Metal Gear Solid V Spoiler Free Impressions Thread

Is there any difference between calling in a supply drop using the map or using a supply grenade? They seem to do the exact same thing, and I'd rather not carry these grenades if they do.

Also, it seems like I get money back for ammo I already have when picking up a supply drop. Is that the case?

I hope basic gameplay mechanics questions aren't spoilers...

I didn't know that kind of grenade was back >_< It's cool though. Probably just an alternative so you can throw it while you're on the run?
Similar to flare grenades.

HOLY FUCKING MOTHER OF GOD!!!!!!!!!! I bow to kojima!!!!! Wowowowowowowowow

Those saying the open world feels empty leads me to believe the game is not endless busywork collecting crap. Im fine with main story and multiple routes to the objective, and optional side ops, tho a lack of fasttravel seems like an oversight.

How long is the campaign played at a normal pace?

40 hours. You're bound to do some side ops for money and recruits but if you focus on the story more, I'm hearing 40 hours. As for me, I'm doing both currently, 48 hours in, 22%. 49 side missions done

There is a fast travel in the game.

Holy crap, I just found out that tapping up and down on the D-pad on the map section of your iDroid is basically a shortcuts section to everything.

I hope this game impresses me because so far it has not. Yeah the trailers look nice but it's the gameplay videos that worry me. I've played MGS 4 and I found its gameplay to be average and the story a clusterfuck. Then I played Ground Zeroes and enjoyed the gameplay but it was short. TPP from the gameplay videos looks dull, a big empty map with a few enemies placed here and there. Is that all to it? Again my only concern is that there doesn't seem to be anything to the game other than the nice cutscenes, I hope I'm wrong.

Edit: Still haven't played it.

I guess I'll just ask in this thread. I'm not sure why, but I can't interrogate enemies while holding them up, the L1 button prompt didn't appear. I already had the translator, and I can interrogate enemies if I grabbed them, the L1 button prompt appear when I grab enemies. it's weird. is this a bug or am I missing something?

So, take Camp Omega as your starting point.

The main bases in the game are more or less that but there's multiple versions of it in each map and all are very different, in between that you also have smaller outposts with a handful of guards who stop you being able to just take the roads everywhere. If you liked GZ, then the TPP is that but more and the story is less intrusive than MGS4 because of how it's presented.

Every research for weapons and items have had timers of 0 minutes.

Only the
platform expansions
have had timers of 60 minutes or more.

Just wait. :P

Just patched, it looks like they added FOB stuff with weapons finally be equipable by the security team.

Also all R&D has a timer on it now so you can tell how long it takes instead of guessing.

I'll spoiler tag this but it was mentioned in reviews.
Its not a spoiler for the story, i doubt anyone will mind knowing what it makes you do.

The game forces you to redo missions with limitations on, personally i really enjoy extreme mode bosses, but the rest is very annoying

Just feels like a way to make the main mission count higher
That really irked me when I read it in the Gamespot review. Seems like a terrible design decision. Already dreading it.

I'm playing Ground Zeroes for the first time (it was free on PSN a few months ago). I gotta say, I'm pretty annoyed that I've played MGS1-4 and I'm still COMPLETELY lost at what's happening. I have no idea who these characters are or what's going on.

Is the final game better at explaining things than Ground Zeroes? There's a backstory option at the main menu but it's a page after page of text. Not the best way to quickly catch up on what's happening in this game.

All the events in Ground Zeroes follow what happens in Peacewalker, so it's not surprising that you are lost considering you hadnt played it before.

You need to play peace walker to know who those character are.

It'll get worse from there on. The game mention side character like Amanda, Strangelove, Coldman and you didn't even get a photo of how they look like.

I think you can still understand the story just fine even without playing peacewalker. But I think there are still a feel like you're missing something.

I'll ask my question here too:

Does anyone know why my waiting room in the mother base is always empty? I keep using fulton even when my mother base is really close to being completely filled. So what happens with the units that exceed capacity? I feel like I missed an option somewhere that allows my soldiers to go to the waiting room first when I fulton them. I've honestly never seen a single person inside the waiting room tab, it's always empty.

I suppose Snake got tired of keeping people waiting, huh.

I'm sorry I don't really know, I haven't fultoned enough people for that to happen.

I was in the same boat as you, I just set aside some time and watched this. 3 hours but I wasn't lost when I played GZ.

Anyone finding this game really hard?

I am on mission 3 and once a guard spots you the whole camp goes into alert for what seems like...well, forever. They never leave alert status no matter how long I wait.

I have to get good at this.

I don't know if its because I haven't finished all the side missions, I have finished main missions 1-50 but I can't get more than 5,000,000 GMP, I was like WTF.

I feel like they made it easier. You can make surprisingly much mistakes while still getting sn A or S rank. Even my worst main mission where I really didn't give a fuck ended up a B rank.

Use Phantom Cigar to speed up times, they will return to normal phrase. I like alert phrase in TPP, more realistic than previous MGS. They can't just find us for few minutes and thinking we had gone, makes no sense at all.

Guys, do I need to do something different to interrogate people while holding them up like in Ground Zeroes? The L1 button prompt didn't show up for me. I can only interrogate people by grabbing them.

Is it possible to use the helicopter to travel from one LZ to another instead of going back to base? It's getting kinda tedious hoofing it across the map for some of these missions.

Side-ops spoiler (gameplay, not story related)
You need to do a side-ops to get a Russian solider so he can translate Russian. This side-ops will be available for you after you complete A Hero way episode. Control it likes GZ

There's a trick to do that. While you're on area of operation (not Mother Base), pause the game, in menu there's "Return to ACC" choice. This will make you return to helicopter quickly but you need to save because it won't remember the process after the last checkpoint.

Nope, it's very irritating. Shortest trip you can do is: Evac to the ACC, Commence Mission drop in to new LZ.

Not to mention the multiple Press X to Resume Game you have to be ready for.

Put in 5 hours so far. It plays like a better, polished, fleshed out third person Far Cry game. Large RPG overtones with the open world traversal, building base.

It's not really a Metal Gear game. But it seems to be a good game.

Anyone playing the XBO version? I have the PS4 version pre-ordered, but I'm thinking of canceling that and getting it digitally for XBO, because I have a GZ save.

Just wanted some non Digital Foundry gameplay/technical impressions.

Personally I would say 1080p + the subsurface scattering on skin outweighs the imported chars for Mother Base (you'll get a lot of workers quickly anyway) so I would say stick with your pre-order. But if you really want them or prefer the XB1 controller go with that :)

sorry for having to ask a question with spoilers but can someone please tell me where you can find
Quiet and Ocelot
in Mother Base? I have a side op for it and can't find them for the life off me. Thanks

Ah ok, non of that stuff really bothers me but the imported characters don't seem like a big deal. I'll stick with the preorder.
