Metal Gear Solid V Spoiler Free Impressions Thread

I'm sad to read this is the least MGS style game in the series, not being a big fan of open world games i think i'll skip this one, i like MGS games with lots of story cutscenes and crazy plots.

😖

Gameplay is fantastic and very rewarding though, despite them stripping off a lot of cool equipments and mechanics like camo index.

The Camo Index is still there, only invisible.

Healing was mentioned in previews, iirc: if you are badly injured, like busting your leg, you can't sprint and must find a safe place to heal yourself by pressing triangle. Haven't seen it demonstrated in streams yet, but I assume it's still there.

Eating and Stamina management would actually make sense in this game as there's a day/night cycle, but I feel it was left out because it would just be some menu stuff like MGS3 and would take the player out of the experience.

Those names...lolol

I got a male recruit called
Stubborn Cow.

The names are fantastic.

S-ranking missions contributes to completion %.

Does completion percentage give anything except bragging rights? (I classify trophies as such.) I know in most previous Kojima games he went out of his way to give you cool "tangible" rewards like new gear and whatnot if you did well, but -- and I'm letting my personal tastes show pretty vividly in this post, I know -- I feel like the industry has gone wayward of that since so many people care about stuff I don't consider interesting, ie trophies.

I feel like I'm the only person who isn't crazy about the prologue.

The scope of it is rather impressive, and I admire the bravery of the first minutes of it where it's paced more slowly. But once shit hits the fan, it starts taking on this really repetitive rhythm. The various shocking moments run together, and once you understand the basic idea of what's going on, they're incredibly predictable. It felt exhausting by the end, going on and on, seeing the same kind of thing over and over.

The game proper, on the other hand, is amazing to play, even more open-ended and adaptable than the best sections of MGS4. I can't wait to get back to it.
I agree a little, it has very high production values but it runs on way too long and becomes very same-y.

So many copies of the game out in the wild kind of ruins the feeling that Sept 1 is the day we all get to experience it.

I don't mind that others get to enjoy it now, and I don't mind waiting. But Sept 1 doesn't feel like a special release moment anymore.

PC player here currently playing Ground Zeroes to tide me over 'til Tuesday. Can anyone confirm exactly what from GZ carries over to TPP? We've been given clues but not a definitive answer precisely what's worth doing in GZ to have carried over.

Yeah, it does feel like we people get it later than others at this point, not that they get it earlier. Really a bothering feeling that makes waiting even harder.

Sometimes you can unlock things in Peace Walker iirc from S-Ranking, but not 100% sure. Other than that, you won't be missing anything. Fultoning should take priority at first because it will help to have a lot of support from DD. After you create the Scanner for your binos, then you can be picky about fultons and kill everyone else.

Cool, thanks for the response. :D

Been playing for an hour or so, sadly have to leave tonight.

Prologue is good, but its very CoDified. Its a string of scripted events. Graphics are amazing on PS4 though. Gameplay takes some getting used to, the cover is organic like TLoU but not as quickly. Shooting is old school MGS with having to change shoulder and FPS option. Have to get used to it again.

Can't wait to really invest in it starting tomorrow.

The cover system is awkward. You have to push your way into the wall before it 'clicks', instead of using a button.

It feels like an unhappy compromise between having a dedicated button and well-executed soft cover like TLOU.

Its still sort of robotic. Which is unfortunate.

I hated Peace Walker and my distaste for MGS4 follows close behind.

Yet despite the comparisons people draw, I'm pretty confident MGSV will wind up one of my favourites.

Just gotta wait for the PC unlock while you fucks keep playing :(

I was hoping they improved it from Ground Zeroes, but it seems that isn't the case. The Last of Us did it so well.

Hope it's easy to get used to.

It has almost nothing to do with MGS4 other than having 'Metal Gear Solid' in the title. It isn't like Peace Walker outside of Mother Base and its mission structure.

But it isn't like much like Metal Gear Solid, either. It's like an open world Splinter Cell game, which as far as gameplay is concerned is probably a good thing.

It's different to Ground Zeroes. It basically requires you to get close to a cover surface then walk into it for a second. You have to push yourself onto the wall.

It fixes issues of accidentally getting stuck to a wall, but it makes taking cover feel awkward. At first I thought they removed the cover system, but then I saw how it was implemented. It's workable but not nearly as seamless as I would have liked it. As you said, TLOU does it well. You feel in cover but you don't feel stuck to it. But The Phantom Pain ... eh, the cover system isn't great.

Is there any way to use the helicopter to move in-between locations? I want to go from side op to side op but it takes me back to a high altitude.

I have been mostly messing around, really seeing how things work like materials and how they respawn.

One bad thing, side ops seem to be a huge disappointment. They have no rank, no score, nothing. They are generic "go rescue/extract guy" missions in bases you have done before. I would have enjoyed it more if side ops was more of a skill based mode like "eliminate all guards in a base in the shortest time" or "hold up 10 guards in 3 minutes". That would be fun.

That, to me, is a design flaw too. It doesn't seem technically infeasible; maybe the helicopter AI isn't smart enough to figure out a path, but yeah, it makes using the helicopter as a method of fast travel cumbersome.

EDIT:
Whoa, Pho, get rid of that man. That's somewhat revealing, even if it isn't a spoiler.

Please edit your post.

I don't know exactly what that might mean, and I'm a large ways through the game, but that could cause people to come to a spoiler conclusion they wouldn't come to otherwise.

Well, I guess I'm stepping out of this thread now since it seems like story spoilers are slowly appearing. I'm just going to bury my head in the sand for a couple of days.

Don'worry this was just an example. Not from me btw.

I've read the spoilers man, I don't want the game spoiled for people who are excited.
Get rid of it dude, this thread isn't for examples.

Edit: Being lucky enough to be on the top of the page - To MGS fans who want to go in blind: Time to jettison. Spoilers are being posted.

Edit Edit: I double down on leaving. They're still being quoted.

I'm glad I didn't read the whole post, but goddamnit, now I know the KIND of twist we're going to get.

sigh Hope it's pulled off well.

Hmm, I guess a spoiler free impressions tread is too complicated for some to understand. Fucking fun. :D

Yea... Now its a thread for the people with the game to discuss in-game stuff while sometimes using the spoiler tag.

Can't you people just move over to the spoiler thread? Maybe you dont want to be spoiled from the people who got the game earlier than you but you are doing the same thing to those without the game atm. It's still a spoiler even if you put a spoiler tag on it.
