Metroid: When will we see it again and in what form?

Let's talk some Metroid.

Nearly 3 years since Other M (lol).

Nearly 10 years since Zero Mission.

Dammit. I just want a new Metroid game.

With that being said, what do you think is next? Would they revisit Super Metroid like A Link Between Worlds? Will Retro take back control for a Wii U entry? Or is Metroid as dead as F-Zero?

Thoughts?

Next Metroid game will be Metroid All-Stars 30th Anniversary for Wii U. A disc with dumps of Metroid 1-3 and Fusion.

Please understand.

I'm fully confident that Retro Studios is working on it along with fucking Donkey Kong. I also believe a 2D "Super Metroid" like game should be out eventually.

Whenever we see it, it'll probably shaped like a ball.

But - Retro studies is working on DK right now. I can't imagine we'll hear anything more about the game until next year, possibly Christmas 2014 release earliest.

And F-Zero will never be dead. It lives on in our hearts.

Don't forget 6 years since Prime 3.

It's weird to see a game franchise with so much steam for several years, only to disappear almost entirely from the public eye. It's like Nintendo just didn't know what to do with Metroid after Fusion and the Prime games.

Hopefully we'll see a glorious return by 2015.

There were comments from a Nintendo person recently about exploring other characters in the Metroid universe, e.g. Hunters. I expect that this was a pretty heavy hint that the next Metroid is going to be less like the Prime games and more like Hunters.

3DS could use a Metroid game first. It's been quite a while since a traditional Metroid game has appeared on the handheld. Retro may show in interest in returning to Metroid after DKC Tropical Freeze, but who knows, they may get the opportunity to work on something else.

I have the feeling that we won't see Metroid for awhile.. at least not in the form I would like. Other M was obviously not the success Nintendo wished it to be so I'm guessing they're letting the franchise have a rest.

If Nintendo ever releases a new sidescrolling Metroid game... (perhaps a sequel to Metroid Fusion), I'll be the happiest man on Earth!

Since it doesnt bring money any more it will be cheap to make. So I guess a 2D or 2.5D one for the 3DS.

On a side note, I'm 3 hours in Other M and other than story/chartacters it's fantastic.

I'm not expecting anything from Nintendo after "Other M" (thank you Franchise Killer). Honestly, at this point, I gave up, and I'm waiting for other projects to be completed, such as the game mentionned by ash_ag and Ghost Song, made by resident NeoGAFer Jobbs.

New sidescroller on the 3DS. Sort of crummy looking graphics that people will complain about. Launches under the radar; it'll be pretty good but ignored by most gamers and consumers in general. More threads like these will come out where a small handful of posters have to say "We got one on the 3DS, remember?" over and over, and everyone else will say "Oh, right. I mean a real Metroid."

Supported that project right after I watched the trailer. Based on what I've seen, it's exactly what I want in a Metroid sidescroller.

I wish I knew. I expected to see something this year and we got nothing. With Nintendo these days who even knows. It could be 2-3 years before we see another Metroid game.

CTRL+F "in pog form". No results? Come on, GAF!

I imagine they're going to give it a few years so Other M fades out of the public consciousness. I think they may end up doing a 2D game until they can figure out how they want to transition into 3D again.

I say this a lot, but I think a 3rd person Metroid taking a few cues from Dead Space (1) would be wonderful. Preserve that sense of exploration with a heavy handed dose of atmosphere and adventure. I want it so much.

In fact,I'm not one to rally behind a remake, but I think remaking the orginal Metroid in this fashion would be excellent.

From a Game Informer interview with Miyamoto:
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/07/05/miyamoto-talks-zelda-pikmin-and-wii-u-development.aspx?PostPageIndex=1

What's the status of the Metroid franchise? Are there any Metroid games in development? Whether it's 3D or two dimensional?

We don't have anything that we're working on that we can discuss probably. But we've always- just as we do with all of our franchises- have people who are looking at what they can do next, even with the Metroid franchise as well. So hopefully, at some point, we'll be able to announce it.

It sounds like there are at least discussions going on. He notes there is nothing there are working on they can announce, possibly indicating something like an early prototype in creation. Now whether it will ever come into a full project is another thing but it sounds like Metroid is still definitely being looked. Who knows they may play it like DKC and have it be the game the announce closest to release date. Makes sense.

Won't be surprised if we never see it again. They might as well make Smash Bros it's own universe/franchise with unique characters: Samus, Ness, Captain Falcon, and Fox among them. I'd love for any one of those characters to see the light of day in their own new game, but they aren't what sells to Nintendo's audience anymore.

Up next on the chopping block: Pikmin. Pikmin 3 probably only exists because there was so much work done on it throughout the Wii generation, and it was only originally conceived because Nintendo probably thought it was a good idea coming off Pikmin 1 and 2 from the Gamecube generation. Then there entire primary target audience changed. Can't see any reason they'd green light another Pikmin game.

Pit is probably done for, too.

Yarn Metroid or bust.

Seriously though, give me something on the level of Super Metroid on a home console again and I'll buy a Wii U the day it get's announced.

I wouldn't hold my breath outside of VC releases, Smash Bros., and MAYBE a Prime Trilogy HD collection to "test the market".

They need a side scroller on the 3ds. It'll sell well and renew faith and interest for a wii u entry. And how about a remake of metroid 2? That game was amazing in my opinion but also needs modernizing badly.

I'm just gonna be excited for Ghost Song. lately indies are giving me a more consistent output of Metroidvania titles then Nintendo ever did. So fuck 'em.

Someone is definitely working on something right now. This is, after all, one of their strongest core franchises. However, it's really hard to say what developer is going to be the next to take a crack at it, and what form the game is going to have. The problem is that if it isn't Retro, then the FPS route is likely out of the question. In theory, I could envision Metroid as an open world third person shooter with clever platforming and puzzles.

As to when we'll probably hear about it - so far we know of Nintendo's exclusive software into the first half of 2014. Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, X and Fire Emblem X Shin Megami Tensei are all likely to come out before fall (I'm personally feeling like Mario Kart and Bayonetta are coming out in late winter to early spring and the rest around May-September).

That leaves the holiday season for 2014 empty so far. However, we do know that Nintendo is definitely working on a new Zelda for the WiiU (which apparently was almost ready to be shown at this year's E3). Furthermore, with the timing on the AC Plaza Channel, it is definitely possible we'll be seeing an AC for WiiU around December 2014. Also, there is still the Epic Yarn - style Yoshi game in development for the WiiU. In addition to that, Myamoto is currently working on a new IP which is at least conceptionally finished by now. Still, that would leave the end of 2014 fairly empty, which then begs the question: what else does the big N have in store for holiday 2014? They certainly have enough existing IPs to work with, and one should always assume that there are 1-2 projects that nobody has even the slightest idea of.

All that information combined leaves the optimistic impression that we might be looking at late 2014 to early 2015 for the next Metroid game.

You got Metroid already...in Nintendo Land.
Guess we'll have to wait one more generation for another metroid game.

Metroid Pinball Redux Edition.

A 2D sequel to Fusion on the 3DS please
understand
.

New Super Metroid with a terrible aesthetic for the 3DS.

I'd be surprised if the next game in the franchise isn't similar to that
