It's the perfect way to introduce newcomers to the series.

This thread for MGSV.

The community thread for the older MGS games.

I think the Legacy Collection is the perfect way to introduce newcomers to the series. What MGSV is doing is like if Tolkien suddenly introduced an amnesiac Frodo in Return of the King in order to explain newcomers what's been happening in the last books.

Is it a way to welcome newcomers? Yes. But as a veteran Metal Gear fan I find the amnesia plot device as annoying and cheap. I already know what happened to Big Boss, the less I want is the game reminding me of all the events and people I already met.

But to each it's own.

9 years. This man is 9 years in a coma. So this whole amnesia thing really makes sense. Of course the legacy collection would be the best way for newcomers but not everyone has the time to play those games or even want to play them.

I'm sure they will introduce those "flashback" scenes in a good way, it won't be just flashbacks from the old games which MGS veterans have already seen.

I can never decide which thread to post in.

This one or the community thread.

Such
here!

We generally receive MGSV updates at least once a month, and so there's almost always a new thread every month in which MGSV is discussed, but if you're ever looking to discuss the ins and outs of the series in its entirety, then the Metal Gear Community thread is probably the place to be!

I didn't say it made the game easier. I just don't like the amnesia plot device.

A cliche device but a welcome one to the series IMO.

It does provide a cleaner slate for new players and old players since the gameplay is essentially a new ballgame from the older games. Also for Kojima to meld the story how he sees fit.

EDIT: And yeah a 9 year coma is a long freakin time. Its good he's not full on amnesiac, I guess, and the memories will come back to him.

I hope if there are flashback scenes a little shoutout is thrown to Portable Ops. I saw the cutscenes on youtube and while the gameplay looked terrible, the story seemed pretty decent. It's the last MGS game where the bosses were actually distinct characters with different motivations as opposed to the homogenous roster of B&B corps and Peace Walker mechs.

Does the superfast sliding exit from the cardboard box blow anyone else's mind? I'm still bizarrely in awe of it for some strange reason. It's so funny to see that in a game that looks so realistic. No franchise pulls off not taking itself very seriously while at the same time taking itself deadly serious quite like Metal Gear Solid does.

The story of Portable Ops is fantastic except for a very few things
(Didn't like the survival of Sokolov, for example).

I agree, i don't care if it's unrealistic or not, it's such a great way to use the cardboard box more because normally when you get spotted you're pretty much fucked but now you have a way to use the box as a decoy. It's brilliant.

Oh and the pop out shoot someone and go back in is another great addition.

There is a lot of stuff that really blows my mind, MGSV really has the potential to become the best game in the series.

From what i've seen they just pull all the right strings for this game.
minus the instant alert.

Thank god for Reflex mode. I don't use it for S ranks in GZ but god damn I need it for my marking runs. I forgot to enable it again and a guard saw me around the time I marked 21/25. Instant alert.

From that moment, reinforcements fuck everything up. Got a couple of waves. Stuck through them, only to discover it pretty much bugs the trial because I'm left at 24/25 in a permanent alert-free environment. Everyone is dead.

Do you seriously expect someone waking up from a 9 years coma to actually have retained his mental and physical capabilities that he once had prior to the accident? Amnesia is being realistic and the fact he can barely walk after he wakes up is also normal.

Story. According to Kojima, Big Boss will awaken from his coma with amnesia and will slowly regain his memories of what happened in the past.

Which is terrible, in my opinion, but anyways.
i don't think the amnesia is meant in that literal a sense of having to go through the whole game with him screaming "WHOOOO AM I?!". it'll be a small refresher and not much else i expect.

we've already seen allusions to the boss and volgin in the opening hospital sequence, so i think it'll be quite front-loaded and brief. if anything i expect the hospital sequence to be a trip through metal gear chronology up until the end of gz simply because it's probably one of the few linear environments in the game where the player can be controlled and shown certain things that need to be picked up on.

as far as we know, the miller rescue mission is the first official one of tpp, and we know how big boss reacts when he actually finds miller. it's more personal than just rescuing a stranger, which lends itself to my theory about the amnesia not being long-lasting.

Dont think itll be long lasting either, but would set up the perfect Solid Snake "unnecessary questions" deal with Big Boss. But im guessing we wont be seeing that.

That's what I'm thinking will happen as well. A game with an amnesiac Big Boss doesn't seem like it would make much sense this late in the series.

Maybe the amnesiac thing is an excuse to give you a tutorial and learning curve again.

"Remember to press X to crouch and prone, you used to be quite the ninja back in your day, I'm sure you'll get it back don't worry!"

JESUS this would be amazing. Remember how Snake stands up a bit at the window and Ishmael brings him down because of the helicopter?

"[Press R3 to peek over corners", and with Snake being out of it as he is, he flubs up and nearly gave away his position until Ishmael stepped in. The whole tutorial of the hospital is like you just woke up from a 9 year coma. You probably have no idea what to do and Snake is a reflection of that (unless you've played Ground Zeroes).

Speaking of the hospital, does anyone like myself really want to see more of that area? We know quite a bit about the Afghanistan area so far, what about the hospital? I'd like to see the changes to the opening sequence compared to GDC 2013's demonstration.

I'd prefer not to see the whole thing, I reckon they've already shown half of it. The hospital thing was confirmed to be a kind of tutorial back when they showed it at GDC I think, so you can expect it to work just like that.

Just thinking about it, we literally haven't seen anything about this game. We know there will be a dog in the game, there will be a jungle location, that robot thingy (Metal Gear?) Big Boss rides at the end of the E3 2013 trailer? can we pilot it? how will it work? We haven't seen Zero yet. We know Skull Face vs Zero will be a big part of the game.

Gotta say they do now a much better job to not spoil things. As much as i LOVED the MGS3 trailers at the end they spoiled pretty much everything, from locations, to ALL bosses, even the final boss. I don't want this to happen with MGSV. Looks like they keep it closer to their chests now with MGSV.

Agreed. I will say, however, that I don't think they did too bad a job of that with MGS4's trailers. The problem with MGS4 was that picture of Big Boss getting leaked. -_- But yeah, I'm glad they aren't showing us much. Despite watching these trailers hundreds upon hundreds of times, the game will feel fresh regardless, you know?

So far... but I wouldn't be surprised if they show everything eventually.

Yeah in MGS4 we could see they already learned from their mistakes with MGS3.

Well if the game really comes out Early 2015 they would have blown their load already at the biggest gaming event of the year, E3. But since they didn't chances are high they won't reveal too much. Which is definitely a good thing since there is no chance i could resist a new MGSV trailer, even if it's spoiler heavy.

Dear lord, that LPer is popular? I don't get it he's not really funny. Chip and Ironicus are far much better and they blend 100% with pretty good banter.

People watch DSP (or rather, the montages of his LPs) to see him fail, rage and blame the game.
Not for his fantastic dick jokes or racist banters.

WOW!! Guys, the picture quality on the 1080p, 60fps Director's Cut trailer is crystal clear. Oh, my God. It's beautiful. Wow. This game looks absolutely stunning.

Holy shit balls, just watched it in 1080p, 60fps and fullscreen. It looks so freaking good jesus christ, blows my mind that this is a cross-gen game. Absolutely stunning. Imagine what they can do with the Fox Engine when it's current/next-gen only.

Nanomachines

My mind was blown when I found that out too. Awesome movie btw

Ha! Must be, right? Yeah, dude, I've gotta check it out!!

Oh, my God. RIGHT? I was freaking losing it; felt as though I was watching a brand new trailer. Makes me so excited to even think about Kojima's next title (after MGSV) when he is able to use new assets, and create a game that is built for next-gen. Blows my mind just thinking about it. I'm sure it will be an adventure game, but I just get so excited thinking about it, because these universes he creates are so unique and so vast - whether it be Metal Gear, Policenauts, Snatcher, Zone of the Enders, etc.

Agreed but that is also why I believe that Kojima wasted so much time developing the engine for current gen, when he should have focused on next gen...

I mean it took him so long that the gen for which he developed fox engine has come to pass...and now the MGSV is going to release almost 2 years in the next gen cycle.

Needless to say, PS360 versions of MGSV are destined to fail when it comes to sales... I will be impressed if old gen versions sell 25% of the total sales of MGSV.

So the game got gimped for next gen and has some really troubling stuff like insane clipping, when it could be made just for next gen.

As soon as the sales numbers for Ground Zeroes came in Kojima should've canceled the last-gen versions immediately and focussed on next-gen. Push that engine to the max.

I'm sure Konami pushed for last-gen versions too. Since the Metal Gear series is one of their biggest flagships. I can't blame them, they don't have much left you know.

The PS3 version of Ground Zeroes outsold the PS4 version in Japan, so it's possible that remains the case with The Phantom Pain. In North America it will undoubtedly sell better on PS4, for sure, but hard to tell how the PS3 version does in Japan.

And I don't know man. The game looks fine. The only thing that drove me a little nuts was the shadow freaking out behind Ocelot when he got off of his horse. I'm sure that won't be present in the final build, though, as demo builds can be a bit out of date when presented. But "gimped," though? Isn't this one of the first open-world console games to ever run at 60fps? I wouldn't say it got gimped.

i think most devs bought into the analyst and tech-media theories that the console market was dying. they really didn't expect the kind of sales they've seen (hardware and software) on 8th gen consoles. the safe bet from a business standpoint and for investors at the time was cross-gen.

but now that the engines are running relatively well on all 4 systems. i would be shocked if ps4 wasn't way ahead of the others in terms of development. i also wouldn't be surprised if PS360 versions had a titanfall-like delay of a couple of months. hell, i wouldn't be too surprised at this point if the 360 version got cancelled or if last gen versions were farmed out as down-ports

Indeed, "gimped" is kind of a harsh term to use. Yes it is 1080p 60 fps and that is certainly no small feat. But there are issues that hamper the visuals a lot imho. AA is not up to par, even at 1080p there are lots of jaggies, but most of all the LOD/pop in issues are almost impossible to ignore.

I still hope that with the way sales of GZ went, KP will focus more on next gen systems and will eventually iron out issues such as pop in. Thats all I want really. To get rid of that pop in.
