MGS3: Underatted work of art (56k foxdie!)

Doc Holliday

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
I was watching a buddy play the last hour or two of MGS3 and boy I had forgotten how amazing this game is. My god, how the hell did konami pull some of this shit on the ps2. If you were to tell me this game was running on a 360 i would almost believe it. I can't imagine what konami is going to do with mgs4....but anything is possible.

Underrated? It was GAF's GOTY...

Anyways (unpopular opinion), MGS2 was leagues better. 3's story was dumbed down after people found 2 overly complex, and the gameplay was completely broken. Don't get me started on my annoyance of the cure/camo/menu system...

But, since this appears to be a graphics thread, then yes, MGS3 was very purdy.

What, do you enjoy hitting start every 10 secs, waiting 5 more for it to load, fucking around in a boring ass menu, then hitting start again? Then repeating 2 mins later?

Teh fun!

Core gameplay wise, I would agree with 2 being better - playing a mgs game without a fixed radar (in 3) was just un-fun. You had to constantly be switching to first person mode to see where enemies were = not fun.

However, the story and boss battles in 3 were FAR better than in 2. The end.

Beautiful looking game. Too bad it has an archaic camera so you can't truly appreciate the visuals. I guess that will finally be fixed in subsistence and the game will finally deserve the high ratings it got.

Who sucks so bad that they're healing themselves every 2 seconds? And if you mean camo, you only have to switch when you get to an entirely new environment.

Everything about MGS3 stomped MGS2 into the ground. The CQC, the story, the characters, the boss fights, interactive cutscenes, the ending...

I was being sarcastic, obviously you missed it. Even still, that menu system pulls the player out of the game way too much. Its like watching a DVD but pausing every few minutes to rest your player.

CQC? The whole 3 moves? :lol
The boss fights I wont argue about, because 2's werent very good.
Interactive cutscenes came off as gimmicky if you ask me.
The ending was awful, campy cheese. Go America!

The ending was pretty damning towards America.

Teh conundrum!

Either way, it was campy. Gregson William's "Debriefing" playing over Eva's VO attempted too hard to be dramatic that it lost any possible emothional resonance.

Yeah, I would've much preffered Sloop John B to be playing.

Did you even play the fucking game? :lol

Yes, MGS was formerly my favorite gaming series. I had MGS3 preordered, play through it immediately, the whole nine yards.

The whole arguement regarding Cure and Camo I think comes up based on a person's playstyle. MGS3 is much slower paced than MGS2, if you played the game the same way as you did in MGS2 then you probably had to annoyingly go through Cure a lot. Slow it down a bit and it became less of a headache.

Since Ive been put in a position to defend myself (on the intranet :lol ), heres what you should know:

-Im not a "hater" or "fanboy" or some other series, Im too old for that, not to mention its fucking retarded
-MGS1 and 2 are in my top 5 all time
-I just happened to think HK totally dropped the ball on MGS3.

My opinion differs from yours. Get over it.

And the troll stands alone...

Some comments, however...
1. If you were in the Cure menu that much... frankly, you suck at this game. You are on a covert opt mission, not a rampage through the jungle. During boss battles, it got a little tiresome, but even then it takes like 3-5 seconds to do.

2. Agreed. CQC was underdeveloped, but it was a start. Way better than the Punch-Punch-Kick or flip combo in the other games.

3. Let's not argue bosses.

4. Not a gimmick when you aren't forced to do it. It's optional.

5. Now I don't think you even played the game. Campy? Cheesey? Could you be anymore off-base? If anything, it was anti-American. I suggest you read a plot guide since you couldn't even understand the story.

Normally, you are right. I'd respect your opinion if you weren't desperately trying to pass it on as fact. You said your two cents in your first post. Maybe, you should get over it and move on.

Jesus, would you like to "quiz" me to see that I did, in fact, beat the game (thrice)?

I don't doubt you beat the game(thrice).

Just explain to us, if you will, how anyone can confuse the ending as patriotic?

I was never "under it", so to speak. I will kindly leave the thread. But that wont happen until I stop getting quoted/have people trying to bring the e-me down.

I didnt confuse the ending as patriotic, nor did I say it was patriotic. Reading is key. I said it was "campy" and "Go America!".

Campy is self explanatory.
"Go America" as in being sarcastic. "Go America" as in way to use your soldiers as tools, and discard them like used condoms. "Go America" as in way to make a hero take the fall and be buried as a traitor.

Since apparently I must suck on the MGS3 teet, I will say something positive: the Shagohod chase was the best slice of gaming I played in 2004.

The camera was awful awful awful. The camo switching was clumsy.

I might have enjoyed MGS2 more than 3.

I look forward to bullshit ":lol" posts and talk about how I couldn't have possibly played the game.

Go GAF.

Nice not to be the only one.

Oh, and to further demonstrate how much I hate MGS, I am buying a PS3 solely to play MGS4. Oh, yes, I sure do hate it.

There's nothing wrong with our reading comprehension skills, Solo. You just can't write.

And maybe use the word "sarcastic" less. It's not a valid blanket defense when multiple people are scratching their fucking heads in your wake.

Oh, well then I had better change majors to English then professor, because we all know that's where the money is...

Anyways, glad that is "settled".

How many times do we have to go over this? Click in the left stick, and you have sonar. There is a radar in the game for those who read their manual. The only difference is it can not be used with impunity as it makes noise.

This is quite simply not a valid complaint.

You have a motion detector, the sonar, and the AP sensor which vibrates whenever an enemy is around. You also have the camo system which renders yourself almost invisible if used correctly, if you're having trouble sneaking around thats your own damn fault.

Thank God someone understands. You can play this EXACTLY the same as the others with the sonar, but so many people bitch about there not being a radar I wonder if they even played the game.

I jsut beat it a week or two ago and thought it was a great game. I bought it a day or two after it came out, played it for a coupel hours and didnt play it anymore until recently. My inital impressions of it... I dunno.. I couldnt get the hang of some of the stuff and just ended up screwing up more often than not. When I came back to it though, more than a year later, I really started to appreciate what they had done witht he game when I had some time to put into it.

CQC was a lot of fun when I got the hang of it. I would use it conjunction with the knife to get an inital stab then..whatever.. alot of times id run up, stab, then do that bad ass throw that knocks them out cold. I loved it. Once I got really good at CQC I found myself using it as much as possible.

I thought the ending and all was too long. Kind of fell asleep. I felt the game kinda dragged on but it was also my first time thru so who knows.

Camera didnt bug me at all. I thought the radar sucked in that game unless I was just using the wrong thing.. Never tried the left thumb stick push in thing.. Either way, wasnt a problem.. I think the game is more fun w/o radar even tho it took longer to beat.

The End was a bad ass boss fight. I read all these ways to beat him after the fact but I jsut kept on looking around for the glare form his sniper rifle scope. haha. I guess that is the "hard way" to do it but it sure was fun.

but yeah, great game. I love metal gear series a lot and cant wait for 4.

I'm not fan of the MGS series, but they sure can get an amazing amount of performance out of the ps2. I wish all developers could have squeezed out that kinda graphics out of the ps2 this gen. I don't know how they do it, they much be witches. Burn them!
