Michael Fassbender has never played Assassin's Creed

No the script writers and director need to know what the game is about, at the end of the day Fassbender is a monkey (all be it a talented and well paid one) that reads the lines put in front of him.

Isn't he a producer on this, though? He's definitely more involved than he is on, say, X-Men.

Anyway, you wanna talk about monkeys, that'll be your writers and directors. Those guys should definitely have played the game, but sadly I doubt they'll be much good either way. I think the only thing I'd really want from this film is a decent cinematographer- if they're going to bother making an AC film they better make it pretty.

Hopefully this movie damages the franchise like what happened with Prince of Persia. Except this time it will be for the best.

He doesn't need to know what ass creed is when they are paying him $15-20 million for the role. Will this movie be better or worse then Hitman?

The best outcome we can hope for in terms of script and direction is for the people involved to have read an elevator pitch for the Assassin's Creed franchise but not been exposed to the convoluted, boring ass shit that it turned out to be. A fresh interpretation based on the basic premise of the series is the only way I could seriously imagine this turning out well. Fassbender certainly doesn't need to have played the series to turn in a good performance, and in fact him trying to immitate the lifeless, dull shit that we get from Desmond / Connor etc would be an utter disaster. The only major character I recall not being terrible is Ezio, mainly because he's just having fun being a Renaissance James Bond getting his dick wet and going on adventures with Q.

"Video game player" is fucking fantastic.

I'm sure they're not basing it on any of the games any way. Just the idea of doing historical pieces with a sci-fi twist.

I'm also sure that this whole movie has 1/10 chance of ever actually being made, just like Halo, Mass Effect, Gears of War, etc...

So why do they let him touch a movie when has no knowledge what its about.

Why name it Assasins Creed then?

Are you sitting down.... shock some people don't play computer games, yes even as kids!

I don't watch TV. I don't have some weird alien name for televisions.

Same with a tablet, a smartphone or any modern device, really. Not owning an item or using one isn't really an excuse.

Why name it Assasins Creed then?

Because it's a known name and an idea you can do almost anything with.

Besides, each game also has a different main character (with part Four even changing the other main character). Why would you want to see the story you already know slapped onto the big screen?

Has he no Shame?

Huh? He's an actor, and he'll read the script. Does every single artist involved in production need to play the series?

Besides, it's creatively interesting and broadens the scope of a project to interpret its concept with fresh eyes.

Don't see why that would be a problem.

There have been plenty of movies where actors haven't read the books/played the game/know the source. Sure, not all of them were good... but yeah.

Did The Rock play Doom? Nope.

Did Angelina Jolie play Tom Raider? Nope.

Did Pierce Brosnan play Goldeneye? Nope.

Did Sean Bean play Silent Hill? Nope.

Why would an actor playing in The Lord of the Rings need to read the books?

Basically, yeah. The core premise of the AC is sound, especially the original one. AC2's is perfectly fine as well, it's not until Brotherhood that the entire plot completely derailed into an enormous clusterfuck.

If they can somehow distill the basic premise then there's a chance this movie ends up being cool.

Why would an actor playing in The Lord of the Rings need to read the books?

To get a broader understanding of the world and as a method to gather the motivations behind their characters actions as written by J.R. Tolken. But mostly because (I've heard) the books are an enjoyable read. You wouldn't need to read LOTR to gather motivation or to improve character development. Every actor's process is different.

But, to try to address the point you're making, are the plot, his character's intentions, or anything from the game necessary to create his character? He's not going to walk like a video game character. He isn't going to sound like the voice over actor. I assume they won't even lift lines of dialogue from the series, but, even if they do, does it matter?

To emerse themself in the world. To have background knowledge.

It might help some, but it certainly wouldn't be necessary.

Well...

Viggo Mortensen wasn’t even sure he could handle the part, being that he never read the books or met Jackson, but ultimately accepted after getting a needed push from his son Henry.

Link.

Ian McKellen said:
I hadn't read the book when I was asked to do it. I just took the job on the basis of the script.

I guess Magneto is just a lazy fuck who doesn't put in the effort to even read the source material.

lies. i bet he plays the shit out of video game players, but he's just afraid to admit it cause he doesn't wanna come off as dorky.
