Metal Gear Solid V Will not Have a Preload on Steam

It's no longer preload when you can simply download and play the game. There's no preload. That's for sure. The game unlocks at NZ time.

It doesn't necessarily mean a change of heart is required, it may actually be this way as has been the case with other games, it could be just the community manager not being able to get any accurate information.

It's Valve that has to change release states. The unlock time doesn't change unless the publisher asks Valve to change it, but, like retail keys, these requests are actioned manually and so the timer isn't going to be accurate in cases where the request was made close to the desired unlock time. This is also why some games don't release/unlock the moment they were supposed to -- it's not an automated process, which is why publishers can't just handle release state changes themselves using the Steam Partners frontend.

words that kill

hopefully this is the final line on release, but i expect it to flip flop all over again tomorrow

please, Robert. I'm confident that this is final though.

EDIT; never mind. gonna just assume it's 1 PM EST on 9/1 to just keep my expectations in check. JUST IN CASE

That is still something I'm not sure of, but looking through his previous tweets this will not be the case. Perhaps the pre-order version is different to the release version, so there might be a period where the pre-order version goes down and is replaced with the one without bonuses..... who knows...

It isn't just "pre-load" according to his later tweet after that -

@popcicle so does pre-order allow you to download and play anytime after 12am NZ time or is it a preload until 10am 9/1?

@haggardgolem you should be able to play as well

So that's 1pm GMT on Monday?

I'm still not clear on the difference. I got the NVIDIA code and activated it on steam so it's in my library. Am I included in the Monday crew?

Anybody who owns the game will be able to play it if it unlocks worldwide or at least pre-load it if it unlocks in NZ ahead of other regions (it'll also be playable with the help of VPN).

So it's...kinda preload?

If what he's saying turns out to be true, it's better than a preload if you have a fast enough connection. If my DL starts at midnight NZ time, I'll be able to play mid-morning Monday Pacific (Arizona) time. If it doesn't actually unlock until 10 the next day, that's some hot garbage.

Yes you are, you also get all the preorder dlc too.

Yup.

If you have the game in your inventory you're on New Zealand time. If you want the day 1 pre order content you're on Pacific Time.

Awesome! Thanks duders. Anybody know when Konami servers go up to be able to import GZ saves?

hopefully the servers should be up by then to allow for the data transfer. it'd be a ridiculous caveat if they weren't

Twist: The game unlocks worldwide at midnight NZ local time but the transfer servers remain offline until 10am PT.

Really bizarre that I have to keep saying this; PC OFFICIAL release time is 10 AM PT 9/1. For pre-purchase you can DL as early as 12 AM NZ

Then stop flip-flopping on your goddamn statements!

Listen, I am appreciative that the PC version got bumped up for a 9/1 release, but this 8/31 NZ time or 9/1 10am PT thing has gotten really old the past week. It's either "IT'S HAPPENING! GET ON THE TRAIN MASTER RACE!" one day, or "It's not happening. What were you expecting?" 12 hours later.

Robert Peeler rivals Terry Funk when it comes to changing his mind.

I think the issue really is that Robert doesn't know what is common to Steam users in how games launch. His initial tweets discussed this as being normal to Steam users, which I'm pretty sure it isn't, and that in turn with contradicting statements of what we expect on the one and and don't expect on the other, then poorly communicated anyway, just leads people all over the place

So let me get this straight.

The game will unlock for sure on New Zealand at midnight Tuesday right???

But we dont know if its a region unlock or worldwide? If its worldwide, EST and CST should be able to play it on Monday in the morning correct?

Should be able to download and play it at 8 PM EST.

Peeler's latest comment seems to suggest that the game will be pre-loadable come midnight the 1st in NZ but won't unlock until 10am PT.

Not sure about that, but it seems Peeler's also not so sure about that...

although that contradicts the statements about no preload, and the ones he made about playing the game potential before console release if your connection is good

and then we're back at square one, scratching our heads

Im pretty sure there's like...20 hours difference between NZ and PT. So either it's playable early via NZ VPN, or it's preloadable. Does Konami even know what's going on lol?

The way I interpret it is that NZ time is 1sept in NZ, thus unlocks. 10AM PT is the time the game stops being a preorder.

Pre-order subs are replaced with their post-release equivalents when a game unlocks. Konami, however, seems to be under the impression that "store update" means "the one time of the day Valve changes things on the store".

robert made that last tweet about the NZ release his pinned post on twitter, so i guess that's the official line on things for now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Until I have the game downloading, I'm just going to assume that 1pm EST / 10am PST on the 1st is the release time.

8/31 5AM Pacific release, pre-order benefits last until 10 AM Pacific 9/1.

Ironic he is getting frustrated with fans confused by his ridiculous handling of this information.

I'm with Jase on this one, hope for an 8/31 release, but expect and 9/1 release.
