Metal Gear Solid V Spoiler Free Impressions Thread

I'm about 6 hours in. THIS GAME IS FUCKING ADDICTING. Peace Walker 2.0 is right on the money. I love going into an area and just not doing the main mission and Fulton everything back. Scouting for good recruits then figuring out how to get them alone so i don't alert others. My one gripe with the game is the character spoilers. Basically when you start a mission it says "starring" and list every character that will appear in that mission. So of course it will say venom snake but then it could say other characters that you haven't even met yet!

If this is truly Peace Walker 2.0 looks like I might not enjoy it as much as I thought.

You know, for longest time I convinced myself that I didn't care for Peace Walker, having quit at the infamous end-game bit at the end.

Went back to it just the other week and actually beat it, from start, all the way to finish. It really is a good game overall, just hampered by the grind at the end (which isn't so bad if you sort do the prep work as your making your way thru the campaign) and it's.... it's interesting story.

Just played through the intro, fantastic stuff.

My only complaint is that for the amazing fidelity of the engine, fire and smoke look like total garbage. I don't get it. It seriously looks like an up rezzed PS2 fire effect. Just a bunch of transparent animating dark orange textures.

Compare it to the astounding FX in Mad Max and it just makes you scratch your head.

(Early release here in Taiwan yesterday)

Absolutely Peace Walker + Ground Zeroes. Can't decide if that's a good thing or bad thing just yet.

The good news is, it IS addicting...and it doesn't feel quite as grind-driven as Peace Walker. Yet.

Breaking up the story into a mission structure is probably as far removed as it gets from a "traditional" Metal Gear game. I can't lie, I DID want something more in line with MGS2, 3 (ESPECIALLY 3), and 4. I guess I did want a more linear Metal Gear game because that's what it's always been for me, the joy of having a cinematic story unfold continuously as I play in a linear fashion.

So now Kojima has embraced the sort of open-world mission design structure I suppose he's always wanted.

It's the least "MGS feeling" game in the series; a lot of the mythology that kept me coming back is absent at the moment (haven't played enough to say)...but it DOES do open world, outpost takeover better than any other game around.

Game is incredible, that's for sure. I'm just not convinced it's an incredible METAL GEAR game (again, YET).

As of now, it has a long way to go before it can see MGS3.

I'm
Just read the first couple pages of this thread. I find it so hard to believe that there isn't much story/cutscenes in the game and its all left to cassette tapes. It's a huge bummer. I'm hoping there's more cutscenes as you get closer to the end of the game.

Atleast the gameplay is great.

Story is non existent I feel like every mission is a side mission.

I'm pretty disappointed in the story, because it's just ride here by horse kill and repeat.

Do the story missions actually tell a decent story or are they all just sneaking around and tranqing guards and disabling shit and gathering resources? Or is there more to it? I'm just seeing a bunch of missions that seem pointless

A bunch of missions are pointless from a story standpoint. The vast majority, I'd say. Maybe a third of the missions I've played so far are meaningful, and that's a generous third.

The gameplay's absolutely top tier, so it isn't so much of a problem, but the 1/3 that remind you you're playing a Metal Gear Solid game are amazing. And that 1/3, so far, comprise one of the better stories I've seen in a Metal Gear Solid game. Coherent, intriguing, strong characters etc.

If this game trully has a bare bones story that is a big fail on Kojima's part in my opinion. They should have looked to Witcher 3 as an example of how you can have a big world but also a large and seriously compelling story. I believe that some of the previous games, namely MGS4 went overboard with the cutscenes, but to react by stripping back the story entirely seems ridiculous for an MGS game. Hopefully I am missing the mark though.

Haven't played yet so this is just my gut reaction from the news: MGS4 is what happens when you indulge on too much of a good thing. The cut scenes lost impact because there were so many which went on for so long.

Lets hope less will amount to more. I'm hoping that when something is said in MGSV it is importand and has meaning, lets leave the vast, vast details and slideshows and subtleties to the tapes.

Thanks, makes me feel better. I'm super excited for the gameplay I was just hoping that the narrative would be woven around the missions more, like I think there could have been a happy medium.

A few spoiler-free impressions from the first Afghanistan mission (I haven't actually finished this mission, but I've done the first part), I've played about 135 minutes in total:
• it's brilliant!
• the prologue makes me think that Kojima really could helm a film.
• found a cassette take blaring some 80s new wave, picked it up. As I went out the door again, a guard was walking up to me. I managed to sneak away but noticed he was wandering around the room I was in. Was he looking for the tape?
•the (story) tapes: really interesting, but in gameplay it is quite annoying if you're having middle eastern geopolitics explained to you and someone comes over the radio to explain how to ride the horse or whatever. Only fault so far.
Edit: oh sweet Jesus, I went to make a sandwich and my ps4 sent into sleep mode. Hope this has been autosaving

Yeah, it's pretty disappointing. After the prologue this game turned into just one big side mission.

I love actually playing these games, but Kojima has always had the story there. I don't mind the idea of less cutscenes because... holy shit, but I didn't want the polar opposite to happen either. I think though in the end that I'll be having so much fun that I'll completely forget about it and as Alienous said it still sounds like there's a story and a pretty damn good one, it's just not prominent for large stretches.

That prologue. Wow. I can tell already, I'm in for a wild ride. I just hope some of the questions raised do get answered, I would hate to see something left unresolved.

But please, no MGS4 kind of resolutions.

hmm... Konami's statements so far regarding FOBs and MB Coins have been pretty vague.

via Gamespot:

So you can't earn MB Coins in single player mode and you need those to invest in FOBs beyond the first one. My guess is that, other than paying real money, you earn MB Coins through online play and gathering resources through FOB invasions and the like.

Well, those statements were made weeks before the ones I quoted. I guess we'll see, but if it did turn out this way, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if a company was willing to pull damage control so their product couldn't be changed before people could refund it en masse.

Should I play Ground zero first?

I was planning too but phantom pain turned up early today. I'm just worried of missing the story (I've played all the other mgs numerous times).

Glad I finished Gears on xbox1 last night now!

It's a little bit.

No story spoilers, light structure 'spoilers' in tags (necessary to answer your question, but some might rather not know).

The main mission design is more inspired than most Ubisoft open world games. If you've ever played Splinter Cell Blacklist
main missions tend to take place in large, purpose built areas that feel ripped from a more linear game, like Blacklist.
.

The Side Ops
populate these areas with different objectives/guards. 'Return to this place but find an item (via interrogation, for example). It's similar to Ground Zeroes in that regard, but Side Ops exist in the world and don't need to be activated by heading to a menu or marker. They're, essentially, hundreds of busy-work activities that give you a reason to revisit areas. They're pretty good.

Objectives range from finding animals, to finding documents, to destroying vehicles, etc.

So, TL;DR, it's quite 'Ubisofty' in a sense, but all of core elements like level design and gameplay are so much better that returning to an area to do even something menial is a joy.

Reminds me of ShinobiDo.
I played that game for so many hours, even though you revisited all the same places 50 billion times, with slightly different objectives.
It's still one of my favorite games though, so it doesn't worry me too much.

So some of the suspicions I had before release are coming true, I really hated the base building in Peace Walker and loathed the fact that true ending was hidden behind it. Which is why I was skeptical about this game to some extent and I feared that an awful lot of gameplay would be just fetching stuff with a lot of non progression. Infact these missions (the once I have played so far) could very well have been made randomised using RNG and the location of outposts could have been randomised as well and nothing would feel out of place.

The mission so far have all felt bite sized. So far all of them have been go to this mission area to fetch some shit or kill someone while 8-9 guards are protecting the target. I am loving the gameplay but I am not getting to play enough and once I am done playing I am not getting much of a payoff from playing them (i.e. plot progression etc).

I also hope there are hidden bases, mission specific underground complex and stuff.

Are the first hours good enough to take your mind off of something that has ruined your day?

Absolutely, the prologue itself would be enough for all of that :P

PC gamers watch out for spoilers, theres an ass posting links about updated minimal req but, the link goes to imgur with major spoilers in pure text, the first 4 words already are huge spoilers.
Thanks for the update. Will watch out. But "Chico is Quiet" is only 3 words?

I feel like I'm the only person who isn't crazy about the prologue.

The scope of it is rather impressive, and I admire the bravery of the first minutes of it where it's paced more slowly. But once shit hits the fan, it starts taking on this really repetitive rhythm. The various shocking moments run together, and once you understand the basic idea of what's going on, they're incredibly predictable. It felt exhausting by the end, going on and on, seeing the same kind of thing over and over.

The game proper, on the other hand, is amazing to play, even more open-ended and adaptable than the best sections of MGS4. I can't wait to get back to it.

Those names...lolol
