Sure, he is inferior to John Williams. Everyone is inferior to John Williams.

But compared to the competition, Giacchino is amazing. Not saying guys like James Newton Howard or Alan Silvestri are bad, but Giacchino really does bring out the same musical quality and themes to a score that not everyone can do.

there are multiple film composers better than him right now (hans zimmer, alexander desplat, howard shore etc.)

well in hans zimmer's case I'm talking pre Last Samurai. He won my sword with Thin Red Line soundtrack.

Never said he is not. Regarding competition he is awesome and probably stomps any other composer on tv right now. But he is no john Williams. I hope this clarifies my comment :D

And yeah, I think Lost will become John Williams' Star Wars.

He may do better things later in his life, but people will still remember him most as the 'guy who did the music for Lost.

Not that big a problem though, like the score for Star Wars, the Lost score is something you want to show off.

Williams has multiple memorable scores though.

His Star Wars is also his Indiana Jones and to a lesser extent his Jaws. I doubt general public would recognize music from Lost if it played anywhere. I think he has a very memorable score in him, it will come soon.

I'm not saying he makes bad scores, his stuff for Pixar has been amazing. But yeah I want to see him tackle a drama.

John Williams is not that good.

Also Giachinno's work on LOST is "okay".
That's more due to the format however.

Nice simple piano pieces.

I think what Michael Giacchino did on Lost is something no other composer could do, his score is mindblowing, don't really know what else to say.

From Credit Where Credit Is Due (season 1) Crocodile Locke (season 1) to Keamy Away From Him (season 4) and my personal favorite Moving on (season 6) which combines several themes.

Breathtaking is the only word I can think of.

His other scores are amazing too but I think the Lost series is my favorite.

Thank you Michael Giacchino.

Before I clicked on this thread, the only thing I could think was, "if OP doesn't mention 'Credit Where Credit Is Due', then he is an idiot." Absolutely love that song. But how could you forget...

Hollywood and Vines. Seriously. This song makes me want to get lost on an island and explore and kill shit.

Win One for the Reaper - So haunting and beautiful. Guaranteed to make you sad. I almost shed a man-tear listening to it just now.

Departing Sun - Slow, building, wonderful.

People hating on the LOST music seriously need to shut their mouths and listen to some of the music. There is six seasons worth, and there is plenty of great material that was not even used in the show. If you think that the music I just linked to is shit, you're dead to me.

Dude knocks it out of the park when he doesn't have too much on his plate at a time. Season 4 of Lost was great and Speed Racer was incredible, but then he does four films and Lost in 2009 and everything outside of their main themes is fairly ho-hum. Hoping he makes a special effort for MI4, being another Bird collaboration.

He was great with Medal of Honor, great with Lost, knocked it out of the ballpark with Up, and provided an excellent nostalgia piece for Star Trek.

He might not be quite up to Williams (who is?) but he's easily one of the most creative and versatile composers when it comes to using a full orchestra these days, which seems to be waning. Most big Hollywood scores get layered with droning synths and bombastic, interchangeable eletronic percussion in lieu of actual themes and instrumentation. Don't get me wrong, I like scores like Inception and Tron: Legacy and they work well, but it's beginning to feel like the BRRRRRRMMMM school of sound design is taking over. I mean, just listen to the Ratatouille cooking scene or wall climbing scene. Gorgeous stuff there.

It's also interesting that he's the only video game composer I can think of who successfully made the jump to TV and film and is now on the A-list of Hollywood composers.

Shame that a lot of his work seems to be hard to get a hold of, at least physically. I've got Ratatouille, Lost: The Last Episodes and Star Trek 2009 - they're all fantastic.

Does a retail CD version of UP even exist?

Lost had terrible music. Star Trek theme is his best work to date.

Yup.
