MGO to be region-locked

Well I made a US konami ID and signed in but I haven't gotten any farther. It pops up and gives me the message that the free character slot has been used already. I am pretty sure this method won't work so I didn't want to blindly plop down money :(

Looks like us international gamers are just screwed.

Thanks Konami.

Wow. Why didn't they just make it a host option to decide if you would like other nations to play with you or not?

Konami. Goddamn you.

Yeah it really just goes to show that in some ways they are really far behind as far as online gaming. There may be no problems with the actually game, and even the interface is workable(although there are some WTF decisions). But something like this on the infrastructure side really serves no purpose other than to hinder their game's online community. I really can't see myself playing for long when I am forced to play with random Japanese people and not my friends.

BudokaiMR2, i understand you're in japan, but what region is your mgs4 copy itself?
If it's japanese, it doesn't surprise me one bit that you can't connect to the US sites. Behaves like the beta. It was known from the start.
Hoewever if your copy is american, then indeed WTF HAPPENED KONAMI!!?

If your mgs4 is japanese as well, it doesn't surprise me at ALL that you can't connect to the US sites.

He's got a Japanese copy, but the big issue is that he and I want to play together, and I'm getting the US version.

F U I just want in on the GAF clans!

:p

But yeah, I mean sure it worked like that in the beta but that doesn't make it acceptable in any way. NINTENDO has managed to have international servers on their games, and yet Konami can't pull it off. I would have never expected something like that especailly with a BIG release like MGS4/MGO.

I'd just like to go ahead and confuse the shit out of everyone by mentioning that we have two Asia based players in the NA clan.

Edit:

I applied to the clan from inside the game, and was accepted, but not sure which region.
I'm an Asia (TW), so I guess there is some cross-region play.

What region PS3 and MGS4 do you have? This is really interesting...and weird.

Asian PS3 & Asian version of the game. I'm in Taiwan.

We also have Bigswords from Singapore

thetrin so you are in japan with a US copy?
And do you manage to connect to the US servers ?
That's the real issue here as IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE WITH THE BETA. At all.
(sorry if you guys can't play on the same servers but it was known from the start that MGO clients were localized!)

They are playing the English version though? Or is it the Japanese version?

Ok, i received my copy and can confirm the following.
Let's hope it clears up MGO retail region questions once and for all.
You play on the server matching the region of your MGS4 copy.
Someone with a US MGS4 will play on the US servers regardless of where in the world he is connecting from. There is *NO* GEO/IP LOCK on the retail version like there was on the beta <3
Someone with a JPN MGS4 copy will connect to japan servers.
It seems in HK (Asia) are 2 versions, one in english, the other in Japanese.
The english one will connect to the US servers and the japanese one to japan servers.
So importers do not fear, the GEO/IP lock has been totally disabled!

So... thread title change then?

Technically it IS region locked since people on US servers can't play against peeps on JPN or EURO servers. However it is not GEO/IP locked like the beta was. Thread title isn't misleading, rather incomplete.

Between this and the sign-up "system", its as if Konami wants to keep people out of MGO.

Can you imagine how much of a failure this would be as a separate $60 game?
