Metroid Prime Hunters interview

Well, it's possible the game might come with a thumbstrap for people who have either lost their or never had one.

During the demo, we were able to see a quick overview of the options, which feature a host of control schemes, some of which use the stylus and others that use the buttons. Plus, there is the ability to adjust sensitivity and invert your look scheme. The game also supports the rumble pack. We also learned about the options you'll be able to tweak during a match.

very nice.

Wait, why would you invert your look or adjust sensitivity when you use the stylus to point and shoot? Presumably there's a button-look option I guess, but that would seem to be an artifact since we're in the TOUCH GENERATION

edit: touching is good

DS lite doesn't have a thumbstrap? The hell? That's how I play Super Mario 64 DS, and how I played Prime Hunters demo.

OOOOO YEAH!

old box. Doesn't have the online-experience waring, WiFi logo is now placed at the top-left and some of the hunters are moved a little (one on the left for sure) so they're better visible. :)

While there probably is an option to use buttons (there was in the demo), what's so strange with adjusting sensitivity and using inverted look with touch control?

lame on the no thumb strap. really odd decision. Any impressions of control been posted yet? I wanna know how most people were playing.

IGN has a summary up now including a little about the controls.

I cant wait for this game. One thing that wasnt clear in the IGN write-up, will this have the same type of online as MKDS, being able to connect and search for players not on a friends list?

I think it might be redundant to post this, but on the games news that I synced to my Palm Pilot today there was a quote from Nintendo that said the single-player game is only "slightly shorter" than Metroid Prime.

Sounds good to me!

During a match, there's no voice chatting. If you don't want to voice chat, you can pull up an on-screen PictoChat-style keyboard to send instant messengers to the one, two, or three players in your game setup before and after the match. Again, text chatting can only be done outside of the gameÂ…not that you'd have time to type much during a battle anyway.

In addition, you can send text messages by tapping on an onscreen icon and calling up a virtual keyboard. You can also check out a detailed breakdown of available games.

So the game does have a more advanced lobby system than Mario Kart. This is great news; no one seemed to point this out here though.

The thumbstrap scratched up the touchscreen too much. Get a little bit of residue on the nub (like hardened finger grease -_-) and I could hear that hideous scraping noise. Turning and weapon selection are also harder to do with the strap then with the stylus. It hurts, but the stylus is the way to go.

So the strapon hurts but the long stylus doesn't?

I wholeheartedly disagree.

Nice.. Metroid Prime Pinball, Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, Super Princess Peach, and Metroid Prime Hunters now all support the rumble pack.

Worthless support since the DS Rumble Pak is the worst Nintendo accessory in years.

interview is up at ign

theres also some more impressions from Jeremy Parish from 1up.... i dont like him, annoying and complains too much it seems

Sorry about the quality of yesterday's blog post -- it was sort of impromptu and very stream-of-consciousness, which seemed OK at the time. The main point is that Metroid Prime Hunters is very very impressive from a technical perspective. Like I said, it's proof that a Metroid 64 could have been a pretty good-looking game.

Um.. wow.

wow indeed. Knowing them, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave it away at PAX or something. Maybe have a MPH tournament, with this as the prize.

I will talk about the game itself later, but I just found this object impressive. It's three dimensional, tiny bubbles like "voxels" (remember those?) describe the entire image. These objects (along with their black case/purple velvet interior) were given to the developers when they completed First Hunt for the DS launch. So owning it makes me feel a little like a fraud, but then I gaze into its tranquil depths and the world (with all its troubles) disappears.

I tried it out and kind of liked it. It is very very subtle yes, and a tad noisy if the game sound is low, but it really isn't bad. I just wish I didn't need Metroid Pinball to own it. When will Ninty release it separately? (hopefully for real cheap)

Here's the Crystal thing that Penny Arcade won at the event.

That's awesome. I have a crystal like that but the design in it is of some buildings in Moscow, my best friend's sister got it for me (it has writing on it but it's obviously Russian, don't know what it says).

ant1532 said:
is samus in the middle of the crystal thing actually solid or just like an image on the walls?

It is indeed made of lots of tiny little bubbles, and it's a 3D model or whatever, if you look at it at different angles, it'd be just like holding a small 3D object of anything in your hand. Pretty impressive.

I want that Metroid one.

It is somehow "lasered" into the Block. Many small dots in 3D space. :]
woah.

Sega kept trying to sell a Sonic version of that type of collectable for some time, but they wanted a nice chunk of change, and it didn't even look as good as this Samus one does. Wow.

That last Multiplayer map they're playing on looks suspiciously like DM15 from Quake 3 Arena:

dm15.jpg

Which is a good thing :)

Uh, why is everyone like ZOMG over the crystal thing.. Inside my mall you can give them a picture and they will make one for you for a price and its not even that expensive.. I bet I can get a mario one made easily :lol

OK, how will people be able to play this with a thumb strap? My thumb wont reach more than half way across the touch pad. Am I missing something?

Yes. A copy of NDS for dummies.

Yeah, only Samus.

Thanks, I just wasn't sure.

That seems like a missed opportunity to me.
I'd like to try playing as other Hunters, to get a more fleshed out, more rounded story environment.

Well it could be one of the unlockables when you finish the game. But I'm personally glad they did it this way, they kept true to the Metroid franchise by making the game about Samus.
