comment section also. it does have good information. There was some GaF threads but i cant seem to find it.

I never liked the iDroid too. Plus the fact that helicopter extraction had to be in the Intel menu instead of just directly a buton on the map

How is difficulty compared to GZ? I personally found GZ a bit too difficult at first...Finding place to hide when caught was bit hard cause the base is limited. I assume TPP will have less of this problem since the map is really big?

I'm curious what the recommended difficulty is. I definitely plan on turning off the reaction time mode or whatever it's called.

There have been a few times that I've been seen in a bullshit way, sometimes through things people shouldn't be able to see through (like a door), and reflex mode is handy for that.

The problem is that it's easy to rely on. I can do things knowing that if I get seen I have a fairly easy out. The game can still be challenging with reflex mode on, especially when aiming for S-Rank. Turning it off I tend to play a lot slower and make a lot more calculated moves, but I can see be seen in a way that seems like bullshit.

They fixed that with a shortcut, you can cycle your map function with the dpad instead of just being able to place markers.

It's beautiful

First impressions : It's nothing no one haven't already said.

However, I do have one minor nitpick. I wish the game is a bit more on the nose when it comes to nudging the player to listen to the tapes.

I'm not sure if these questions can be answered yet, given the servers are down, but want to get GAFs opinion:

Should I go digital or physical for PS4? Have we heard if there's a GTAV situation where it performs better from disc? Or which pre order items are better?

I'm in the first mission still but I'm already loving the gameplay. First time for a long time that I really feel free what and how to do. And the enemy AI is no joke. Very impressed so far.

30 hours in and this MGS is going to ruin linear games for me. I've always prefered linear games over open ones, hell I had a lot of doubts about this MGS because it's open world. But unlike every open world game that I've played, this one actually has some effort put into the level design, every area feels like it's carefully and brilliantly designed, the level design is just.. exquisitely intricate. And the depth of the mechanics plus the buddy system.. I don't know why I doubted Kojima, this MGS simply smokes its predecessors.

Story wise tho, not sure it's going to live up to MGS3, but for me, maybe nothing will.

A few missions and side-ops in and I'm still not a fan of the mission-based structure. Feels incredibly disjointed and I'm struggling to feel really invested. Going back and replaying missions just feels wrong. Where's my hand-tailored narrative adventure? Bleh.

Only an hour and a bit in but wow, the opening is really brutal and intense. Best opening since TLOU.

It was really different than TLOU. But IMO its better than TLOU's opening.

TLOU opening was really emotional but MGSV has the kind of an opening that makes me want to go back to the game as soon as I can.

Anyone know if l stood around for 4 hours if the lighting changes in realtime?

If you mean day/night cycle? then yes.

People thought the opening was good? Personally, I thought it was pretty boring, if not ridiculous at time (is dat Moltres). Then again, cinematic gameplay sections that play themselves are what's in nowadays.

Anyway, so far I'm not impressed. Snake seems like a jRPG mute protagonist that sometimes remembers how to talk, and with Ocelot (why is he not a buddy?) coaching you all the times Big Boss comes out as a moron. The cassettes aren't doing it for me either, I want to listen at them, but it's hard to with characters speaking over them all the times, not to mention trying to sneak around.

I just read a brief summary of the metal gear story so far. What. The. Fuck.
Some people need to learn to burn the bodies. "Believed to be dead" must have been mentioned like 10 times in there.

I'm seeing credits after/before every mission, does it stay like this all the way? Kind of annoying that the transition to and from base is not that seamless due to all the mission report and loadout selection menu.

There shouldn't be any difference disc or digital, the console never read the disc when you play once the game is fully installed. It just read it once when you start the game for authenticating purpose.

What is the order of ranks? I know that S is the best one. And why am I code name chicken? :( is the codename only for one mission or for all?

Damn this mother base, managing your team, is ridiculously meaty, price of admission on its own, holy shit level 14 R&D after 23 plus hours, it makes you scour the world for elite soldiers and fultoning tons of soldiers as you expand your mother base... Your levels even go up and down for each platform if you move soldiers from one to other, so much time spent if you want at managing your base, just got combat unit... Money means something also as GMP costs are pretty high so you have to go out and find those diamonds...

It's awful, isn't it. Really takes me out of the experience.

Thanks. Do you know if you can craft/develop the day one DLC items? Particularly the Adamska and the different fatigues?

The story isn't shit. Like, there's some legit good writing in this. I'm digging it.

Holy shit, Kojima.

I'd have to agree especially since this is following the PW format, it's miles better than PW. Not sure if it could surpass the other previous MGS games but so far it's very intriguing and gripping.

Is there actually a reload save button? Can't see one anywhere.

Checkpoint. Otherwise it's just continue if you're coming back after turning off the console.

PC gamers watch out for spoilers, theres an ass posting links about updated minimal req but, the link goes to imgur with major spoilers in pure text, the first 4 words already are huge spoilers.

Not a story spoiler and barely a gameplay spoiler, but I'll tag it just for safety

Where you do you find the intel for Chapter 1 in
