I place it even higher than Super and I hope that this new installment will push even further than Zero Mission.

I would also say that (its my favourite Metroid game), but you know, they will come after me with fire and pitchforks.

That doesn't feel like Metroid...at all. Very much looking forward to the finished product though, I'm just afraid that the story is gonna really get in the way of exploration.

I agree. I think the metroid community is in for another divisionary period much like after metroid prime following the 2d games. Some people will love this new game, a loud hardcore minority will hate it.

Either way, as long as it's a quality release I look forward to it.

I only got to the bottom of page one, but assuming the other 13-ish pages are the same, this is an extremely depressing thread filled with people somehow missing the point of Metroid.

Other M looks awesome. This site, however, does not. Get this bullshit Nobou Uematsu crap out of here. This song makes me question this entire project. Also,

First Metroid game to interest me.

It looks like this series is finally getting the heart it has been lacking.
This is the dumbest complete thought ever conceived.

Love the fact that it appears to be 2.5D (hopefully they ditch the 3D portions all together). Not so excited about the story because, well...I don't really give a rat's ass about Samus or her maternal instincts. Just let me blast the bug guts out of some aliens and let me feel like a badass and I'm game.

Fingers crossed that the story is skippable.

EDIT: Oh yeah, if the creator wants the story to make me cry or some bullshit like that, I'm never buying another Metroid title again. I cringe every time a developer so much as mentions the word "cry".

So far, I've only disliked its sterile look in cutscenes (and I doubt those will change, unfortunately). The story might also be something to worry about, but it's too early to tell.

Story makes me angry!

what the hell? :lol

Hmmm... I loved Super Metroid and all of the 2D metroids, I love Metroid Prime, and even with the story aspects, i'm really looking forward to Other M! I can see why a lot of the purists are upset with the story aspects, and I was a little worried too, but after listening to the music on the site, say, about 20 times i'm starting to see how tragic flashbacks of Samus' past can actually help the immersion factor of the game in the end.

At this point, the inclusion of story doesn't bother me - Metroid has continually had little to no story, and if delivered well, I am looking forward to an emotional and disturbing undertone to the story for a unique take on the Metroid formula. However - the one thing I am worried about is the game play aspects... the trailer makes everything look awesome, but when you really inspect it you can't help but wonder if the pacing will be ruined by TOO much action in, from the looks of it, an almost beat-em-up/light-gun shooter type of progression style...

I'm probably wrong which is good, but I hope the pacing stays true to the open-ended exploration of past Metroid titles.

Don't know if anything will come from this, but it was just announced that Sakamoto will present a talk at GDC titled 'From Metroid to Tomodachi Collection to WarioWare: Different Approaches for Different Audiences'.

I doubt we'll see any more of Other M, sadly.
We'll probably have to wait for E3.

I bet we'll get info sooner than that, at least from Japan.

In a Metroid game, yeah, it kinda does. Fusion's story was crap. Adam sucks. The metroid reveals were awesome, but all of the dialog scenes could have been cut and they would've carried the same impact.

After reading the Metroid comic I thought this character and her universe have all in all a pretty amazing narrative potential, and I'm very interested in seeing what Sakamoto will be able to tell and how.
I think Metroid Prime 3 did a far worse job as regards plot and storytelling, with all those cliched, cringe-worthy, boring npcs. I'm glad the mutants turned out to be at least good bosses to shoot at, but I think that that having characters like that "admiral" which ordered Samus to babysit a military fleet in order to secure rightful, progressist, alien friendly human dominance over the galaxy ecc. ecc. ecc. was the exact opposite of what the Metroid spirit should be composed with.

I'm a fan of the Metroid, Metroid II, Super Metroid, and to a certain extent, Metroid Prime (basically everything but Fusion and Prime 2) methods of telling a story: a basic intro and a basic outro setting up and then ending the game. I don't mind certain parts of Zero Mission where there was a short cutscene with no dialog. I thought that was fine, but anything more than that seems unnecessary.

To me, it's like adding story to a Mario game. But I can see where if I continue this conversation, I'll just end up pissing people off, so I'll just leave it at that.

Super Metroid's baby Metroid was heartfelt and moving. The plight of the Chozo Civilisation of Talon IV, told through their ruilns and relics, gave the world a tragic depth. Regaining the Power Suit in Zero Mission after being so vulnerable, is a moment of absolute reward and accomplishment.

Games do not need cutscenes, forced story and excess dialogue to have "heart".

Hell, Rhythm Heaven had more heart than most games.

I'm starting to like this idea less and less. I told my friends about the website and how it had sad piano music and how it seemed like they were trying to introduce an emotional story to a Metroid game. My one friend's response:

"I don't need to know anything about Samus other than she has a power suit and an arm cannon, and she shoots aliens. That's it."

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to agree. I don't replay Super Metroid, Zero Mission, Fusion, Prime 1/2 over and over again because of how great the story is and how much I learned about Samus as a character. I keep thinking adding a story to the game beyond what already exists in current Metroid games could be like taking the most delicious steak in the world, and then putting a big thick layer of frosting on it. I didn't ask for the frosting on my steak, and I'll just end up scraping it off, hoping none of the frosting flavor was absorbed into the meat.

Also, I don't think there's a thread for sweet statues and other game stuff, so I'll post this here because I wanted to tell someone and this is a Metroid thread.

I just bought this:

Well, although I'm apprehensive, I can at least respect their decision to try taking it a new direction. FPS seemed horrible at first also, and look how that turned out.
At the end of the day, if Other M is lackluster, well, it was an experiment, one that didn't pan out, but was interesting nonetheless.

This isn't in place of another Metroid game, you know. Retro wasn't making a Prime 4 until Sakamoto demanded they stop working on it.

If this idea is utterly abhorrent to you, you can ignore the game.

Actually, I can't stop listening to the music from the website. It's so sad that it reflects back to the manga that I've read. And that image...makes the game feel so mature, which is a good thing imo. At the same time, I really like the title font.

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/02/03/sakamoto_talks_metroid/

Said Sakamoto, "This project between three companies, which we call Project M, is progressing extremely well."

"This Metroid is being developed with the aim of the ideal form of the old Metroid," said Sakamoto. More intriguingly, he said "It's a game that can be realized because of the Wii."

Famitsu pointed out that Metroid is more successful overseas than in Japan. Sakamoto admitted that this is the case, but added, "However, different from the rest of the series, this time we're strongly depicting the human side of Samus through such things as movies. She's a strong woman, but she also has a fragile side. We want to make a game whose charms can be felt from the story areas and these human touches as well. It's an action game, but it's capable of having a clear emotional side."

Sakamoto hopes to release the game this year, something that Nintendo confirmed last week.

While Japan may not have the largest Metroid fanbase, one of Sakamoto's other titles did end up being a massive hit last year. Sakamoto was producer on Friend Collection :lol , which has sold over two million units and shows no sign of letting up.

Regarding this title, Sakamoto said, "A lot of people are playing it, so we're planning a lot of things. We haven't clearly finalized a followup or anything, but we'd like to do some new things."
My expectations are kind low because of Metroid's lonesome feeling, but let's see what Other M has to offer, it sure is different.

They are making Samus a tsundere, aren't they?

Oh god.

Personally I don't mind them focusing on Samus' character this time around. They chose not to for about two decades, not having more of the same wouldn't hurt.

You know, I'm just not going to expect the typical Metroid experience. I certainly hope this isn't a new direction for the series, and that a traditional Metroid Dread somehow still exists (however unlikely), but that doesn't mean this can't be good. So I hope for the best.

Samus doesn't have a fragile side, for crying out loud! She has small glimpses of humanity, but if she's going to be all emo in this one, do not know if want. She's like Master Chief (or the other way around), all business and no time for pointless emotions.

Anyway, any confirmation of it being 3D or 2D? I wish it was 3D so I can finally play A 3rd-person 3D Metroid game.

I don't think there was ever a time when it wasn't 3D.

If that was the case, she wouldn't have let the baby metroid live.

Ridley killed her mother. Her father blew himself up to kill some Space Pirates. [/nerd]

I think this is a good move. It'll give us a background so that we can understand her motivations behind becoming a bounty hunter and such(well the manga gives us some details on her motivations but it'd be nice to see it in 3D and animated).

KevinCow said:

In her defense, it's not that she let it live as much as that damn baby metroid seemed to be immune to every weapon she fired in its general direction. And I fired EVERYTHING.

Thus "small glimpses of humanity". She didn't go "OMG KAWAIIIIIIIIIII~". Hopefully Team Ninja's Samus won't either.

It's not Team Ninja's Samus.
Sakamoto is still fully in charge of the story and the progression of the game.
TN is basically just doing the engine and a bit of the combat.

Japan, Nintendo, Sakamoto, Team Ninja... I don't trust anyone involved to make a strong female character, let alone one that "also has a fragile side".

I don't know. Shiek was a strong female character, and she had a fragile side too.

That vulnerability is what makes a female character so great though. Without that, you just have this hardcore female that is invicible in battle that nobody cares about

If Team Ninja's in charge of the graphics/modelling, i wonder how big they made her boobs before someone at Nintendo said something.

Metroid is really the only of Nintendo's big franchises that attempts to tie all the games stories into a cohesive narrative.

Probably my favorite scene of the whole series is when you are going through the ruins of the end of the first Metroid in the beginning of Super.
