I like how Ground Zeroes gets better the more you play it. It was my mission to get 100% in the game but the first few minutes made me think this would be a lot harder than I thought. I had trouble headshotting guys with the tranq gun who were barely a few meters away. Guards spotted me all the time and it took me 45 minutes just to complete the first mission. Got like a D rank or something.

With most games, the mechanics either click with me or they don't. In this case however... I felt a strange urge to keep playing. For every mistake I made, I learned more about the game. Discovered new routes. Started getting better at aiming and was suddenly capable of headshotting guards at like 30m. Started to learn how to better lure guards and cover my tracks.

And the great thing about it all is when you finally have a good understanding of the map and its potential. When you have wandered around so long, you know every detail of the base. That's when I started completing extra ops in just a few minutes. Hell, I loved being able to plant C4 on the AA in one of the extra ops, make sure all nearby guards are tranqed and then use said AA to destroy the other two on the side of the map. Because I knew about the armored vehicle, I planted some C4 on the road near chopper extraction point. My chopper would already be on its way when the vehicle appears and I can just blow it up from a safe distance. Meanwhile, base is under high alert but I'm already entering my chopper. Only took like two or three minutes.

It's great to compare that to the first few hours of the game where I spent way too long completing missions. You gradually get better at the game, learn more about its capabilities and it's just a lot of fun. Can't wait for TPP.

Dawg, you should use first person view when aiming if the over the shoulder crosshair isn't red. Sometimes that shoulder view can be wonky unless you're really close. FPV, however, works like a charm.

Agreed, 100%. Considering how small Ground Zeroes is (in relation to The Phantom Pain), I was impressed by the amount of options the game made available to the player. So many ways to tackle missions - no matter how simple or complex. The Phantom Pain is going to be amazing, man; and I can't wait, either.

Agreed. THe game just gets better the more you play it. But i appreciate all the different scenarios. Like if you go for Paz first you will encounter some type of meeting just outside of where she is at. Very unnerving situation there. Also, you can tag like 10 soldiers in there together. I think they were up to no good.

Also.. the first time i played it i evacuated everyone first before chico. when the cutscene played it was weird, cuz the guys next door where not making a fuzz, so snake looking up and tension was weird haha i was, "what you looking at over there?"

I hope they make it so that the trucks when you drive them you are harder to be spotted.

aaaaaaaaand... i just love the combat in the game. from cqc to just gunning is fun. it just feels right. SO if i do get into a gun fight i am having as much fun as trying to be sneaky. great game.

what the new one has in store... i have no idea... but i am looking way forward to it, and i am so hyped, that everytime i see something mgs related i have to play some GZ and watch their demo and trailers again. more than once :D

Changing to first person view is actually the reason I suddenly got better :P

Yeah, that scene if you rescue the POW's first plays out differently. Instead you'll see some headlights as if a truck is rolling by.

Yep, FPV will turn you into an expert with headshots.

LOL

And I know MGS is known for long cutscenes. And depending on the game that either bothers me or it doesn't. MGS4's cutscenes were annoying and I didn't like the style. GZ's cutscenes, and the little I've seen of TPP, are really well done and intriguing, so they don't annoy me.

To be fair MGS4 relied heavily (too heavily) on fan service/wank to deliver its painfully written, drawn out story and so as an entry point into the series a lot of the references and relationships would be lost on you. It does spend way, way too much time on cutscenes though and it gets worse as you progress.

In any event, welcome (back) to the MGSV hype chopper!

Who knows, I could end up hating it. I thought I'd like Peace Walker and MGS4, too.

I actually liked the cutscenes more so as I progressed. Granted it was hit or miss more so than not, they were still quite good, minus the long drawn out bits.

My man! (Not my first, though.) I love MGS4 and love Peace Walker. I've put thousands of hours into the latter and pretty much everyone around here hates it. We like what we like.

MGS4 -> MGS1 -> MGS2 -> RISING -> MGS3 -> GROUND ZEROES

This is basically how I played the franchise.

That's one hell of a way to play through the series! I would have loved to read your impressions as you played through them in that order. Hey, did you ever play Peace Walker? Didn't see it on the list, and had to ask!

No :( Kinda hoping Kojima will release another collection on PS4, lol.

Bwahahaha, that's too funny. Good job man!

:lol

No seriously, i will go Venom on Kojima's ass if Hayter is not in MGSV but i don't need to because he will be in voicing Solid Snake

I read a lot about the story, watched some youtube playthroughs and most cassettes... but yeah, it'll never be the same as playing the actual thing.

This is gold though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKJekzRHiUU

you should correct this man. plenty of time for you to play PW. So many versions too. psp. on the vita and the 2 HD collections on PS3. Worth the play.

i can understand people watching games when they are short of time. but its never the same. you have to experience it.

an interesting fact, i have played all mgs games more than once, except for MGS4. and i mean a complete playthrough. mgs1 i lost count. and my fav mgs is mgs3. and, i hate Raiden with a burning passion.

what about u guys?

So I asked this in the MGS community thread but didn't really get an answer. I'm playing through MGS for the first time and I'm up to MGS4 ATM. What's the go with Portable Ops? Is it worth playing before Peace Walker? Is it cannon? Or should I just ignore it.

I don't think so. I would just ignore it if you just want to go through the story.

It's a shame PW didn't get a vita port. Sold my PS3 a while ago. Just can't go back now. Maybe PW will be available via Playstation Now? That would be an option.

And yeah, MGS3 is definitely my favourite game.

You can play PW on the vita. Just get it through the store. Its not the HD version from the ps3. But its the original game. Plus, you have the second joystick as well.

MGS1 -- at least a dozen times
MGS2 -- probably 5-6 times
MGS3 -- 5 times
MGS4 -- 3 times
PW -- 2 times, but this is kind of skewed by the replability of the missions within the save. i've put at least 70+ hours into the game

if TPP is really what it looks like (ground zeroes meets peace walker) -- i'll definitely put more than 100 hours into it

it's still a shame there is no native version. the PSP version on vita can look pretty rough. the res-bump would have been nice. also, the cross-save/transfarring from PS3 to Vita and requires extra steps and you have to first create your save on the ps3 in order to earn trophies (which do not pop on the vita obviously).

What about GZ? i think i found myself playing that here and there. I must have put over 15 hrs of playtime already into it. Maybe even more. I don't think there is a time tracker, is there?

Yea.. its really too bad that they didn't release the HD version of PW on the vita. That made me sad when i went back to it. It doesn't look too bad... better than some native Vita games tbh.

if you go into play records, you can get your time spent in missions in GZ. it's split up by difficulty, but you'd just have to add them together.

i'm up to 27 hours in GZ
