MGS4 80GB Order Details + GS/EB Trade Deal

Hi guys,

today I got some information for you regarding the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle.
As far as allocations go, most retail outlets will be getting around 15,000 units in the first shipment. Replenishments will be done according to a store's relationship with Sony, IE, does that store sell a lot of Sony products, games there. So it's not a 1 shipment only deal. Stores will be restocked with the 80GB PS3. I suspect stores like Best Buy will obviously get more stock.

As far as I am aware, the bundle will go on sale at midnight for the stores doing midnight launches.

Also, GameStop/EB are running a really decent deal right now for those looking to upgrade.
Trade in a PS2 with any extra controller and a memory card and get $80 toward the purchase of a PS3. I don't know how long this is running for, but it will at least go through June 8th.

If you want one of these PS3s on day 1, I suggest getting to the store early on the day it comes out.

GameStop will not be taking preorders on the bundle, period.

Thanks for the info. Will Amazon be allowing sales for the bundle on the day of release as well?

Of course. I don't know how many they're getting though. Probably the same as everyone else.

So the $80 trade-in goes through June 8th, but the MGS4 bundle is released on June 12th... and with no preorders being taken on the bundle, I'm guessing that this promo can't apply to the bundle?

Not that I'm going to be getting the bundle, since I already have a PS3... just wonderin' for clarity's sake.

The offer might be extended. We did one like this last year and it went for a while.

Does anyone have an idea of how long this bundle's gonna go on for? Logically Sony would be running it until December but Sony's been anything but logical with many of their decisions this gen so I'm sort of afraid =/ I want to get this but dunno if I'll pick it up until about August.

The trade-in sounds tempting though how am I to get the credit for a next-gen package when the promo ends 4 days prior to it's release?

what do you mean by new standard?
He means if it's considered the new 80 GB unit. Like how Motorstorm was bundled with all 80 GB units for a few months and how Spiderman 3 BluRay was bundled with all 40 GB units for that same time period.

It might be extended... hopefully.

I think Gamestop promos usually run till the product is released, at least that was my experience with GTAIV. The flier where you got an extra ten percent for trading towards GTA said it ended a day or two before it actually released, but they did it for people for about a week after. I asked the clerk and he told me that the end date for that promo code actually lasted/worked in their computers the entire week GTA released even though it said it ended a day or two before.

One other thing, will this bundle become the new standard for Sony? Like the Motorstorm one.

The way it's been, I imagine this bundle will last for at least 4+ months. I don't think it will stick around since so far, Sony is really adamant on keeping the 40GB because of the low price.

In other words, it will last about as long as the 80GB MotorStorm bundle or the 40GB Spidey 3 bundle. But that's just what I believe. Sony has not confirmed as to how long it's going to be around, but again, looking at past history, it will last a few months.

This isn't going to be a short run. I fully expect a long cycle for the MGS4 80gb bundle, just like the Motorstorm bundle. It should go through the holidays, making it a very attractive system during the high sales period. After that, I would expect a different bundle to keep things fresh with the high end sku.

Numerous interviews from Dille, Steinberg, etc. have stressed that they fully value PS2 backwards compatibility and that it will be available for consumers with the higher end unit. The delay we saw between the Motorstorm and MGS4 bundle was a fluke IMO (misguided judgment on demand for the 80gb, planning, re-manufacturing for these new 80gb systems, marketing, etc.).

That trade-in deal is nice. Wish I wouldn't have gotten this PSP now, could've had the cash for it. Now I have no choice but to purchase the bundle from Best Buy.

it's $80 towards a spankin' new PS3, not $80 outright, I think.

Yeah, while OP doesn't ever state it's towards an MGS4 PS3 he should specifically state it's for a non-MGS4 PS3. I'm sure some people are sitting here wondering how the hell they can trade in their PS2 to Gamestop (who isn't taking pre-orders) for $80 towards the MGS4 PS3 on a deal that runs out 4 days before the release of it.

Anyway, I told my friend about this, he's been waiting for the MGS4 bundle. The original idea was to order this from Amazon and get free 2-day shipping and no tax, but since Amazon will soon charge tax in NY, it doesn't seem as tempting. He seems to like this GS/EB deal better.

Thanks for mentioning the deal.

I think you get $80 credit that you can use towards the purchase of the bundle later on. I'm assuming that's what she means to say.

Does it have to be on the same day to get the $80?

Because the deal will probably be extended. The company as a whole is trying to move more sales, and this deal helps.

Maybe they're trying to sell their current stock of PS3's before the bundle that everyone wants comes out.

I better be able to get an mgs4 ps3 bundle on launch day, is all im saying. Someone will die if that doesnt happen. Sony would be stupid to not have a full stock on this, since the game is actually a system seller. Actually, Sony is inherently stupid by nature so im kinda afraid. :(

Better be at your local store before opening then.

Do we have any information that would lead us to believe that the 80 gig ps3s in this bundle use the newer 65 nm CPU like the 40 gigs have? If these are just left over 80 gigs that were stockpiled from months ago that makes this a little less attractive.

there are people in America that work and still have full time jobs. A rarity these days.

Unless this launches on a weekend? Nah....

Has anyone actually seen an 80GB ps3 in stores lately? it has been months since I have seen one.

/waiting for the rumble packaged 80GB model

True. You can order online from circuitcity.com if you're concerned. Apparently TRU is doing preorders now too.

You think Sony has been stockpiling 80GB units for months?

Why?

any way to order online and have it available at the store for pickup? I hate shipping products like that through the mail.

I never said they neccesarily were stockpiling them, but when this bundle was first announced everyone pretty much assumed they were the same ps3 modes from the motorstorm bundle. Not that much of a stretch really. I hope the models in this new bundle use the new manufacturing process but im not gonna just assume they do. :/

I can't wait for the bundle, although I will just sell my copy of MGS4 the moment I get it home.

Any problems with swapping out the HDD for a bigger model?

The trade-in sounds very tempting but the trading in process is very upsetting at my local GameStop. I feel like monkeys work faster then some of the staff there.

I want to believe. I really do...

Sony (and Amazon) better not let me down.

canada, too??
Canadian deals are NEVER EVER EVER the same as American ones.
Ever.

The only deal on right now for a PS3 is trade in 8 games worth $8 or more in credit and get $200 off a 40 GB PS3. Nothing for MGS4.

I'm holding out to the fall to see if another bundle pops up like the rumored 120gb option... If that doesn't show up, the 80GB MGS4 bundle still better be out or I'll wait until the next good bundle.

buy the 80 GB bundle, swap out the HDD for a larger capacity one, then sell the old one on ebay.

for the price of a game you can double the capacity of your PS3.
