I kinda like the Sakomoto backlash :lol

Last year he was praised as a god and all old school Metroid fans were like "Sakomoto can do no wrong, Fuck Retro!".

Poor Anihawk :(

I was always concerned about giving her a voice and making the series more cinematic, but I think the gameplay should be just fine. Good, even, at the very least.

So apparently Reggie is going to be on the next GTTV with "surprises" maybe we will get some real video rather than crappy cam.

I doubt it, that was recorded probably the same time Geoff asked about Metroid and Reggie gave him basically "yeah it'll be here."

Well I was thinking that myself, but the video was put up and twittered(tweeted?) about like 8 hours later so who knows.

Well she was in a bikini in Metroid so I know this isn't new. I just thought she looked tougher in SM than what she wound up looking like in the rest of the series.
Hey Nintendo got to get off some how.

I always assumed Samus was supposed to look frail, but actually be incredibly powerful.

Nintendo Power told she had a very muscular build due to her training and blood transfusion. She looked very and athletic in Super Metroid. It's a shame she has this Barbie doll aesthetic now.

Yeah I agree about the gameplay, I wouldn't mind the story though. I've seen some shit before, won't change anything.

You are crazy. Metroid is one of the few video game properties that could actually be a great movie.
Yes, especially the morph ball mechanic.

But generally I'm still somewhat interested in how a Metroid movie could work. The Chozo and Samus' childhood have great potential for an intriguing background story.

There's more tone, but the build isn't all that different.

When I used to watch Buffy I always thought Sarah Michelle Gellar could do a good job.

I know a lot of you will hate me for this.

Secrets of Samus by the Metroid Staff:
Makoto Kano:
You can defeat SR388's Metroid Queen by entering her mouth.

Yoshio Sakamoto:
I know where Samus's beauty mark is.

Hiroyuki Kimura:
106-60-90 [Samus's Measurements]

Hirofumi Matsuoka:
Samus isn't a woman. As a matter of fact, she's actually a shemale.

Samus isn't a woman. As a matter of fact, she's actually a shemale.
As a matter of fact, she's actually a shemale.
she's actually a shemale.
a shemale.

SURPRISE!

Also about Super Metroid:
Sakamoto: That's right, we couldn't get a proper judgment. Then, just before the game was complete, I brought it home and had my wife play it. That way, if there was any problem, I would see what direction to take. The next day, I would give directions for what I thought should be changed. Osawa: I didn't know that! (Laughs) So Mr. Sakamoto's wife was behind the instructions to correct it! Sakamoto: Well, I'm more that kind of guy. I also let my children play it.

So his wife is the one behing all the greatness of Super Metroid! :O

Well this thread took a strange turn.

I was going to mention that the sidebar to that interview on the last page said that Samus' measurements were 42-24-36, but... that seems pretty tame now.

Boys, boys, I think he was only drunk during the interview.

I hope that is one of the things they scraped and Sakamoto gave him a slap in the head for his idiocy.

And its impossible to hide that thing under the zero suit... I really hope.

I'm calling shenanigans on the shemale bit.
Maybe, but I was not the one to trick us, Im only the messenger.
http://www.metroid-database.com/index.php?g=sm&p=interview

Its funny that no one mentioned anything about it during this years even if that interview was form 1994.

silverbullet1080 said:
NVM, her dad refers to her as a girl in the manga, so I refuse to believe otherwise ;_;

Yeah, if you read the interview, they start to do jokes about sexual things and it turns very informal, something not acustomed in japanese interviews.
They were probably high in spirits, and Matsuoka was only joking.

Although Sakamoto is the one that tells things that we would see in future to come, like the more action game and the mole.

Secret of Samus that only I know: Samus isn't a woman. As a matter of fact, she's actually a shemale.

The key to this whole shemale question is right in this bolded text. It probably means that he made it up on his own and that it's not canon. At least I hope so :S

Interview said:
There are many places we haven't seen before. What other secrets are there?

Osawa: You can beat Ridley when he appears in the Colony intro...
What!?

Sakamoto: You can do it if you shoot him a hundred times.
Yamamoto: Yes, and then the Metroid in the capsule will fall

Oh, I know what missile I didn't get..also explains why I was brainfarting/confused/looking at the map a lot in Phendrana. Didn't drop down into the frozen lake where a glacier makes a hole through it and a missile is under the lake/ice. Woops.

I think someone asked if you got that one too.

If so, I wasn't thinking of the same one at all then. I don't think I shot the..stalagtite thing to break the ice (plays a cutscene) where then I just drop straight down into it, so that's why I was lost/confused in that big, tall area at Phendrana. My bad.

Im really surprised at all the comments about the VA. In comparison to actual animated movies its bad, but thats the way I have felt this entire gen. Its odd to see the complaints about VA appearing JUST NOW. I thought I was going to die playing Mass Effect and Gears and Halo and Modern Warfare. The voice acting in video games has been terrible. This shits never even been average, and with so much more of it this gen I guess Ive started to just accept that.

But I guess its good that more people are noticing it. That video was cheesy VA wise, just as bad as the rest of this gens "blockbusters". Some games even seem to go out of their way to get Hollywood professionals to do the voicing and the shit still comes out terrible. Maybe its the bad cheesy writing or maybe games just dont have the schedule and budget to refine these things the way a feature film would. But it will be a great day when this shit gets better.

So I saw the opening video...

Man, how incredibly shitty. All it was missing was a voiceover that said "STRAIGHT FROM JAPAN...THE MOST DRAMATIC STORYLINE EVER CONCEIVED."

My God, everything about this is "NIPPON NIPPON NIPPON TO THE MAX EXTREME." I'd take bald space marines over everything-must-be-surrounded-in-unexplained-beams-and-swirls any day.
This was my concerned day one over Other M but I was in the minority after E3. I knew this would come back to haunt the game. Thank you Retro for at least giving us the 3D Metroid we wanted before it went all to shit with Other M.

Awesome play last night.

I am watching your SM speed run on youtube, impressive stuff! :O

It was really bad. :(

Supposedly some folks want me to play Super horribly tonight or something, I don't know.

I wish other speedrun folks posted more here, I know of one that does (Osuwari), would be cool to get a Metroid replay thread competition or something going, what with all my thread derailing in this one.

Nintendo Power also ran a "canonical" comic in which she had purple hair and got upstaged by a male bounty hunter and a male-dominated police force.

Seriously, I don't get the "sexism" complaints that have popped up. That Zero Suit shows a hell of a lot less skin than, say, the original Metroid series from the 80s.

Wo-pah!

Oh yea. That totally looks like a muscular, well dressed woman.

I like how now that Team Ninja is involved, suddenly Samus looking exactly the same as she always has is now nitpicked as being sexualized and untrue to the source material.

I am so pumped to see more reactions like this. The best part is that I'm still probably getting a sweet game out of it!

This probably makes me obnoxious. I'll take it.

Okay, just watched this and it's not nearly as bad as most of you are making it out to be. Sure, it has the typical melodramatic dialog that plagues most games but actually the conclusion to SM was done in an interesting manner. Can't wait to see how they tie the metroid creatures back into the game.

Seriously, that crap is epic.

"Wahhh! This game looks like it comes from the same culture it always has! I'm going to burst into flames if someone doesn't cleanse it with GLORIOUS USA!"

It always has been some kind of taboo in GAF, no one want to be spoted in one side or another, but sometimes the veil falls, and reveal the real rage against the "west" or the "east".

I feel like watching some Metal Wolf Chaos vids now. :lol

In all honesty, just gimme good gameplay. I don't expect Samus to be some master storyteller, so the vid didn't bother me at all.

I think people just don't want Samus being all "I AM A WOMAN BECAUSE THE BABY" It's kinda like showing a picture of an egg with the word "egg" written underneath. We know it's an egg. You don't have to tell us again.

The voice acting is perfectly fine not counting a wooden Samus.
