But I didn't have a problem with Samus's tone, considering both her character and that she was retelling a rather traumatic experience.
if it was so traumatic why was there no emotion in her voice? the words were just clinically spoken completely deadpan like she was reading her weekly shopping list.

when i first saw the video i thought maybe it was some sort of joke where a fan had dubbed the voice. then i had the horrible realisation that it was legit.

the people who don't care about the voice acting are fine by me. ultimately it's the gameplay that will matter. if the game was voiced be iwata and miyamoto, but the gameplay still held up i'd pay for and play the game happily.

but the people who think the voice acting is fine or actually good, boggle my mind. i can only imagine the excitement has blown a fuse in their brain and are unable to perceive the awful voice acting or i've somehow slipped into bizarro world. it really is that bad.

I think they're doing their hardest to make her come across as some kind of emotionless mercenary type. Like the equivalent to a "..." character, except with voice acting. To be quite honest, I wouldn't mind this and would vastly prefer it to a "What am I fighting foooooooooooooooooooooooooor????" type of character.

I really hate the overly cinematic approach to this, though. I always thought the "screw making games, let's make MOVIES!" mindset was something Nintendo was heavily opposed to and now it's screwing with Metroid.

I'm an anti-believer for this game. I bashed it to hell after the initial reveal. But I like the VA. I definately felt that it was some sort of out-of-body moment for Samus due to the tone of her voice or whatever. And I just love the visuals. Not too overboard. Sleek and shiny.

Sure. And it's awesome that we got the footage at all. It just emanates a certain unfamiliarity with the equipment if you give your camera a roll when all you needed was a pitch. Frustrating.

Like both, just dont see Samus as an aggressive tough chick stereotype. I agree with someone more like Ripley.

What if she's retelling her story while in hypnosis or something? Some scientist has her hooked up to a machine so she can relive her memories, that or she's just emotionally detached after all the shit that happened to her.

Holy shit, footage!

That looked pretty great.

Good CG, was good to watch.

Her voice... sounds a bit monotone, but I'm not particularly disliking it.

She has a good face, IMO. Way better than the Echoes shit. Brawl was alright, but had a young boy's face.

Voice delivery by supporting cast was okay. Her monologue was interesting, but a bit too... poetic.

The way she put her suit on reminded me of Sailor Moon... :( Even though it's CrystalFlash-like.

All in all, good show!

Sure it does. Samus is tiredly looking back on her wearying experiences and trying to come to terms with them. An even, contemplative voice is more befitting a woman of her stature and experience.

And what do you expect Samus to sound like? It's not so light that she sounds like a dainty little girl and not so heavy that she sounds butch, but enough to keep her sounding like a well rounded person. Her character isn't very complex, so conversely, they have to be careful not to imply it through vocalization and complex acting.

A contemplative voice befitting of a woman of her stature and experience!?!??! :lol
and :lol at all of those who think Samus sounding the way she does is a deliberate choice. Its just bad delivery!

It sounds like someone, anyone - any old female, reading a piece of paper in a sound studio. It barely qualifies as acting because it does not, in any way, sound like a voice actress convincingly retelling what happened since Super Metroid. Like someone else has said, it sounds as though she'd been given no context, and didn't know what the fuck she was talking about.

This isn't a "haters gonna hate" thing. I love every other Metroid game, and this seriously disappoints me.

People willfully accepting shit like this and making excuses for it is the reason we have so much shitty voice work in games. I wish people had fucking standards. I certainly wish Nintendo / Tecmo did.

Games like Mass Effect and Uncharted 1/2 have set new benchmarks for good voice work - games like Metal Gear Solid (although I love David Hayter obviously) sound fucking terrible in comparison - like Saturday morning cartoons, and possibly worse.

I hope feedback reaches Nintendo in time for them to change things. I will doubtless play and love the game regardless but the VA is pants from what I've heard in that clip. Horrible!

Yeah, can't have a female carbon-based lifeform transform in a Japanese game without the classic Magical Girl transformation sequence, I suppose. It's a common anime trope, you'll learn to accept it eventually.

I get the feeling Team Ninja and Nintendo are currently working on one. :-P

I dont like Samus voice, but I dont mind the lines, the majority of games are like that.
Also the Mother line, I dont find it strange, she called her like that in the Manga, because she was her "adoptive mother".
I really hope we have Spanish voice acting like in Fire Emblem and have the better game.
Maybe, seeing Nintendo wanting a cinematic experience they are going to dub it to different languages, so that gives me hope. Im sure theres no time to change the voice acting, but would like to hear better voice actors when the game realeases, maybe they do with all the press saying that the acting is shit.

Well, the CG sure is purdy. It's odd that they put a mole on her face though, what a weird characteristic to add.

Sakamoto said she always had it, but no one drew it.

HONEY FLASH!!

Samus is like a mix of Sarah Conner and Ripley.

She's somewhat cold and serious most of the time, yet is very caring of those close to her. That sounds more like Sarah actually.

... Am I the only person who finds the transformation sequence more reminiscent to tokusatsu series like the Kamen Rider or the Metal Hero franchises? Seriously?

Samus is feeling them hormones acting up. Is the 'ol biological clock ticking faster?
Other M --> Mother

Now you know why the game is called like that :P It's about Samus's mother feelings! Isn't it a dream come true?

Well pardon me if it invokes my fond childhood memories of watching หนุมาน พบ 5 ไอ้มดแดง with my father.

On topic, about Samus's new VA... Well, at least she doesn't sound like a smoker like Alesia Glidewell's portrayal of her in Brawl. The graphics are pretty nice (I'm not much of a graphics whore to begin with) and seems to replicate the art style of Super. Not much else to say here, so good day.

Also MNC, what heels? I didn't see any?

After watching that scene, it is ridiculously clear that Samus need not make a damn sound other than a death cry upon being defeated. What a way to kill the mood :lol

Well part of it is that I figured she would look more muscular and tough than what wound up happening with Zero Suit stuff going on.

SAMUS DIED COMPLETELY NAKED

Director Mr. Sakamoto got his image of Samus Aran
from actress Kim Bassinger.
From the film The Getaway (CIC Picture Video 8 Month Rental)
(c) 1994 Victory Company of Japan, Ltd. All rights reserved.

Which person is the image closest to; was there someone specific?

Sakamoto: Personally, I like Kim Bassinger from 9 1/2 Weeks and My Stepmother is an Alien.

Osawa: Yeah, I see that. When Samus gets hit, her voice sounds like her.

What about when she dies?

Osawa: In the first phase of development, she was naked. You can see her naked for one frame. We put a bathing suit on her, but there was a subliminal effect for just an instant when you could see her naked for one frame.

Sakamoto: She was only naked for one second out of sixty minutes. However, when we stopped and thought about it for a moment, we had to stop because this sort of thing is terrible in America. (Laughs)

Osawa: It was dangerous, but Yamane* put clothes on her.

Yamamoto: We used the voice more carefully. When she dies, Hamano did the voice, but it sounded too sexual so we couldn't use it.

Hamano: When we sampled in front of the mic, I spoke a number of times. I wasn't any good and completely failed.

Yamamoto: I have to say it was a failure. (Laughs)

Sakamoto: I have a special version of the ROM with that in there. (Laughs)

Sakamoto: *laughs*

Also:

Secret of Samus that only I know: I know where Samus's beauty mark is.

Also, regarding the "bounty hunter" debate from earlier, it's odd because there's a scene in the manga where, after a timeskip following Samus's leaving the Federation police/investigative force/whatever, she saves the head of the parliament from a Pirate monster, but right before she blasts it she demands a bounty from Adam.

Wat!?

Saying stuff in Other-M is good because that's how Sakamoto intended it to be is like saying the Star Wars prequels are good because that's how Lucas intended them to be. Just saying.

I like what I see of Other-M so far. Except for that VA but it's no deal-breaker.

George Lucas never intended the original trilogy to be like the prequels. Matter of fact he intended the prequels to be like the prequels, partially because he always thought that the prequels should be about politics. The prequel's flaws come from the writing and acting rather than what it was "intended" to be. For Other M I just wish they'd replaced Samus' voice actor with the one from Brawl.

For Metroid all of this bullshit about complaining about the "sexualization" of Samus as explained earlier is pretty much a staple in the series. If you complain about it, you probably don't have much experience with Metroid in the first place. The first game had her in a bikini for fuck's sake, and people complain about her putting a fullbody suit on? A bikini can be just as tight as the Zero Suit, especially since tight clothing is fashionable to Samus as people can see in the form of the Super Metroid and Fusion ending rewards. This is really getting out of hand in how much people are complaining about this.

I kinda like the Sakomoto backlash :lol

Last year he was praised as a god and all old school Metroid fans were like "Sakomoto can do no wrong, Fuck Retro!".

Poor Anihawk :(

That's what Sakamoto looks like!?

Edit: Well ofcourse that's a photo from 1994.

That manga is both "definitive canon" and pretty recent, correct? It was probably developed SINCE Retro Studios back and forth discussions for Metroid Prime (2?). Maybe they had time to think about the concept of Samus collecting bounties... and realized that the character just doesn't work without it.

....or Perhaps Retro Studios and that interview misrepresented how the creators see it. Perhaps even NoJ has always agreed that Samus gets paid for her owrk... but she certainly isn't in it "all for the money". You could almost imagine Retro Studios trying to make Samus into a GTA character, running around doing immoral killing work for money. That would understandably not be true to Samus either. She clearly "cares" about the wellbeing of the universe and such. Perhaps she is a "bounty hunter with a heart of gold", which in fact confused Retro... who had previously thought in terms of "bounty hunter = hired gun doing anything for a dollar".

bounty hunting isn't really immoral. shit, we have bounty hunters today. the whole bounty hunter thing started before Retro ever worked on the Metroid series. the problem lyed with NCL calling Samus a bounty hunter when she really doesn't hunt bounty heads. she is more of a mercenary (which is what you are describing in your last sentence).

Just to make things straight: I did not have anything to do with uploading that video to youtube. I did not film the video, and did not send it to anyone, so this is absolutely in some other poor soul's hands.

It's needless to say that Nintendo is ...not pleased.

I started reading through the Metroid manga right now... and I think you're right. She's not a bounty hunter, she's a mercenary...

Clearly the only issue here is that "bounty hunter" is a misnomer in the case of Samus. As I said a few pages back, I think that NCL used the English term "bounty hunter", probably in reference to its use in Star Wars for characters like space-warrior-for-hire Boba Fett, not quite understanding that "bounty" implies hunting down specific targets for money.

I expected something way more ridiculous than what I got from that video, given what people have been saying.

This game should be pretty great. Might be at the expense of hypersensitive metroid fans, but that's no big deal! ahuahuahuahua.

You are crazy. Metroid is one of the few video game properties that could actually be a great movie.

Just gotta put it in the right hands.

Nope, because honestly the very first thing I thought about was Kuuga's transformation. Minus the arm waving, of course.

As for the opening, it was pretty cool. The voice acting wasn't great, but I've put up with worse in games. Now can a brother get some gameplay footage, Nintendo?

Well, bounty hunting can mean alot of things. In older times, there were bounties on the heads of wolves and that for every wolf you brought in, you'd get a payment. Perhaps there's a similar program in place for the genocide of the Space Pirates. Furthermore, while the specific wording would make Samus a mercenary, by the vernacular of her time she's called a bounty hunter.

I doubt it, that was recorded probably the same time Geoff asked about Metroid and Reggie gave him basically "yeah it'll be here."
Or, it could be Nintendo doing what they did with the Zelda pic and just releasing the leaked video.

Well she was in a bikini in Metroid so I know this isn't new. I just thought she looked tougher in SM than what she wound up looking like in the rest of the series.
