MIce in the basement ceiling...any non lethal methods to get rid of them?

Its going on for a couple days now and its getting worse. I hear it/them running around like crazy above me right now. I am not entirely sure how many there are, just now it sounds like there is a family, but other times its sounds like just one of them.

Its a typical basement ceiling with those foam like tiles above (and some how they haven't fell through yet). Its driving me crazy, I am trying to work on a project and I hear them either chewing the wood or running around.

But the thing is, I don't want to kill them. I would rather not have to deal with the odor, and I would rather give it/them a chance to live. Any tips HouseGAF?

Collaborate with your neighbours to reach an agreement on open border policies then strain their food source, they're sure to move out in search of a better life.

We have a similar setup, and there is an access point into the basement ceiling in our utility room. I place one of those square metal traps up there with some peanut butter inside. They can enter but can't exit, then just take them outside and open the door.

That's probably where they were before. They will come back for the food or warmth or whatever attracted them to your house in the first place

Well OP can't kill every mouse in the forest now can he (or she)? I personally would have professionals handle something like this but I think its good that the OP is aware enough to look for a non-violent alternative.

Set a TON of traps. There is never just one, always a couple. Last time I had mice, they had baby's and we ended up catching 20 on the ceiling tile. Get an exterminator if you have to.

The food and shelter your house provides probably increased the population too much for ecosystem to sustain. Destroy what you've created.

You want to find a way to "exclude" the mice from coming in. I had a guy come by my house today to give an estimate for getting rid of squirrels in my attic. The biggest part of it was sealing all their entry points. No point in going through the effort to remove them if they are just gonna come back.

Sorry, if you want to get rid of them you're going to have to kill them.

Get a rat zapper. Instant death via high voltage shock. No mess. When the light is red, dispose of the dead mouse and replace bait (cheese cracker, peanut, etc.).

After eliminating most of the mice, find and seal off their entry point(s) to your home.

We used the Tom Cat non-kill trap (the black ones.) Use peanut butter. The mice walk in the front past a teeter-totter point and the door slams shut. The grey ones where the door is the only thing that moves don't work as well. We used to always joke that the neighborhood cats loved these new peanut butter mice, but you should make sure you take them far enough away then try to seal the places where they live/get in.

Why get rid of them? Raise them in the art of ninjitsu.

Hate to bump this, but...

I thought the mouse problem was taken care of. My dad laid a couple traps in the ceiling, two were killed. But there is still one running around, for the past week and a half I hear it running around in the ceiling. It would just not go for the delicious peanut butter. Just now, I saw the fucker on my damn desk and then running in the floor, just minding its own damn business. I tried to grab a box to trap it and throw it outside, but I lost it.

I don't know what to do now GAF, its still somewhere in my basement in either the main room or the 3 adjacent rooms. I feel so violated knowing it has access to my basement like this and can shit on everything. Clearly this one doesn't like peanut butter.

if nobody mentioned it yet, there's certain poisons that'll deteriorate them from the inside, no smell. also there are plug-ins that emit subsonic frequencies that'll chase them off, though i dunno how useful that would be for a basement infestation

My backyard is next to some vast woods that go on for miles, so I would probably release them there.

Why yes I do! I play the drums, my brother does as well...but the noise doesn't seem to bother them lol

they didn't get lost and somehow trapped in your house. they moved there, from the forest because you do not eat mice.
if you give them the option, they will just wait until you are gone, and enter through the crack in the foundation.

Place some sticky traps, dig a few little holes, burry the ones that get trapped. Have a proper little funeral.
