megadeth.
*leaves thread*
Ok you got the right idea, but come on you can't be a Megadeth fan without appreciating one of these bands. Dave Mustaine sold drugs and got paid in Priest and Maiden albums when he was young. He learned guitar by speeding the albums up and following along. He is just that fucking awesome!

What a conundrum. On one hand I like more of Iron Maiden's songs than Judas Priest's, but then again Judas Priest released Painkiller which takes a big giant one on all of Maiden's albums.

I gotta say, I never knew Painkiller was held in such high regard or even classified as a favorite out of their whole catalog to some of you younger metalheads. A Touch of Evil was a good song, and would of been at home on any of their earlier classic albums,(or at least Turbo), but thats really the lone bright spot on the album for me. It just felt that they were trying to follow the current trend in metal at the time. Where as it felt authentic when Metallica, Slayer and Megadeath etc. were going in that direction, with Priest it just felt forced. Oh well, just my opinion.

Regarding Metallica vs Megadeth, it's a tough call. I like far more Metallica songs, but I almost find it painful to listen to Lars' appalling drumming.

Here's what I'll do for you. Metallica can win, but only because they have a legion of great tribute bands who play their music better than they can themselves. By which I mean usually with sub-standard vocals, bass and guitar; but with the deficit recovered via vastly superior percussion.

And before someone makes a new thread, you should all know that Slayer are ruined for me by Tom Arya's vocals but I love their music, so they'd win the battle against, say, Testament via the tribute band trump card.

Also, Bathory is better than Venom, but they're both vastly overrated. And Mercyful Fate is better than King Diamond, but as both bands are amazing I go back and forth on this.

I'm actually with you on this one. I don't understand the Painkiller love -- but I'm guessing its a generational thing. I thought from a complete album, British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance were better (in the "newer" albums -- the 70s stuff is good, but I kinda feel its somewhat different compared to other offerings, in the same way pre-Bruce Maiden was -- similar sound but not the "recognizable" sound).

I liked Night Crawler, but that's about it...again, its ultimately about personal taste.

Maiden, easily. Their first 5 albums are absolutely spectacular.

Iron Maiden
Killers
The Number of the Beast
Piece of Mind
Powerslave

All classics.

I'm not really a big fan of metal but I have pretty much every album by Maiden.

So yeah, I vote for them. Though I would imagine it's very close if you're a big fan of the genre.

Yeah I guess so. Also, more than any other music genre, metal is a young mans game for musicians. After a certain age it just becomes uncomfortable watching someone try to be relevant still. I was just sad seeing the genre that they had a large part in defining pass them by, while watching them try to hang on to their glory days.

the only thing that could be called bad about painkiller is the juvenile & silly lyrics, but i think it adds to the albums appeal, or at least i enjoy how dumb the music is, crazy solos, halford screaming for vengeance, and scott travis' insane drumming, my favorite tracks on there are between the hammer and the anvil and hell patrol

It's so fucking close but.. I have to give it to Maiden, they have a special place in my heart.
although Judas Priest is my favourite metal band after Maiden and i have most of their records on vinyl.

Both Nostradamus and A Matter of Life and Death are horrible. Horrible.
So no, not a joke post. Currently both bands are terrible.

A Matter of Life and Death is far from horrible. I like every song off that album and would put it among my top favourites.

What? That is completely contrary to metal history. Judas Priest with Painkiller was thought to have been out of step and not following where metal was going and instead repeating their sound which became unpopular. The 20th anniversary Judas Priest documentary video talks about it. Essentially no one cared about Priest anymore when that album came out as most fans had moved on to Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, and Pantera.
