MGS Peace Walker: Must play for story purposes?

I've fallen face first in to MGS and it's insanity. I've played through 1-3, and am past the first AI boss (Pupa) in Peace Walker.

I'm not feeling it. It feels like a gigantic waste of time for me, who won't grind anything out. Does it get better? I've got 4 and Ground Zeroes to work on next, so maybe i'm just antsy. What say you, hivemind, should I just Wiki it and move on? Or is it GOAT and I am just impatient?

Honestly, you've probably seen enough. You know who Kaz is, and the basis behind how Mother Base was built. Ground Zeroes gives you a perfectly adept catch-up option, through cassette tapes.

Peace walker is one of the top 3 metal gear games, right behind 3 and 1. It is a MUST PLAY in my opinion. Play it in co-op and you'll see how amazing it is.

It's important especially for Ground Zeroes/The Phantom Pain. The boss battles are horrible in that game but if you can, power through them, I would recommend for you to keep playing. The game can be really fun especially assigning soldiers to missions and building up gadgets in Mother Base. There's also a lot of fun and wacky side missions further on.

I tried playing through Peace Walker on the Vita two times and failed miserably. It has a really slow burn and just couldn't get past the controls. It hasn't aged well.

I thought it was OK, there are some bits that are still worth getting to. I never played it in co-op and got a bit bored with it by the end though. The boss fights are terrible, just bullet sponges.

The game is EXCELLENT at teaching you how you should be playing MGS though. The increased usefulness of the disarm technique in PW will see you well in V.

I agree with all of this. I'm on my third tank now, and it is BORING.

Though, I think all of the tanks in PW is 100x better as a scary boss than Volgin was. Holy cow what a bad character lol.

Get a friend and play it co-op. IIRC, every mission allows at least two player co-op. And then get some other friends to play the bosses with you, they're mad fun.

I just really enjoyed the game. If you're not having fun just read a wiki or something for the story..

"Get a friend" is easier said than done though (lolol forever alone). A friend who has free time at the same time as you, also has a PSP/PS3 and a copy of the game, who also wants to play it with you.

Maybe this is easier for younger people (or in Japan where handheld culture is more of a thing), but as you get older playing with friends becomes rarer.

And the only fun thing I can imagine with 4 people on a boss is that it will be over 4 times quicker.

I remember beating 4 back when it came out but I remember NOTHING about it. It was basically a fever dream.

I'm just going to leave this image here and if you like what you see, keep playing.

My MGS experience was like this:

MGS1 -> MGS2 -> MGS3 -> MGS4 -> MGS:PW -> MGS:GZ, so in order of release. Skipping the Portable Ops (although I read the story before starting PW).

When I first tried PW I didn't like it. The interface was weird, the actual gameplay a mix of MGS4 and MGS3, I don't know...it didn't feel right.
I tried it again a couple of months ago and I loved it (PS3 HD version). Even the things that were originally off putting (like all the base micro management) grew on me to the point that I can't wait to see MGS:TPP's take on it.

The story is great and well worth the playthrough, IMHO.
It provides HUGE backstory information on The Boss and ties really well into MGS3 not to mention that it serves as the starting point for MGS:GZ & MGS:TPP.

But then again, if you really can't see yourself playing anymore, then definitely read the story (try to find some detailed synopsis or watch it on YT) because PW's story is very important to GZ & TPP.

Oh...CHAINGUN...whoooosh....CHAINGUN.... Hehehhe, the best voice ever. :D

I haven't started up Ground Zeroes that I bought the day it came out largely because I keep telling myself I should play this for the story stuff first.

If I have no real intention of playing with others would it still be fun to just run through on the easiest difficulty to get the story stuff or does it make it a little too lame? I generally play games one difficulty higher than default but if this has aged somewhat poorly I'm thinking it might be better to go on easy.

I felt the same as you, but saw it through to the ending of the main story, because MGS and such. Hated it even more. I can see the appeal of multiplayer, but like you, I didn't have anyone available here. Wiki the story, or better don't even do that, it's pretty stupid anyway and kinda even angered me with their handling of The Boss.

I'd recommend watching a playthrough of the game with all the codec conversations and cutscenes in tact. Not one of those movie cuts of Peace Walker. Also make sure you watch the secret ending too.

It's pretty essential stuff, also listen to a few of the more interesting codecs that the game doesn't force you to listen too, there is some interesting little tibits.

I also think peace Walker is really good and yeah it gives you a lot of set up stuff for MGS5. In fact it's the true MGS5 and the new one should have been 6.

Also playing the games in order of release is the best idea.

Honestly PW is garbage to play on your own. It's possible obviously but the coop is pretty much forced if youre new to the series or the average gamer.

If you just want story watch on youtube. Cutscenes aren't that lengthy.

Directly relates to GZ so it's worth at least knowing what happened in whatever form you prefer. I liked PW, it's an absolutely packed game with silly crossovers and a lot of experimental ideas for the franchise, many of them making onto Phantom Pain.

I had a hard time getting itnt it, and wound up really enjoying it. I recommend you give it a little more time. I played the PS3 version, if it matters. I could never get my head around the controls for the portable version. Also, I soloed the whole main story.

It was a fun experience for me. The story was not as captivating as MGS 3 but there are significant revelations I never saw coming
such the return of The Boss. Sort of
The boss battles were a bit of a pain but I wouldn't call them horrible.
Co-op was amazing as was managing Mother Base.
The only MGS game I have not played is Portable Ops but I hope to play it some day.
I recommend you play Peace Walker. You'll appreciate Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain more imo.

I was blown away when it was revealed you can customize your mother base because in Peace Walker, it's just a screen if we are to be honest. Coming from that adds to the wow factor for me.

I'll probably just do this. Thanks for the link!

It's a personal preference, but I'd play 4 first just to get the Solid Snake story finished up. That way, you're not having to try and remember story elements that you don't need to know yet, and then you can watch this and go straight into Ground Zeroes knowing what's going on.

I recently wanted to get into Metal Gear and played through all of these games back to back:
MGS1, MGS2, MGS3, PoOps, MGS4, and now stuck on Peace Walker

I'm "stuck" because I hate Peace Walker. It's the only game I dislike from the series so far. I don't want to play it but I need to play it for the story. Here's another stupid bullet sponge boss fight which requires you to spam the "Get More Ammo" item repeatedly because the thing takes so many goddamn rockets.

I liked the base management in Poops and PW so I'm still excited for MGS5 (waiting for Phantom Pain before playing Ground Zeroes).

Is Revengeance on your list to play? Cos that is one of my favourite Metal Gear games.

Also...Twin Snakes is the true way to begin your MGS experience.

Should've played 4 first. It came out first after all.

But Peace Walker was great fun. Put like 25 hours into it.

And yes, MGSV literally picks up right after Peace Walker. I was kinda shocked at how hardcore that is. PW is a handheld game, Kojima gave no fucks.
